1ID celebrates 34th Cafgu Active Auxiliary Day

MAJOR General Generoso Ponio, 1st Infantry Division (ID) commander, has thanked the Cafgu Active Auxiliaries (CAAs) for their support and contribution in attaining the 1ID's mission despite the risk of possible dangers during combat operations.

Ponio issued the statement as he led the led the celebration Wednesday, August 18, of the 34th Cafgu Active Auxiliary (CAA) Day that was highlighted with the awarding of Best CAA per Infantry Battalion, Mechanized Brigade, and Joint Task Force administratively and operationally controlled by the command.

"Marami ang naitulong ng Cafgu sa ating komunidad. Malaking tulong ang nagagawa ninyo. Kapag may mangyari man sa atin, 'yan ay kaloob ng Panginoon. Ang tanging magagawa natin ay alagaan at suportahan ang mga naiwang mahal sa buhay ng ating mga CAA," Ponio said.

The 1ID awarded the Best CAA and Best CAA Company from 101st, 102nd, 103rd Infantry Brigade, from 2nd Mechanized Brigade, and Task Force Zamboanga. Also, five CAAs from different battalions were awarded Best CAA Trackers.

The 1ID commended the hard work and sacrifice of every Cafgu in maintaining peace and order in the province.

Ponio also reminded the CAAs how serious their endeavors are and urged them to focus on performing their duties, especially during military operations.

The Cafgu units assist the regular units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) against insurgents.

They are tasked to prevent the communist terrorist group from gaining access to any organization and private agencies.

The 34th CAA Day was anchored on the theme "Cafgu: Bayani ng Komunidad, Kaakibat sa Kapayapaan at Kaunlaran."

The theme conveys the CAAs role in securing conflict-affected communities in support of the AFP and being one of the first responders during natural disasters. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Westmincom facilitates food packs distribution to fire victims

THE Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) facilitated the distribution of food packs to the fire victims currently housed at Southcom Elementary School in Calarian village, Zamboanga City.

The Westmincom said in a statement Friday, August 20, that personnel from the Office of the Assistant Chief of Unified Command Staff for Civil-Military Operations, U7; 4th Civil Relations Group; and Joint Task Force Zamboanga distributed a total of 500 food packs to the victims around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 19.

The food packs were donated by Professor Teng Catong, one of the professors of the government-run Western Mindanao State University (WMSU).

The Westmincom has also distributed a total of 100 cases of bottled water.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, at Camella Drive, Calarian village, Zamboanga City.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) reported that 116 families with 205 dependents were displaced by the fire that razed 95 houses and partially destroyed 17 others.

"The military is always here to help the people in all possible ways. This our own little way to the return the assistance extended by the citizens in all our endeavors," said Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander of Westmincom.

"We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our stakeholders for assisting us in the realization of this relief operation," Vinluan added. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Westmincom commander pays farewell visit to JTF-Tawi-Tawi

LIEUTENANT General Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), has commended the troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF)-Tawi-Tawi for their accomplishments in the anti-terrorism campaign.

Vinluan made the commendation during his talk to the troops when he paid a farewell visit Wednesday, August 18, to the JTF-Tawi-Tawi and 2nd Marine Brigade a week prior to his retirement from the military service.

The most notable accomplishments of the JTF-Tawi-Tawi was the rescue of Malaysian hostages following a clash that resulted in the death of Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf leader Majan Sahidjuan alias Apo Mike in March this year in Kalupag Island, Languyan, Tawi-Tawi.

"Let us sustain the momentum, remain steadfast in accomplishing our mission, and continue to establish a good relationship with our partners, stakeholders, and the communities so as to win their popular support to all our endeavors, for it is better to win peace without a single bloodshed," Vinluan told the troops.

On his arrival Wednesday, August 18, Vinluan was welcomed with Foyer Honors rendered by the Marine troops led Colonel Romeo Racadio, JTF Tawi-Tawi commander, at Toong Hall of the 2nd Marine Brigade headquarters, Sanga-Sanga village, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

Vinluan also paid an exit call to Tawi-Tawi Governor Yshmael Sali at the Provincial Capitol.

Vinluan expressed his gratitude to Sali for his unwavering support to the Westmincom's thrust.

Likewise, Sali thanked Vinluan for all the assistance extended by the command to the province of Tawi-Tawi particularly in ensuring the safety and security of the people.

