GREPA Medical and Diagnostic Center (GMDC), a division of Sun Life Grepa Financial Inc. (Sun Life Grepa), now offers safe, convenient telemedicine services for outpatient cases nationwide.

This aims to help decongest hospitals, maintain physical distance and reduce the spread of Covid-19 especially now with the threat of highly transmissible Delta variant.

The GMDC Telemedicine is an online consultation service that uses a video conferencing platform where clients can virtually ask doctors about their non-urgent health concerns while in the safety and comfort of their homes.

"We have seen how telemedicine is an extraordinary tool," says Sun Life Grepa President Richard S. Lim. "By extending our telemedicine services outside our employees, people who are experiencing medical ailments and illnesses during this time can receive appropriate and timely medical advice without necessarily going to hospitals, minimizing the risk of being exposed to Covid-19."

In using GMDC Telemedicine, clients can also enjoy using a convenient scheduling system to avoid long queues and waiting time.

GMDC doctors are available from Mondays to Fridays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The consultation fee ranges from P650 to P1,000, depending on the nature of the inquiry. The consultation fee can be paid through RCBC Bank Transfer. For clients who are health card (HMO) holders, they may contact their local HMO for a Letter of Authorization.

For corporate clients, the fee for the consultation service is charged to their account.

Santos Land is going up

Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:49 PM PDT

No other option but up - this is the key message of the second quarter virtual awarding of Santos Land Development Corporation (SLDC) to its sales and marketing force.

The homegrown developer pulled off a successful recognition and thanksgiving event anew as it continued to commit to give importance to its sales executives, managers, and directors being the essential partners in providing quality houses and spaces to its growing clients. The event was broadcasted live on Facebook with thousands of views last July 29.

In her opening speech, SLDC chairman of the board Nora Morada praised the force behind their sales team as they remain competitive and hard working to deliver beyond what is expected of them.

"We are proud that even with the chaos and fear brought about by the pandemic, the energetic and courageous sales and marketing team have given us an impressive results. You never cease to amaze me and your directors, each one of you deserves a pat in the back," she said.

Every quarter, SLDC has been staging a fun, and full of prizes and surprises event to show gratitude to all its sales partners for doing a great job.

Apart from giving plaques and recognition to the people who hit their quota and registered high sales, the virtual celebration was also filled with raffle prizes of load, cash, appliances. The event was also made more special as they were serenaded by Davao's trending band Korde and entertained by beatboxer and Asia's Got Talent's Neil Llanes.

In his virtual message, SLDC president Antonio Nicolas S. Domingo expressed joy for being able to gather the people who helped them realize the vision of the company. He said their outstanding performances give them reason to keep going despite the hard blow of the pandemic to the real estate industry.

"I don't know what you are doing right now in terms of how you sell our products but I assume it is really hard meeting your clients virtually and not face to face most of the time. But somehow we were able to adapt with this. That is how we live today and hope we will be able to survive and next year things will become better," he said.

Domingo admitted that they are slowing down in expanding their business operations but committed to deliver their promises to the market like the Ivory Residences Condominium in J.P. Laurel Avenue, Davao City.

"I'll see to it that our condo will be completed hopefully this year. We have gathered many contractors and everybody is working hard to finish it," he said.

He added that he is confident that agents will be proud to sell the units as it is made of quality and is a standout from the market because of its impressive features and amenities.

"On housing, we are trying to continue to improve the quality of our products in terms of design, structure, and quality materials. That is something that you can expect next year as we move forward. We hope we can be able to achieve more in the coming months and years together," Domingo said.

Meanwhile, SLDC marketing manager Estela Aguilos has shared exciting plans ahead of the company. One of the things Dabawenyos should watch out for from SLDC is its newest residential project - Laureana Grand Plains in Libby Road Puan, Davao City.

SLDC, she said, is targeting to formally launch it within the third quarter of this year and selling will commence in the last quarter of 2021.

"We will also roll out in the third quarter, an enhanced in-house financing wherein the interest rates are much lower and the terms are much longer," Aguilos said.

One of the most successful partners of SLDC during the second quarter is Filipino Homes founder Anthony Leuterio from Leuterio Realty and Brokerage. He logged around P33.3 million in sales from April to June.

"In Filipino Homes, we always believe in the values of Santos Land - commitment, resilience, excellence, and attitude of excellence. These are the reasons why we excel, we always think of your vision which is establishing a homegrown builder of innovative and sustainable homes. We are always here to continue our services to help our Filipino people who are looking for homes," he emphasized.

Santos Land is proof that pandemic or not, there is always something to be grateful for and that blessings will continue to pour if we invest our dedication and hard word towards one common goal.

The partnership also of SLDC with its sales force is a testament that going up is not possible if all people involved do their part and work closely together.

"We are very happy and grateful that hindi niyo iniwanan ang (you did not leave) SLDC. You guys are really worth celebrating!" Aguilos said. (ASP)

Festival mood at Legacy Leisure

Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:29 PM PDT

"One of the main considerations in planning an event is the space," said Candice Respicio of the Zegen Group, an Davao based events management company that holds an impressive list of clients from the private, corporate and political sectors.

"The wide outdoor area of Legacy Leisure can be an exciting venue for a private festival like the Kadayawan for its residents. The amenities can be used for other purposes other than its intended use," she added.

Impressive and unique is how to describe the amenity area of CrisRon Legacy Leisure Residences, the rising condominium project along Ma-a Road.

"It is unique because our design goes the opposite direction of the regulated community developments which allots 30% of the total area to open space. Legacy Leisure's open space will occupy 70% of the 2.4-hectare project," said Clark Yap of CrisRon Holiday Builders, Inc.

