DOH reports runaway Covid-19 cases for 2nd straight day

Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:06 AM PDT

(UPDATED) The Philippines again broke its own record when the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Friday, March 26, 2021, nearly 10,000 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), a new all-time high in a single day.

With 9,838 new infections, the cumulative caseload surged past 700,000 while the number of active cases approached the 110,000 mark.

The daily positivity rate also climbed higher to 17.3 percent as of noon of March 25, the DOH case bulletin at 4 p.m. Friday showed. A total of 32,069 samples were tested for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

The DOH has been reporting runaway Covid-19 cases since March 19, when the daily tally first surpassed the 2020 record.

In the last 14 days from March 13 to 26, the total number of new cases based on the DOH case bulletins reached 91,439, surpassing the 90,875 total cases reported in September 2020.

From March 1 to 26, DOH reported a total of 126,775 new infections, less than one percent shy of the 127,465 cases reported in the peak month of August 2020. By Saturday, March 27, the new cases reported in March are expected to surpass those in August.

The 9,838 new cases on Friday were higher than the 8,773 on Thursday, March 25 and the 8,019 on March 22.

As of 4 p.m. Friday, the cumulative caseload in the Philippines has increased to 702,856, including 109,018 active cases in hospitals and isolation facilities.

The DOH also reported on Friday 54 additional mortalities, which raised the death toll to 13,149. The case fatality rate declined further to 1.87 percent, given the runaway number of new infections.

There were 663 new recoveries, bringing the total to 580,689.

Nearly three of four, or 74 percent of, intensive care unit (ICU) beds and half, or 51 percent, of ventilators for Covid-19 patients in Metro Manila were in use as of March 24.

There were 39 health facilities with critical Covid-19 utilization rates of over 85 percent, 23 at high risk and 14 at moderate risk in Metro Manila. Some 76 facilities were still in the safe zone, the DOH tracker showed.

The highest 14-day running total of new cases as of March 25 were in Quezon City (8,536), Manila (6,524), Cavite (4,258), Bulacan (3,958) and Rizal (3,378).

Among the regions, Metro Manila or National Capital Region had the highest 14-day running total of 41,879, followed by Calabarzon with 11,821, Central Luzon with 6,612, Central Visayas with 4,516 and Cagayan Valley with 2,226. (Marites Villamor-Ilano / HDT / SunStar Philippines)

DILG goes after officials who allow vaccine line jumping

Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:05 AM PDT

NON-MEDICAL workers who cut in line for the Covid-19 vaccine face no liability but the local government officials who allowed it will be held accountable, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III said.

Densing was referring to celebrity Mark Anthony Fernandez, whose inoculation was approved by Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez.

"Yung mga sumingit kagaya ni Mark Anthony Fernandez, wala sa priority list pero nakasingit, as of this time, wala ho kaming nakikitang potential liability," Densing said in a virtual press briefing on Thursday, March 25, 2021.

President Rodrigo Duterte, who learned of Fernandez's vaccination, ordered the Department of Health (DOH) to investigate incidents of jumping the queue.

Densing said Olivarez, and seven more mayors and one councilor will also be asked to explain their failure to follow the prioritization framework for the Covid-19 vaccination program.

The DILG earlier issued show cause orders against Mayor Alfred Romualdez of Tacloban City, Leyte; Mayor Dibu Tuan of T'boli, South Cotabato; Mayor Sulpicio Villalobos of Sto. Nino, South Cotabato; Mayor Noel Rosal of Legazpi City, Albay; and Mayor Abraham Ibba of Bataraza, Palawan. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo / SunStar Philippines)

7,500 AstraZeneca doses recalled from Bicol still usable

Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:02 AM PDT

THE Department of Health (DOH) has recalled 7,500 doses of unused AstraZeneca vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) from its regional office in Bicol.

Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef said the vaccines are still usable.

Based on the preliminary report of the WHO and Unicef, one of the boxes containing the 7,500 doses received by the DOH Center for Health Development (CHD) Bicol showed a temperature of more than 400 degrees Celsius (°C).

However, upon detailed review of the vaccines, WHO and Unicef found that only the thermometer was faulty.

All other equipment and devices used to store and transport the said vaccines were all functional, thus, ensuring that all vaccine doses remain usable.

The DOH and the National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF) said they will double down on ensuring and maintaining the functionality of all devices and equipment used in Covid-19 vaccine logistics and storage management. (SunStar Philippines from PR)

Advincula appointed as Manila archbishop

Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:01 PM PDT

NEWLY appointed Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula on Friday, March 26, 2021, said he was overwhelmed by the new assignment given by Pope Francis.

In a radio interview, Advincula said he was intimidated to take on his new assignment at the oldest diocese in the country's capital as he comes from a diocese in a rural area.

"When I was told by the Nuncio that the Holy Father has appointed me as Archbishop of Manila, there was fear because this will be my first time to be assigned in a highly urbanized area like Manila, which is the capital of the country," said Advincula.

"I know it is a very challenging assignment and very overwhelming. But because this is the will of God and of the Holy Father, then, by obedience, I have to accept," he added.

He said he sees his appointment as a blessing from God, sent through the Pontiff.

"This blessing is not only mine but also for the faithful of the Archdiocese of Capiz, and, of course, for the entire Philippines," said Advincula.

"Having been chosen by God to be one of his ordained ministers is already a gift for me, a gift not to be kept for myself alone. But this is also a gift that should be used by me for the service of the people of God," he furthered.

The outgoing Capiz archbishop asked the faithful to pray for him.

"I ask the faithful to pray for me as I pray for everyone," said Advincula.

For his part, Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo welcomed the appointment of a new Manila archbishop.

"I am happy that we now have a shepherd," said Pabillo, who has been serving as apostolic administrator since February 2020.

On Thursday night, the Vatican announced the appointment of Advincula as the new archbishop of Manila.

The schedule for his installation as the 33rd archbishop of Manila was not announced. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
