BIFF leader, 5 followers surrender Posted: 18 Apr 2021 02:23 AM PDT A DIVISION commander of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) division and five of his followers surrendered to the military authorities in Maguindanao, military officials announced Sunday, April 17, 2021. Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said they surrendered Saturday morning to the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade headed by Colonel Pedro Balisi, Jr. in Kamasi village, Ampatuan, Maguindanao. Vinluan identified the BIFF division commander who surrendered as Abunawas Ibad Damiog alias Bayawak, 4th Division Commander/Deputy for Military of BIFF-Bungos Faction. Vinluan said Damiog's followers were identified as follows: Yasser Bago Abunawas; Anwar Alim Sangki; Olon Bago Abunawas; Mohammad Kanakan Ibad; and Dihan Abdul Ali. He said they yielded two M-16 Armalite rifles, one M-14 rifle, one M-16 "Baby" Armalite rifle, one caliber .30 M1 Garand rifle, and, one locally made caliber 50 Barret rifle with corresponding ammunition. He said Damiog disclosed during the debriefing that he wants to live a peaceful life with his family and he got tired of following the orders of top leaders without getting anything in return. "May the surrender of Damiog be an eye-opener to his followers," said Major General Juvymax Uy, commander of the Joint Task Force Central. "Rest assured that we will help them to go back to their normal lives by providing them with livelihood opportunities," Uy added. Village exec hurt in gun attack Posted: 18 Apr 2021 02:23 AM PDT A VILLAGE councilor was shot and wounded in a gun attack in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported. Police Captain Edwin Duco, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the incident happened around 9:10 a.m. Friday in Purok 2, Sioton village, Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay. Duco identified the victim as Ronald Olibo Momo, 49, a councilor of Sioton village, Mabuhay. Investigation showed the victim was walking towards Kasigpitan village of Mabuhay's nearby town of Talusan town when shot from the back by an unidentified gunman. Duco said the victim, who was hit in the right shoulder, was brought to Bateria Hospital for treatment while the suspect fled towards Punawan village, Mabuhay. He said the Mabuhay Municipal Police Station is conducting an in-depth probe to establish the motive, as well as unmask the suspect. The incident was the third case that happened this year in Mabuhay town wherein the victims are elected government officials. Vice Mayor Rstituto Calonge was shot and killed by a lone gunman on February 26 in front of the Mabuhay municipal hall. Two others -- Edgar Pampanga, municipal engineer, and Hadji Abduhari Gapor, a former town councilor -- were injured in the same incident. Municipal Councilor Alvarez Dammang, 45, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds when shot by one of two riding-in-tandem on a motorcycle on April 5 in Poblacion village, Mabuhay.