"To make the open space impressive, Legacy Leisure is going world-class on its amenity development. Across the wide open space will be an Olympic size swimming pool and spray park for kids; sports areas to include basketball and tennis courts, a putting green and jogging track; family areas like the picnic area with a barbecue pit, and a park. Fun and leisure is amplified and this is a step from your door," Yap added.

Community bonding will be more exciting on a special season like this. Activities won't be limited to a pocket-sized amenity area like the social hall or the perimeter of a small pool. Imagine visiting a world-class resort, this is what Legacy Leisure is aiming for. This though will be private, exclusive for its residents.

Zegen's concept for a Kadayawan Festival theme is incorporating the best of Davao in the venue for the weekend holiday. Zones can be created for people to mingle.

The basketball court can be turned into a fruit and fresh vegetable market from local growers; the tennis court can be the curated food zone selling special delicacies; and the park can be the "green bazaar" selling Davao's best flowers and plants.

"The wonderful thing about this novel idea is it is private and safe, plus the residents can take part in the commerce, if not, they can be the sellers themselves. For sure, ther will be residents who are good cooks and artists," said Candice.

The tribal beats of the 11 tribes of Mindanao can get everyone into the Kadayawan vibe. A guest artist can serenade the revelers with local tunes and residents can tae part in the entertainment. The picnic area and the barbecue pit, which will serve its intended purpose, will be the perfect entertainment area.

While social gatherings is a common activity in every condominium, Legacy Leisure Residences will be set apart with its capacity to host a festival level event.

MCM Launches Covid-19 Case Tracker for Davao region

Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:19 PM PDT

A YEAR after the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus, the Department of Health (DOH) stated on August 9, 2021, that the Philippines is once again categorized as "high risk" due to the increase of cases infected by the Delta variant.

Recently, Davao City has been placed under Alert Level 4 which means "the risk classification is moderate to critical and has a healthcare utilization higher than 70 percent, regardless of the presence of the more transmissible Delta variant" according to DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

With this, Malayan Colleges Mindanao, A Mapúa School, followed suit after its sister school, Malayan Colleges Laguna, A Mapúa School (MCL) in the launching of their Covid-19 Case Tracker which was initially developed last year for Laguna. This year, the team remodeled the tracker with data from the Davao region.

The tracker was developed by the skillful faculty, students, and alumni of the MCL College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS), spearheaded by CCIS Dean Kristian G. Kikuchi, Prof. Dennis A. Martillano, John Noel J. Corpuz, John Disonglo, Mark Anthony Hernandez (alumni), Donmarc Bryan Salcedo, Janrey Valenzuela, and Job Lipat (students).

"In partnership with our sister school Malayan Colleges Laguna, this COVID-19 [Case] Tracker was developed to keep the Davao City community informed to help mitigate the threat brought by the pandemic. Let us all do our part to protect the vulnerable members of our community. Keep safe!" said Dr. Dodjie Maestrecampo, President and CEO of the Malayan Colleges.

Malayan Colleges Mindanao hopes that this tracker helps in raising awareness and continuing to combat Covid-19. Through our collaborative efforts to combat COVID-19 in the Davao City community to create a healthier and safer environment, we may see ourselves celebrating the Kadayawan Festival, Araw ng Dabaw, barangay fiestas, noche buenas, and more, once again with our loved ones.

As we continue to follow the mandates implemented by the local government, MCM believes we are one step closer to the approval of conducting limited face-to-face classes, which MCM has duly prepared for by providing Flexible Learning Options.

The Covid-19 Case Tracker for Davao Region is now accessible on the MCM website and the tracker site.

Malayan Colleges Mindanao is still accepting late enrollees up until September 10, 2021 for Junior High School, Senior High School, and College. Enroll now! (PR)

Merlgen: Cabinetry that compliments every bathroom design

Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:07 PM PDT

IF someone says that the bathroom is the most important room in the house, would you agree? Give it a second though, it might get you nodding.

The bathroom is where one starts and ends the day, and an escape zone when seeking solitude, or a good hiding spot. Believe it or not, the shower is where inspiration can strike and the perfect area to decompress. How much time do you use this room daily?

In designing homes, the bathroom, does not get a s much attention, which shouldn't be the case. It is one of the most used rooms in any home. Did you know that house guests can judge you by how this room looks?

"The golden rules of bathroom design lists proper ventilation, ample natural light coupled with good mood lighting, and attention to details. When we say details it means all appointments must be cohesive, it should have a theme and space conscious. Then the rest will fall into place— the color, tile layout, fixtures and the right cabinetry," said Honeylet Lim, manager of Merlgen Euro Designs.

Cabinetry plays an important role in the success of bathroom design. Here are some Merlgen tips that can help you achieve a dreamy bathroom.

  • Maximize storage space. A good cabinet appointment can maximize a given space, no matter the size. It is essential to know what you need to store and come up with a well-planned storage solution. Spaces behind the wall mirror, below the lavatory and above fixtures can be utilized. Appoint which spaces will store your necessities. A clutter-free space will create a calm space.

  • Function over form: choose the right cabinet size. It should be proportional to the overall space. Know your essentials and and create a storage enough for these to be easily accessible. You bathroom needs to have the aura of spaciousness no matter how small. You don't want to be bumping into anything when moving around the bathroom

  • The right color will make or break your total look. Remember that you're working on a theme. A sleek grey tone will look great in a modern bathroom, or go bold with black and white contrast; dark wood finish will complement mid-century and vintage looks; a pale tone of wood finish will make a shabby chic goal successful;, and white gloss cabinets in a white bathroom will look heavenly!

