| 'Rebel supporter' nabbed in Eastern Samar for illegal firearms, explosives Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:35 AM PDT POLICE and military personnel apprehended a 46-year-old alleged rebel supporter in Borongan City, Eastern Samar after a warrant was issued for his arrest for unlawful possession of firearms and explosives. The accused, Cesar Agosto Palce, was arrested around 5 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2021, in Barangay Songco, Borongan by virtue of a warrant dated July 13, 2021, police said in the report. Presiding judge Nathaniel Baldono, of Regional Trial Court-Branch 2 in Borongan, did not recommend bail to the accused for alleged violation of Presidential Decree 1866, as amended by Republic Act (RA) 9516 (Unlawful Manufacture, Sales, Acquisition, Disposition, Importation or Possession of an Explosive or Incendiary Device) and RA 8294. Meanwhile, a soldier was killed and two others were injured after suspected rebels waylaid them in Barangay Dolores, Las Navas, Northern Samar Thursday morning. The slain soldier was reportedly identified as Staff Sergeant Leopoldo Omanito Jr. while the wounded were Corporals Jason Bautista and RJ Solayao, all from 83rd Military Intelligence Company. Eastern Visayas, particularly Samar Island, has remained a hotbed of insurgency with the continued presence of the communist rebels. | Additional Covid-19 vaccines arrive in Eastern Visayas Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:34 AM PDT EASTERN Visayas received on Sunday, August 1, 2021, an additional 102,400 doses of Sinovac vaccines and 195 vials or 1,170 doses of Pfizer vaccines as government's inoculation efforts against coronavirus disease (Covid-19) continued in the region. "The government's intensified vaccination drive is continually in action as the vaccine inoculation for priority Groups A1-A3 is still ongoing, both for their first and second doses, respectively," the regional health department said. "The public is reminded to coordinate with their local government units for vaccine registration and get vaccinated, following the government's Prioritization Framework, in order to get maximum protection against the severe form of Covid-19," it added. All six provinces in the region, including the cities of Tacloban Ormoc, will be allocated with the Sinovac vaccines. The Pfizer vaccines will be allocated to the towns Dulag and Palo, Leyte for the pilot implementation of the Pfizer vaccination in Leyte province. As of Sunday, Eastern Visayas has received a total of 829,920 doses of Covid-19 vaccines. Some 352 sites were also conducting Covid-19 vaccination in Eastern Visayas. The regional health department said 99.88 percent of the available doses have been distributed, equating to 725,489 out of 726,350 doses received, as of July 29. A total of 508,551 doses have been administered. "329,659 or 75.88 percent of the 434,424 allocated first doses have already been administered. While 61.28 percent of the second doses have already been administered, equating to 178,892 administered doses," it said. The target population for A1 or the Frontline Health Workers have met the 100 percent coverage rate, 23.84 percent for A2 or Senior Citizens, 28.49 percent for A3 or Adults with Comorbidities, and 5.2 percent for A4 or the Economic Frontliners, the regional health department reported. As of Sunday, the region's total number of Covid-19 cases is at 36,210, with total recoveries at 34,363 (94.90 percent), total deaths at 421 (1.16 percent), and total active cases at 1,426 (3.94 percent). | Marticio Brothers rule Tacloban 600-kilometer Motor Endurance Challenge Posted: 01 Aug 2021 08:32 AM PDT BROTHERS Raffy and Raymart De Paz Marticio have dominated the Tacloban 600-kilometer Motor Endurance Challenge, proving themselves as still the "Champions of the Road" in Eastern Visayas. On Sunday, August 1, 2021, the siblings, who are both Marine Engineering degree holders from La Paz, Leyte, topped in Big Bike and Scooter categories, respectively. Raffy, 27, finished the challenge starting from Tacloban Astrodome by more or less five hours only. He was driving a Kawasaki Z400. Other top finishers in the Big Bike category were Den Campay, using Kawasaki Versys 1000 (top 2); Alfeo Villacorte, Kawasaki Versys 1000 (top 3); Neil Francis Peñaflor, Kawasaki Z1000 (top 4); and Mark Anthony Buyo, BMW GS1250 (top 5). The 600-kilometer Endurance Challenge followed the route Tacloban- Carigara - Palompon - Ormoc - Sogod - Baybay - Abuyog and going to Palo, with five checkpoints and five photo opportunities. In normal circumstances, the challenge can be completed in around 15 hours. Meanwhile, several riders from the Underbone and Scooter categories met minor accidents on their way to the finish line. The organizers have yet to disclose their identities and the nature of their accidents, Samar Weekly Express reported. Over 900 riders from across the region participated during the event.
