Please welcome guest host Monique Woo, an intern on the photo editing staff. As Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month comes to an end, I reflect back on the inspiring connections I've made this month. I've had the opportunity to collaborate on stories created, produced and supported by other strong and talented AAPI women, learning more about myself and my identity as an Asian American women. "This could have been me" gives not only AAPI women a voice, but also gives their mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmas, etc., the recognition they deserve for their fight to earn a place in American society. These women also represent the pride and resilience we have as a community, and I am proud to be a part of this project. Listening to these stories reminds me a lot of my own mom, a Chinese immigrant, and how she would go to any lengths to protect me. I was born and raised in the United States, and the most important connections I could make to my Chinese culture were through family — and through food. My mom expressed her love by cooking my favorite foods growing up: dumplings, soy-sauce braised pork or noodle soup. Her food reminds me of good times, the same sentiments expressed by readers from around the world who responded to our invitation to tell us about the Asian dishes that bring them comfort. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed working on them. Thank you! The six Asian American women killed in the Atlanta shootings represented a diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Yet their deaths hit home for so many AAPI women.
