Zamboanga police nab 5 in anti-drug stings

POLICE operatives have arrested two persons and seized a sniper rifle and an explosive in separate anti-drug operations in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, an official said Wednesday, June 23.

Police Brigadier General Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula director, identified the arrested suspects as Sarira Ashmad, 26; Gilbert Alpa, 32; and Nasser Adjula, 39.

Ylagan said Ashmad was arrested by joint team of police, military and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) operatives in an anti-drug operation around 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, in Purok Gumamela, Tenan, Ipil, the capital town of Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Recovered from Ashmad were seven grams of shabu worth P47,600, a caliber .22 Sniper Rifle, and 13 pieces of P1,000 boodle money topped with one genuine P500 marked money.

Ylagan said Alpa was arrested in a buy-bust operation around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday. Seized from him some P20,400 worth of illegal drugs, P500 marked money and illegal drug paraphernalia in Purok Sampaguita, Don Andres village, Ipil.

He said Adjula was nabbed in an anti-drug operation around 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, in Taluksangay village, Zamboanga City.

Confiscated from Adjula were P4,500 worth of shabu, P200 marked money, a sling bag, and a rifle grenade.

Ylagan said appropriate charges will be filed against the arrested suspects. (SunStar Zamboanga)

53IB fetes 6 troopers for exemplary dedication to duty

THE Philippine Army's 53rd Infantry "Matapat" Battalion (IB) has awarded Military Merit Medal (MMM) and Military Commendation Medal (MCM) to six personnel for their exemplary dedication to duty.

Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera, 53IB commander, said that four of the six soldiers were awarded MMM for the capture of weapons and war materiel in a series of combat operations against the New People's army (NPA) rebels.

The MMM awardees were the following: Technical Sergeants Julius Dormitorio and Reylan Poculan and Staff Sergeants Alling Abduhaji and Ruel Calayca.

Sergeants Lemuel Moncada and Jay-ar Castillano were awarded MCM for their accomplishment due to the conduct of Youth Leadership Summit in the hinterland village of Pange, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte.

Herrera, who led the awarding of medal on Monday, thanked the awardees for their service to God, country, and people.

"The higher headquarters does not forget what you have done for the country, people, and the organization. It is only high time to honor your sacrifices," Herrera told the awardees. (SunStar Zamboanga)

JTF-Tawi-Tawi drive vs unlicensed guns gains headway

THE number of unlicensed guns the Joint Task Force (JTF)-Tawi-Tawi have recovered increased to 42, as the government's campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms continue to gain headway, a top military official said Wednesday, June 23.

Brigadier General Arturo Rojas, JTF-Tawi-Tawi commander, made the announcement after Jamsani Sahabi, 48, surrendered Monday, June 21, an M16-A1 rifle to the 512th Marine Company in Sitio Kubang, Mandulan village, Bongao, the province's capital.

Rojas said the troops, together with the village officials of Mandulan, were conducting peace forum when Sahabi turned over his rifle.

"The campaign against illegal firearms, weapons, and ammunition is one of our major programs to ensure the sustainable peace here in Tawi-Tawi," Rojas said.

"We attribute this accomplishment to the cooperation of the local government units and the peace-loving people of Tawi-Tawi who sincerely support us in all our endeavors," Rojas added.

Since January 2021, the JTF Tawi-Tawi recovered 42 loose firearms in the province, 27 of which are high-powered and 15 are low-powered.

"The armed forces continue to employ peaceful mechanisms to end hostilities in the communities by pacifying warring clans and encouraging the people to yield their loose firearms in adherence to the law," said Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command. Barmm allocates P4M for indigent patients

THE Ministry of Social Services and Development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MSSD-Barmm) has allocated P4 million to two hospitals to cater to the needs of indigent patients.

Lawyer Raissa Jajuri, MSSD minister, said the recipient hospitals were the Cotabato Sanitarium Hospital and Maguindanao Provincial Hospital that will receive P2 million each.

Jajurie said the fund allocation is intended for hospitalization expenses, medicines, medical treatment and procedures, including laboratory, CT-scan, dialysis, MRIs, anti-retroviral therapy, and chemotherapy of the identified and validated poor and eligible beneficiaries.

Jajurie said the social intervention is under the MSSD's Bangsamoro Critical Assistance for Indigents in Response to Emergency Situation (B-Cares).

Jajurie, Maguindanao Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) Chief Elizabeth Samama, and Cotabato Sanitarium Hospital Chief Ibrahim Pangato Jr. have signed memorandum of agreements (MOAs) for the implementation of the program in their respective hospitals.