How youths in cultural communities are using digital tools to preserve traditions, culture

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:03 PM PDT

THE Covid-19 pandemic not only posed a grave health threat to the public, it also affected everyone's way of living, human interaction, and culture.

But for the indigenous peoples (IP) in Davao City, the pandemic didn't stop them from keeping their culture alive.

Jessa Andian of the Bagobo Tagabawa said the pandemic should not be a hindrance to continue their traditions.

With the restrictions, resulting in everyone staying within their residences, Andian said there should still be continuity in the culture and tradition by educating the younger generation.

While the elders within the community, both in the city and hinterlands, had been imparting this, she said Millenials like her have the duties and responsibilities of imparting this to their fellow youths.

"Many of us millennials have been affected by modernization due to social media. That's why it is important to remind them that although we are embracing modernization, we should not forget our roots and identity," Andian said.

To encourage them to continuously embrace and be open with their identity as Bagobo Tagabawa, she spearheaded a virtual seminar with selected young IP participants wherein they were imparted with the traditional dances, how to play traditional musical instruments, introduce their tribe's native food, and create traditional attire.

"In our own little ways, we find a way that our youth will have extra activity amid the lockdown, by introducing to them our culture, and that they would be able to adapt to our culture," she said.

Nurainie Ampatuan of the Maguindanaon tribe also saw the potential of the digital age in preserving one's culture amid the pandemic.

In her tribe, Ampatuan they continue to maintain and preserve their culture through fashion and attire.

"Online sessions are a good platform to help in preserving culture and tradition from the community, especially now that almost everyone is at their homes," Ampatuan said.

She encouraged her fellow youth who had been immersed with their culture and tradition to initiate and impart this knowledge to the next generation.

She said her tribe continues to preserve its weaving culture. This is despite the scarce resources of the materials due to various factors, including logistical problems brought about by the Covid-19 restrictions.

Cultural communities near tourist spots are still able to showcase and maintain their culture by showcasing their delicacies.

Other tribes in some parts of Mindanao had also been showcasing their culture and authentic products online, of which Ampatuan hoped that other tribes in the city would also take advantage. Hence, it is to embrace modernity without sacrificing the authenticity of one's culture.

"In our current situation, it is important that we adapt despite the struggles and difficulties because we have the obligation to maintain one's culture amid the pandemic. It is in our hands how we are able to preserve it," Ampatuan said.

    Missing the Kadayawan Spirit

For two years in a row, the Kadayawan celebration remains virtual due to the current threat of Covid-19.

Andian and Ampatuan, both 2019 Hiyas sa Kadayawan winners, said they miss the grand celebration and activities of the annual festivity.

Andian, Hiyas sa Kalambuan, said it is something they look forward to every year considering that the festival recognizes the different cultural communities in the city and their role in society.

"Through the Kadayawan celebration, the 11 tribe IPs are being recognized and have been less discriminated against throughout the years," she said.

Aside from missing the Tribal house tour in Magsaysay Park, different exhibits, and other highlight events, IPs are also looking forward to showcasing their talents whether on streets or on center stage.

"It's hard to adjust with the current situation. But still, the spirit of Kadayawan, to each and everyone who knows its value, is within the hearts especially to the IPs," Andian said.

People from the far-flung areas, despite not being able to physically celebrate Kadayawan, are still able to celebrate, unite, mingle, and enjoy the festivity.

While the Kadayawan rites would have to be skipped for another year, she said the memories of its vibrant festivity would still inspire everyone.

"This shall pass, and we will look forward that we would be able to celebrate it once again, wherein we would no longer be wearing our masks and there will be no more social distancing," Andian said.

Meanwhile, Ampatuan, Hiyas sa Kadayawan, hopes the Kadayawan would encourage her fellow IPs to preserve their ethnic authenticity, especially on their textiles. "It's part of who we are," she said.

"The Kadayawan spirit that I had been carrying all throughout my Hiyas journey is that we must maintain and preserve our roots. Wherever we go, and whomever we would be able to interact with, they would be educated of our individual identities," Ampatuan said.

This is also to break cultural misappropriation. She added that there were stereotypes that there are indifferences between tribes, but she said the Kadayawan showcased that amid diversity, different IPs can get along.

"That's what makes us authentic as Filipinos. This would help us lift our culture," she said.

"We are celebrating the Kadayawan to showcase our rich culture, and at the same time, highlight our city's progress throughout the years," she added.

To recognize the different tribes, Ampatuan said, is something to be proud of as this distinguishes their potentials, which they hope would be recognized not only in the country but the entire world. (RGL)

    Kadayawan in the digital sphere

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:44 PM PDT

    IF there's a will, there's a way.

Not even the restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic can stop Dabawenyos from celebrating one of the biggest festivals in the city --- the Kadayawan festival.

A little trivia: Kadayawan was founded in 1986 to honor Davao City's 11 tribes and the natural wonders.

For the second year, the city would have to skip the colorful vibe and festivity of one of the most anticipated festivals on the streets. Hence, this year's Kadayawan would remain "digital."

This was successfully launched in 2020 when the city migrated the celebration of the 35th Kadayawan digitally.

Dubbed as "Digital Kadayawan", the online celebration last year was a trip down memory lane as it highlighted activities and competitions via digital platforms.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said last year that the city will have to skip major events to further curb the spread of the virus, which can be transmitted through gatherings.

For this year, City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) Head Generose Tecson said it will be the same scenario for this year. But this time, a precautionary measure due to the ongoing threat of the Covid-19 variants.

Admittedly, Tecson said the city was attempting to do a "hybrid" celebration --- a mixture of live and online celebration.

Nonetheless, she said this won't make it any less as people outside the city, particularly abroad, can also take part in the festivity.