Also present during the short meeting were the local chief executives of all the municipalities of Tawi-Tawi.

They also expressed their appreciation to Vinluan, who is set to retire next week. (SunStar Zamboanga)

DA, Owwa hold livelihood forum for Zambo Norte OFWs

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) distributed on Thursday, August 19, 2021, assorted vegetable seeds to returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the province of Zamboanga del Norte.

These vegetable seeds were distributed during the Regional Information Campaign for OFWs held at Poblacion village, Salug, Zamboanga del Norte and was attended by 50 returning OFWs from different municipalities of the province.

George Vallente, Zamboanga del Norte agricultural provincial coordinator, said that the Micro Agri-Kabuhayan para sa balikbayan program was organized through the partnership between DA's regional office and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa) to provide the OFWs livelihood and business.

"The DA is primarily intended for food production. There are various programs of the DA that can cater to the needs of the farmers, such as provision of planting materials, machinery, and other needed inputs," Vallente said.

He also encouraged the OFWs who are farmers to enroll in the Registry System for Basic Sector in Agriculture to avail of DA projects and programs.

Those who served as resource speakers during the activity were Owwa Regional Director Ron Lionel Bartolome, Victoriano Joseph from the DA Agricultural Credit Policy Council, and Bayani Valencia from the DA-Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division. (SunStar Zamboanga)

53IB holds NCO leadership forum

THE Philippine Army's 53rd Infantry "Matapat" Battalion (IB) is conducting a three-day Non-Commissioned Office (NCO) Leadership Forum to further enhance and develop the leadership skills of its NCOs.

The 53IB said in a statement that the three-day first batch leadership forum started on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Camp Major David Sabido, the home of the 53IB headquarters in Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur.

The 53IB said the forum is aimed to develop the NCOs' attributes and behavior.

The 53IB said the forum is to enable the 38-strong NCOs to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority in leading and guiding Matapat troopers toward achieving the commander's intent and mission accomplishment.

The NCOs will have lectures from Technical Sergeant Vicente Mayo, the Battalion Sergeant Major and different Staff Officers about leadership and the unit's best practices.

The 53IB said that the activity is part of the Battalion's drive to strategically communicate the Army's transformation to become world-class that is a source of national pride by 2028 in line with the Army Transformation Roadmap. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Zamboecozone chair inducted as RCC member

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has inducted Raul Regondola, Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority and Freeport chairperson and administrator, as a regular member of DOLE Regional Coordinating Committee on Thursday, August 19, 2021.

Lawyer Roy Buenafe, DOLE regional director, led the induction of Regondola during a special meeting of DOLE RCC at the agency's office in Santa Catalina village, this city.

Buenafe said the DOLE RCC aims to unify its attached agencies and serve as an avenue for convergence in pursuing respective mandates through opportunities for dialogue, complementation of programs and services, and problem-solving between member-agencies.

Buenafe said the Zamboecozone will join the RCC during its quarterly meetings alongside DOLE's family of agencies composed of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Professional Regulations Commission, National Labor Relations Commission, National Conciliation-Mediation Board, Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Occupational Safety and Health Center, and Employees Compensation Commission.

1,600 Maguindanao families receive food aid

SOME 1,600 indigent families from Maguindanao are set to receive food assistance from the Project Kapayapaan sa Pamayanan (Kapyanan) of the Office of the Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Barmm).

Engineer Abdulnasser Usman, Kapyanan deputy project manager, led the first wave of food packs distribution on Tuesday, August 17, in the municipalities of Sultan Kudarat and Parang, Maguindanao.

Usman said the food packs include two sacks of 25-kilogram rice, canned goods, green mung beans, salt, cooking oil, sugar, coffee, and a water container.

Usman said the recipient families were the same beneficiaries of the Kapyanan housing projects—complete with solar power and water element, funded through the 2019 budget appropriations of Ebrahim's office.

He said similar food distribution will be also held for beneficiaries in the municipalities of Sultan Mastura, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Upi, Datu Blah Sinsuat, and Mother Kabuntalan.

Project Manager Abdullah Cusain explained that the houses were the first component of the program, next is the food assistance, followed by livelihood support to the family beneficiaries.

"Itong 1,600 beneficiaries is equivalent to the number of houses in the first district of Maguindanao na target nating pabahay," Cusain said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