Earlier this month, the MSSD also signed MOAs with Community Health Services Cooperative Hospital (Cohesco) in Midsayap, North Cotabato and Dr. R.A.M Albutra General Hospital in Kabacan, in the same province.

Each hospital will receive P1 million to cater the indigent patients in Special Geographic Area of Barmm. (SunStar Zamboanga)

‘Tabak’ fetes 2 female officers

The First Infantry "Tabak" Division, the premier command of the Philippine Army, has accorded recognition to two female officers during the Monday flag-raising ceremony in Camp Major Cesar Sang-an in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.

Accorded recognition were Captain Mary Jephte Mañebog, who will be designated as the new Public Affairs Office (PAO) chief, and Second Lieutenant Cheeven Kate Ocden, who was promoted to the next higher rank.

Major General Generoso Ponio, First Infantry Division commander, officially welcomed Mañebog as the newly designated POA chief and donned the new rank to Ocden.

Mañebog has replaced Captain Clint Antipala, who was recently assigned to the Philippine Army Civil-Military Operation Regiment.

Major Malvin Ligutan has served in acting capacity before Ponio has named Mañebog as the replacement of Antipala. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Sulu-based Marine troops donate blood

TROOPS of the 4th Marine Brigade (MBde) have donated 41 bags consisting of 18,450 centiliters (cc) in a bloodletting activity Monday, June 21, in the province of Sulu.

The bloodletting activity initiated by Colonel Hernani Songano, 4MBde commander, forms part of the brigade's 2nd Year Activation Day on Thursday, June 24, according to the Naval Forces Wester Mindanao (NFWM) Public Affairs Office.

More than 50 troops from the Marine Battalion Landing Teams-1, 7, and 8 were among the blood donors.

The bloodletting activity was held at the 4MBde headquarters in Tandu Bato village, Luuk, Sulu in collaboration with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC)-Sulu Chapter and Sulu Central Sanitarium.

Songano said the activity is also conducted as the unit celebrates and honors the valiant fathers among the Marines, as they bravely served the frontlines of Sulu while being away from their respective families.

Presciosa Chiong, PRC-Sulu Chapter administrator, said the packs of blood will be of great help for seriously ill citizens and military personnel in the province.

The bloodletting activity is anchored on the theme: "Dugo ko, Dugtong ng Buhay Mo." (SunStar Zamboanga)

Army brigade opens ‘Water Point 91’ refilling station

THE Army's 102nd Infantry Brigade has opened a water refilling station to serve its personnel and the community at the camp premises in Ipil, the capital of Zamboanga Sibugay.

Named Water Point 91 "Sambisig," the water refilling station was inaugurated Saturday, June 19.

The water refilling station is a project donated by Engineer Glen Letran Omaña and aims to provide clean and sustainable potable water for the personnel of the 102nd Infantry Brigade.

Omaña, a businessman from Zamboanga del Norte, said the project is part of his corporate social responsibility for the benefit of the soldiers and their dependents.

"We are very thankful to the kind-hearted stakeholders who recognizes the sacrifices of our men and assist us in providing basic needs and better living-conditions to improve their morale and welfare," said Brigadier General Leonel Nicolas, 102nd Infantry Brigade commander.

Nicolas said the Water Point 91 is currently providing water refilling services to organic personnel and other Army units residing within the brigade premises in Sanito village, Ipil. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Cops, BOC seize P5-M smuggled cigarettes

GOVERNMENT operatives have intercepted a shipment of more than P5 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested seven persons last weekend off Zamboanga City, the police reported.

Police Brigadier General Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula director, said the shipment was intercepted by joint personnel of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company and Bureau of Customs (BOC) around 3 a.m. Saturday southwest of Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City.

Ylagan said the team conducted a seaborne patrol after receiving information that a shipment of smuggled cigarettes is set to arrive early Saturday in the city coming from the province of Sulu.

Ylagan said the team chanced upon a "jungkong" type of watercraft marked MJ "Al-Hafidz" manned by a seven-man crew and loaded with some 145 master cases of undocumented cigarettes worth P5,075,000.

He identified the arrested seven-man crew of MJ Al-Hafidz as Nurullaji Alhari, the skipper; Annie Jammang, 27; Matli Hajirin, 36; Jamar Alhari, 27; Mahadel Munong, 31; Abdulhalik Mangkabong, 50; and Sakur Jarani, all residents of Omar, Sulu.

He said the confiscated contraband and crew members were properly turned over to BOC for proper disposition. (SunStar Zamboanga)