This year's theme is "One Beat. One Culture. DabaONEnyo."

Despite the current situation, Tecson said the spirit of Kadayawan, which is to unite amid diversity, remains alive and intertwines with the day to day living of the residents in the city.

"Kadayawan is all about our thanksgiving for bountiful harvest. But beyond the bountiful harvest, especially at this time, is really our hope, health, and our life," Tecson said.

Kadayawan formally kicked off on Friday, August 20 and will end on Sunday, August 22.

Among the activities are Tunog Kadayawan, Tribu Kadayawan, Sayaw Kadayawan, Indak Indak sa Kadayawan, and Habi Kadayawan.

With almost everyone in the comfort of their homes, taking part in the online festivity could also be a perfect time to reflect and be proud of how the city was able to stand the test of time. (RGL)

Ortho-K vs Lasik: Their pros and cons

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:21 PM PDT

A lot of people who have refractive errors and do not want to wear eyeglasses turn to invasive surgeries thinking these will correct their eye problems.

To give you insights on these two available methods for correcting refractive errors without using eyeglasses, Orthokeratology and LASIK, here are their advantages and disadvantages:

    Ortho-K Pros:

    • Non-invasive - This eye-correction method only uses gas permeable that reshape cornea. This method reduces refractive errors such as myopia, astigmatism.

    • No side effect recorded - Because it's non-invasive, it usually follows that side effects are very minimal or even none at all.

    • Effect felt immediately - The newest technology in Ortho-K provides that the patient can immediately feel the positive result after an overnight's use. However, some may experience the result after a month, which is not very common.

    • Comfortable to use - Because Ortho-k only utilizes a custom-made corneal mold (a medical device that looks like a contact lens) that is worn while sleeping, the patient can hardly feel it.

    • Procedure is easy - Just wear the special lens overnight and viola!

    • Adjustable/ modifiable - Since it is made of highly specialized medical device, the eye doctor can adjust its measurement to fit the wearer's eye corrective needs. It is also modifiable to address the changes in our eyes as we age so we can enjoy the best vision in every stage of our life.

    • Retains original thickness of cornea - Since Ortho-K is no invasive, it will not make the cornea thin, thus maintaining its health and proper function for our eyes.

    • Best for athletes and those with active lifestyle/outdoor lifestyle - And since Ortho-K our cornea's thickness, it does not irritate the eyes easily or does not cause dry eyes even when these are exposed to extreme conditions, like too much heat, very low humidity, and dirty or sandy environments, thus unlimiting your physical activities.

    • Child- and senior citizen-friendly - Because Ortho-K does not involve invasive surgery, it is best suited for children as young as years old and senior citizens, the group of patients who are mostly discouraged to undergo invasive surgeries because of the risks and side effects that come with it.

    • Specially suited for children suffering myopia - Children who are diagnosed with juvenile or childhood myopia are highly encouraged to use Ortho-K to stop or control myopia and to prevent degenerative eye diseases when they reach adulthood.

    • Stops or slows down eye grade increase/prevents recurring eye problem - tends to minimize the eye problem recurrence controls eye grade progression.

    • Better option for patients not good candidate for eye surgery - There are patients who are not advised to undergo eye surgeries and Ortho-K provides them a better option if they don't want to wear eyeglasses.

    • Highly-recommended by most eye doctors - Most if not all non-invasive surgeries are highly recommended by experts because side effects are minimal and room for errors is lesser or even nil.

    • Cost-efficient - Cost-efficient in the long run because you don't need to go to the doctor often to manage the side effects and/or risks caused by invasive surgeries

    Ortho-K cons:

    • More expensive than Lasik or invasive eye surgeries - It may be cost-efficient in the long run but the patient needs to cough out a bigger amount of money in one sitting, a one-time big-time as cliche goes, for the custom-made corneal mold.

    • Strict maintenance - Ortho-K also requires strict maintenance using doctor prescribed solutions to keep the lenses clean and good to use.

    • Needs to wear it overnight - Ortho-K may be very safe and effective in improving your vision overnight, but you must wear it religiously while sleeping to maintain clear vision.

    • Follow up visit to doctor required - An Ortho-K specialist may require you to have a follow-up visit at least twice a year so he/she can monitor changes in your eye and decide whether you need to have adjustments on your Ortho-K lens measurements.

    • Strict hygiene routine required - Requires a strict hygiene routine for the wearers to maintain the lens' efficacy

    Lasik Pros:

    • Cheaper - Not as expensive as Ortho-K, you don't need to shell out a bigger amount of money in one sitting.

    • Does not require strict hygiene routine for the wearers - Since there are no lenses to maintain or protect, Lasik is advisable for patients who have no routine for hygiene practices.

    • No lens to wear overnight - After Lasik, patients are not advised to wear a specialized lens overnight.

    Lasik Cons:

    • Side effects and risks expected - Since it requires invasive surgery, side effects are expected and room for errors is possible.

    • Not advisable for athletes or people with active lifestyle - Those who have undergone eye surgeries are not advised to go out and expose their eyes to harsh elements, like wind, dust or glares. Their corneas are already thin making their eyes already extremely sensitive and easily dry.

    • Refractive errors may recur - Since it does not correct the drooping of or reshape the cornea, refractive errors may still recur especially after constant exposure to too much near-work activities like using digital devices, reading of books, too much school or office work, painting.

    • Cost-inefficient - In the long run, the cost due to the side effects of Lasik overruns the cheap cost in undergoing the procedure and visits to doctors may become frequent in the long run.

    • No guaranteed treatment - No matter how successful a Lasik procedure is, our eyes will still undergo post-Lasik physical and visual problems caused by our lifestyle and as a normal consequence of our body's aging process. And since Lasik as invasive surgery is unadjustable, after undergoing it there is no turning back if it fails.

