SM Supermarket, Savemore in Bacolod get Safety Seal from DTI

Posted: 24 Jun 2021 09:02 AM PDT

AFFIRMING the establishment's strict compliance to government-mandated safety protocols against coronavirus disease (Covid-19), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Occidental has awarded the Safety Seal to SM Supermarket at SM City Bacolod and Savemore Bacolod-East Branch.

These were among the recent establishments in Western Visayas that received the certification from the agency.

The Safety Seal certificates are issued by the DTI and other government agencies to business establishments and organizations that adhere to minimum health standards set by the government.

DTI-Negros Occidental Consumer Protection Unit Head Romel Amihan awarded the seal to SM Supermarket store manager Ria Ablong Thursday, June 24, 2021.

The Savemore Bacolod-East Branch, on the other hand, received the seal last week.

Both establishments joined the list of 20 big companies that DTI-Western Visayas has awarded this month, with more establishments still lined up for inspection.

Aside from the DTI, the Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Tourism, Department of Health, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and local government units are also inspecting and assessing establishments under their jurisdiction before issuing safety seals.

Amihan, in a statement, said that while it is a voluntary certification scheme, having the Safety Seal is the establishments' public declaration to their customers and the community that health and safety are prioritized and all protocols are followed.

"It signals to the community that the place is safe to visit," he added.

As more business establishments apply for certification, it is the government's aim for the Safety Seal program to help increase public confidence in businesses in this time of the pandemic while also ensuring that minimum health protocols are strictly implemented.

These protocols included the wearing of face masks and face shields, regular disinfection and use of the required contact tracing system, among others.

Members of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases are also encouraging customers to patronize establishments that have the Safety Seal.

CHMSC gets P23M in 'smart campus' development project

Posted: 24 Jun 2021 09:02 AM PDT

NEGROS Occidental-based Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) has received a grant worth about P23 million for its "smart campus" development project from the Commission on Higher Education (Ched).

CHMSC Director for External Affairs Rhoderick Samonte, on the sidelines of the virtual turnover Thursday, June 24, 2021, said the school is pleased that amid the challenges brought by the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) global pandemic, it is one of the four state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the country to be given such grant.

"This is a real boost to our journey towards becoming a state university, as well as to our vision of becoming a leading green institution of higher learning in the global community by 2030," he added.

The Smart Campus Development Project will focus on a system-wide development of the information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure of all our four campuses.

These are its Alijis and Fortune Towne Campuses in Bacolod City, Binalbagan Campus in the said town, and the Main Campus in Talisay City.

Samonte said the main feature of the project is the total replacement of CHMSC's internet cables and connection from the current copper cables to full-blown fiber optic.

It also includes procurement of upgraded network appliances and equipment to enable the school to offer high-speed voice, video, and data service; decrease network traffic; reduce access latency; and widen the internet access and coverage across our four campuses for the benefit of all the students, faculty and staff.

Samonte said to sustain and maximize the lifespan of the network appliances, the infrastructure shall be housed in a secure and airconditioned environment with uninterrupted and regulated power supply in all of the campuses.

This will help, he said, reshape how their students study, how they learn, what they learn, and how they interact with their fellow learners and their teachers and mentors under a better normal.

Samonte said that through the Smart Campus Development Project, the school envisions to provide a more effective and efficient centralized framework that links systems and makes it easy to teach, learn and do things better.

"For this, we are extremely grateful to the Commission on Higher Education headed by Chair Prospero de Vera III and to Commissioner Aldrin Darilag who chairs our Board of Trustees," he added.