    • Not advisable for all ages - Children are strictly not advised to undergo Lasik while senior citizens may opt to undergo it but are strongly discouraged because of the side effects and/or due to its risky and highly sensitive procedure.

    Stay safe Kadayawan!

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:06 PM PDT

As the city is still doing its efforts to limit the spread and to attain herd immunity against Covid-19, the 36th Kadayawan sa Dabaw will still be staged online, the same as last year.

Our way of celebrating Kadayawan might not be the same as before, but there is one thing that remains the same that every Dabawenyo loves during the festival, it's the Kadayawan Promos!

City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) Head Generose Tecson said that establishments are allowed to conduct Kadayawan promos but must comply with the minimum health protocols.

For sure, it's not just me who waited for the month of August to avail big discounts during the celebration of the Philippines' King of Festivals, it is expected that more people will definitely visit some establishments during its promo duration.

To help our local government with its efforts to contain the virus during the celebration, here are ways for us to have a safer Kadayawan sa Dabaw:

  • Stay Protected. Face masks must be properly worn and face shields must completely cover the face at all times. For face masks, cloth masks or surgical masks are recommended by health experts. With the threat of Sars-CoV-2 variants, double masking is encouraged. This is one of the primary health standards that we should observe whenever we go to crowded places like malls or other commercial establishments.

  • Stay Distanced. Always make sure that you are at least one meter apart from others to limit the opportunity of exposure. Together with a face mask and face shield, this effectively reduces the risk of being infected with the coronavirus.

  • Stay Sanitized. Regularly wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap for 20 seconds or clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub, these will help eliminate germs including viruses that may be on your hands.

  • Stay Untouched. According to a research titled "Face touching: A frequent habit that implications for hand hygiene", said that people touch their face around 23 times per hour, in this time of pandemic it is highly recommended to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth or your face in general with unclean hands. This is because they are good entry points for germs, bacteria, and viruses.

  • Get Vaccinated. When the opportunity comes, get your vaccine against the Covid-19. Based on existing medical and scientific research, those who are vaccinated are protected from being hospitalized or prevented from experiencing severe Covid-19 symptoms. Aside from having a layer of protection, there are establishments that offer special deals to those who are vaccinated.

  • Stay Cooperative. At the end of the day, our personal responsibility towards the pandemic can help manage the spread of Covid-19. By following the minimum health protocols, we can help make Davao City and the celebration of the 36th Kadayawan Festival safer. (JRO)

Apex Mining receives op taxpayer awards anew

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 06:36 PM PDT

FOR 10 years now, Apex Mining Company, Inc. (APX) has been receiving from the Municipality of Maco in Davao de Oro the latter's highest Taxpayer Award, proving that being a responsible mining firm, indeed, pays. Maco is where APX's tenement is located.

APX was again cited by the municipal government of Maco for being the top business and real property taxpayer for 2021.

Given during the municipality's celebration of its 17th Kaimonan Festival on June 23, 2021 at the ARMM Gym in Maco, the LGU of Maco stated that the awards given to APX for being the No. 1 Business Taxpayer and the No. 2 Real Property Taxpayer is in "recognition and deep appreciation for its invaluable and very significant contribution for the progress and development" of the municipality.

The plaques of recognition for the APX's awards were signed by none other than Maco's Mayor Dr. Alvera Veronica R. Rimando and acting treasurer, Girlie M. Gudmalin.

In her message during the awarding, Mayor Rimando expressed her deep gratitude and commendation to the mining firm.

"I would also like to acknowledge the Board of Directors, as well as the Management & Staff for your unwavering support and dedication in helping the public especially during these dire times of the pandemic by doing your part and more in supporting various local government programs," Mayor Rimando said.

She emphasized that the taxes that the mining firm have paid have funded several projects, programs, and activities, including its Covid-19 response.

"Your legacy as a corporation, truly, is to lend a helping hand not just to the members of your company but to our society as a whole in terms of financial relief and providing better opportunities to improve their quality of life. I have always admired the integrity and commendable principle of your institution which is why I will forever hold your company in the highest regard for your interminable commitment in practicing good governance in your organization," the mayor added in her speech.

Rimando also hopes that APX continues to advocate for the people by using its resources as a means to help as the mining firm also continues to develop and grow.

"And you can rest assured that the Local Government of Maco is ready and willing to act as a partner in any step you that you decide to take, provided that it is for the general welfare and common good of the public," the mayor added.

For his part, APX President Luis Sarmiento, in his message delivered by Richard Licang, resident manager of APX, thanked the Maco LGU for recognizing the commitment of the mining firm to be a responsible corporate citizen through the Top Taxpayer awards.

"APX has an unbroken tradition of paying the correct taxes since we started our commercial operations in 2009. The marching orders of our then president and now chairman emeritus, Dr Walter Brown was, 'Do not negotiate; let us pay the correct amount'," Sarmiento said in his message.

He emphasized that while almost all businesses seek to pay lower taxes, APX sees the taxes it pays to the government as its contribution to the economy, both in the national and local levels.

"And if we try to pay lower than what we should be paying, then, we are, in effect, short-changing our host communities and nearby barangays," Sarmiento said, adding that paying the correct taxes is the right thing to do and the sustainable way to do business.

He also reiterated APX's support to Maco, saying "APX is with you through thick and thin."

Sarmiento recalled that during the emergence of the pandemic in the first quarter of 2020 when many industries closed, lockdowns in communities were imposed, and workers were left either jobless or underemployed.

He said that APX was also greatly affected with mining initially excluded in the essential industries. And since they were not allowed to operate, APX instead intensified its collaboration with its partner LGUs, the community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure that no employee becomes jobless.

"We are grateful to our LGU partners for allowing us to operate at 50% manpower capacity, and gradually, at full capacity. Yes, from the 'old normal', all throughout this pandemic and as we move into the emerging 'new normal', you can count on the APX brand of malasakit. Today, we know that job generation is key if our economy is to swiftly recover and for many of our kababayans to get back on their feet. On that score, APX is at the forefront of generating jobs for the interior communities of both the IPs and non-IPs families," Sarmiento added in his message.

APX's Atty. Rodi A. Palma, vice president for Legal and Mine Compliance, Engr. Ferdinand B. Dobli, admin division manager, and Maria Fe B. Palconit, community relations manager, received the awards from Mayor Rimando, Vice Mayor Arthur Carlos Voltaire R. Rimando, Sangguniang Bayan Member Joel Penido, Gudmalin, and from the municipality's Assessor's office.

APX has been recognized for the same awards for nine consecutive years (2010 to 2019) by the Maco municipal government. There was an interruption when the country first encountered the dreaded Covid-19 in 2020, with all government activities and events limited by the country's Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, the national governing body tasked to "respond to affairs concerning emerging infectious diseases" such as Covid-19.

APX has contributed almost P3 billion to the national economy in the form of tax since its inception. This is aside from the IP royalties APX has paid, which has already reached more than P365 million.

And as Mayor Rimando said, APX is "what every corporation should aspire to be."

Dumper Rep. Bautista saddened by wedding controversy

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:55 AM PDT

DRIVERS United for Mass Progress and Equal Rights (Dumper) Partylist Representative Claudine Diana Bautista said she is saddened over her wedding becoming a "political spectacle."

In a statement forwarded to the media on Thursday, August 19, Bautista had acknowledged "all of the sentiments asserted by everyone."

Her statement comes days after controversy sparked on social media with netizens criticizing her for holding a "lavish" wedding while the plight of her constituents remains unaddressed amid the pandemic. Based on news reports, several known personalities like Agot Isidro, Enchong Dee, Ogie Diaz, and Pokwang also criticized Bautista.

Bautista, daughter of Davao Occidental Governor Claude Bautista, drew flak from netizens after Dubai-based fashion designer Michael Cinco posted a photograph of the wedding gown on social media.

"I hear you, and I have internalized all of the grievances that were brought up in light of what was supposed to be a private and personal milestone. Although given the situation, I would also like to express my sadness over how my wedding day, something that I have separated from my work as a public official, has been made into a political spectacle," Bautista said.

The Davao Occidental-based representative explained that the wedding had been planned for a long time with her husband, Jose French "Tracker" Lim, a businessman.

Bautista said she and her husband were hurt "to see how things after our wedding turned out."

"This was supposed to be the culminating event of a decades-long love story," Bautista said.

She described Lim as a "kind and loving person" who merely wanted to give her the wedding of her dreams. She also admitted they were hurt by the negative comments online.

"This celebration of our love was a product of my husband's hard work," she added.

The Dumper solon said they intended it to be a private wedding to keep it "as intimate as possible."

"However, access was unintentionally given through the post of my wedding gown designer, Michael Cinco and he mistakenly posted about the private event," she said.

The congresswoman said Cinco already apologized for the "unwanted attention" his post caused.

Bautista, meanwhile, responded to those who have been questioning her integrity as a public servant.

"Working for a public office, I have always valued the integrity of my work. I have always preferred to act silently and let my actions speak for themselves. I know that I have been doing everything in my capacity to get our sector through this pandemic and I understand that there are still some issues and concerns that have yet to be fixed. I assure everyone that we have never taken our eyes off of these concerns," she said.

The representative said her partylist was able to help vaccinate 18,000 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers. She also said they were able to provide assistance to thousands more through government assistance programs implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health, and Department of Labor-Tupad.

To address the effects of the pandemic, she also distributed more than P1.1 million worth grocery packs, personal protective equipment (PPEs), free insurance policies, and relief assistance to affected PUV drivers and commuters.

She also donated P3 million to doctors and nurses from her personal funds "to ensure that their tireless sacrifice is recognized."

The solon said she will move on with the issue and focus on addressing the pandemic and serve her constituents better.

"I will no longer indulge in the statements by people of influence against me as I will leave it up to my legal team to address this," Bautista said.

"Kaysa magsiraan tayo, ilaan natin ang enerhiyang meron tayo bilang isang komunidad sa pag-ahon mula sa pandemyang ito," she also said.

(Instead of bashing each other, let us redirect our energy in overcoming this pandemic as a community.)

Meanwhile, actor Enchong Dee has apologized for his comments against the legislator.

"I have been reckless in the tweet I posted and I take full responsibility for my lapse in judgement," Dee said on Twitter.

Tagum City had to quarantine Covid-19 patients at home during surge

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:54 AM PDT

TAGUM City Mayor Allan Rellon said when the city experienced a surge in Covid-19 cases in previous months, several Covid-19 patients had to be quarantined at their homes due to a lack of beds at hospitals or quarantine facilities.

Rellon said in a radio interview on Thursday, August 19, the city had more than 1,000 active cases in June this year.

"Katong 1,000 plus na positive, 800 plus na positive naa sa balay kay puno naman ang DRMC [Davao Regional Medical Center]. Ang among city isolation, puno na. Naa pa gyuy inn na among ka-partner puno na. Asa naman sila, sa balay na gyud," the mayor said in an interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio.

(When we had over 1,000 positive [active] cases, more than 800 of them were under home quarantine because DRMC was already fully occupied. So were our city isolation and our partner inns. We had to quarantine them at home.)

He added even severe cases were forced to be under home quarantine. One patient even died at home while waiting to be transported to DRMC.

Despite under home quarantine, he said they are continuously monitoring them.

The city's active cases declined to around 300 cases when the city and the entire Davao del Norte shifted to modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in July.

Tagum, currently under general community quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restriction until August 31, is currently seeing an average of 200 to 300 active cases, he said.

"Naay effect tong amo gihimo na MECQ and GCQ with heightened restrictions (The MECQ and GCQ with heightened restrictions had an effect in lowering the active cases)," Rellon said.

With the recent detection of two Delta variant cases in the city, the mayor said they are intensifying their efforts to prevent the further spread of the virus.

"Medyo pugong mi ron. Ang among effort nga mugamay ang new cases, mudaghan ang mu-recover para ang atong hospital beds, ma-ICU [intensive care unit] or isolation room, naa kanunay reserved sa mga critical condition," he said.

(We are currently controlling the situation. We wanted our cases to decline and have more recoveries to decongest our hospital beds, ICU, or isolation rooms so that we will have reserved beds for patients under critical condition.)

The mayor said the recent Delta case, reported on Sunday, August 15, is a DRMC nurse with five close contacts, who are currently under observation.

Rellon said they are intensifying their enforcement of the health protocols within communities.

As of August 18, the city had a total of 4,584 confirmed cases, wherein 4,064 already recovered, 299 were active cases, and 221 succumbed to the disease.

Davao City council-led mobile vaccination off to a good start

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:23 AM PDT

THE mobile vaccination led by the Sangguniang Panlungsod had already administered Covid-19 vaccines to 783 individuals.

Davao City Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte, committee chairperson on health, said in a radio interview on Wednesday, August 18, that the mobile vaccination had been conducted in Barangay Sirib, Calinan District on August 17, and in Barangay Los Amigos, Tugbok District on August 11.

Villafuerte said the second rollout covered 500 beneficiaries in Barangay Sirib. In the first rollout, the mobile vaccination benefitted 283 individuals in Barangay Los Amigos.

She said the City Council organized the mobile vaccination program following Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio's request to help the city government in its vaccination campaign by urging councilors to form their own vaccination teams.

She added that the mayor on Monday, August 16 also approved the project design of mobile vaccination as well as its budget.

"They (councilors) can now visit barangays and schedule the rollout because the Mayor will support us all the way," Villafuerte said in an interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio.

She said the success of the first and second rollout of the mobile vaccination program is positive, and that other councilors are now preparing for vaccination rollouts in their Areas of Responsibility (AORs). She said some even went to the vaccination site on August 17 to observe.

Villafuerte said the mayor divided the 182 barangays for each councilor as its AOR. She was assigned 16 barangays -- 10 in Calinan District and six in Marilog District. She said she will be helping other third district councilors in their mobile vaccination.

She added that the medical team that helped the first two vaccination rollouts could be tapped by the other councilors as well.

Villafuerte is now requesting the help of barangays for coordination for the mobile vaccination primarily in the listing of people qualified for the vaccine.

Based on her experience, there was a delay in the rollout because the list of barangays included senior citizens who were already deceased or already vaccinated.

She encouraged the barangays to support this endeavor because their proper cooperation gives the vaccination teams an upper hand to make each vaccination activity a success.

Villafuerte said they are determined to help the city government to reach herd immunity.

"Gihatagan mi challenge ni mayor na gusto niya ramp up 20,000 doses administered daily. She wants us to meet goal by November para sa first dose, we are going to help her in this effort," Villafuerte said.

(We were challenged by the mayor, she wants to ramp up the vaccination up to 20,000 doses administered daily. She wants us to meet the goal by November for the first dose, we are going to help her with this effort.)

Duterte-Carpio also requested the councilors in identifying Priority Groups A2 (senior citizen) and A3 (persons with comorbidities) who have not yet been vaccinated.

The mayor said the mobile vaccination that the councilors will embark on is a "set-up and go" type wherein the councilors will identify a site in coordination with the barangay.

The City Government had recently organized mobile vaccination sites for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers, migrating workers, and senior citizens.

She urged Dabawenyos not to depend on the mobile vaccination initiative as the Safe Davao Quick Response (DQR) vaccination online scheduling system is already available.

"If we see there is a slot sa DQR scheduler nato sa atong fixed vaccination sites, mas maayo they immediately have themselves take that vaccination schedule para mabakunahan sila," Duterte-Carpio said.

(If there is an available slot in the DQR scheduler, it would be better if they could get that schedule and have themselves vaccinated.)

She also encouraged Dabawenyos to take advantage of the sectoral vaccination. (With reports from CIO)

Over 300,000 Davao City residents fully vaccinated

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:23 AM PDT

SIX months since Davao City rolled out its Covid-19 vaccination program, more than 300,000 Dabawenyos are already fully vaccinated, according to the August 17, 2021 data of the Davao City Vaccination Cluster.

According to the Vaccination Cluster, a total of 303,282 vaccinees were already administered with the Covid-19 vaccine.

Based on the breakdown, 43.370 are from the Priority Group A1 (health care workers), 80,125 are A2 (senior citizens), 111,646 are A3 (persons with comorbidities), 61,290 are A4 (essential workers), and 6,821 A5 (indigent population, including residents belonging to the indigenous peoples (IP) communities).

Total persons vaccinated is 15 percent of the targeted 1.2 million vaccinees to achieve herd immunity.

Meanwhile, a total of 465,391 doses were already administered for the first dose.

    Out of the total, 52,730 were administerd to the A1 sector, 83,762 for A2, 138,392 for A3, 174,355 for A4, and 16,152 for A5.

The Davao City Government started inoculating the Covid-19 vaccines early March this year, nearly a year since the city recorded its first Covid-19 cases.

Among the vaccines that were allocated by the national government to the city are Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson Janssen, Gamaleya Sputnik V, and Moderna.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio recently said in a radio interview that the City will now be expanding its targeted daily vaccination from 10,000 to 15,000 vaccinees in order to achieve herd immunity before the end of the year.

Aside from opening more vaccination hubs, the City recently tapped the City Council through its councilors to set up their own mobile vaccination team. The mayor said the councilors will be tapping the help of the barangays, especially in far-flung areas, in identifying A2 and A3 individuals who have not yet registered for the vaccination program.

Duterte-Carpio also reminded those who received their first dose to religiously get their second dose on the prescribed date.

The mayor revealed that one of the challenges that the city is facing right now in its vaccination drive is the missed second doses as some recipients failed to return for their second dose for various reasons.

"Ginapakusgan nato ang kampanya sa second dose sa mga tao. Ang bakuna two doses dili siya one. Ang full protection sa vaccination is dapat kinahanglan makuha ang second dose. Naka-reserve nana daan para sa inyuha so it is very important nga fully vaccinated," Duterte-Carpio said in an interview on Monday, August 16.

(We are strengthening our campaign for the second dose. The vaccine requires two doses. To get full protection, you need to get two doses of the vaccine. The second dose vaccines are already reserved for those that have taken their first dose.)

Under the resolution released by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases, a person is considered fully vaccinated for Covid-19 if it has been more than or equal to two weeks after having received the second dose in a two-dose series, or more than or equal to two weeks after having received a single-dose vaccine.

Also, the vaccines administered to the individual should be included on the Emergency Use Authorization List or Compassionate Special Permit issued by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration; or Emergency Use Listing of the World Health Organization.

Experts said completing the required dose by the manufacturer will help reach the vaccine's maximum potential. Thus, the city mayor urged Dabawenyos who received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine to make an appointment and get fully vaccinated.

Signature coffee drinks to try in Davao City

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:23 AM PDT

ASIDE from my regular orders -- like the pour-over coffee, iced americano, or cappuccino -- I also enjoy trying the different signature espresso-based drinks that some of our coffee shops and cafes have to offer.

I like that the coffee shops here each have their own respective signature drink. These signature drinks make discovering and revisiting coffee shops a fun activity.

Here are some of the memorable signature coffee drinks I have tried in Davao:

Mocha Lava by Purge Coffee Roasters and Stash Coffee Co.

Think the classic cafe mocha but on another level. This drink has a shot of espresso, milk, chocolate ice cream, drizzled with chocolate syrup and sprinkled with cocoa powder. This is an indulgent drink that will satisfy chocolate and coffee lovers. I also love the playfulness of this drink with its generous scoop of ice cream.

Purge Coffee Roasters is located along Tulip Drive, Juna Subd. Stash Coffee Co. is located on the 2nd floor of Davao TBT Bldg Corner Inigo St. and Porras St., Obrero.

    Passionfruit Magicano by Espresso Lab

Espresso Lab's Passionfruit was a pleasant surprise when I first had it. What sets this apart from other coffee beverages is the unique combination of passionfruit and coffee. I just love how the sweet and tangy flavor of passionfruit balances out the coffee. I also like how this drink gives off a tropical vibe and is something you would order in a beach resort.

Espresso Lab is located on the ground floor of Lanang Suites, Lanang.

    Espresso Tonic by Kanto Coffee

While the Passionfruit Magicano gives off the tropical vibe, Kanto Coffee's Espresso Tonic is the perfect coffee drink if you are having a summer party. This is espresso with tonic water. I like having this drink ice-cold on a hot afternoon or morning.

Kanto Coffee is located at Food Trip, Road 1, Dona Vicenta Village. They also have a pop-up at the Ayala Abreeza Mall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

    Shiro Blend by Lifecycle Coffee

This has to be my favorite white cold brew in the city. It is one of those drinks that put a smile on my face after drinking it. I think this is a balanced coffee drink because its sweetness and creaminess do not drown out the coffee. I like that I can still get that chocolatey and nutty taste from the coffee. It is one of those coffee drinks that I constantly crave.

Lifecycle Coffee is located in Langub.

    Summer by 4th Street Cafe

This is another coffee drink that screams summer. It's Iced Americano with lemon syrup and topped with apples. I love how the citrus and brightness of the lemon cut through the coffee. I also like the subtlety of the apple every time I take a sip of this drink. It is one refreshing coffee drink that I enjoy before I go home after a day's work.

Fourth Street Cafe is located along Narra St.

Davao City, Globe partner for internet connectivity

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:16 AM PDT

DABAWENYOS can soon easily connect to wifi as Davao City partners with one of the largest internet service providers in the country, Globe.

Globe officially launched its partnership with the City Government of Davao on August 18, 2021 through its KonekTayo Wifi and GoWifi, solidifying the network's support to the progressive city.

Dabawenyos can easily connect their gadgets to a wifi using GoWifi when they are at the city hall or at People's Park. At the same time, those who are residing in barangays Bucana, Sasa, and at SIR villages 1 and 2 can soon easily access the internet through Globe's KonekTayo Wifi.

Ernest Cu, Globe president and chief executive officer, said the initiative is part of Globe's aim to sustain the positive impact on Filipinos through innovative products and services.

"Today's kickoff is more as a significant milestone as Globe and Davao elevate their partnership to new heights. This partnership gives the people of Davao accessible connectivity through GoWifi and KonekTayo Wifi. Bringing internet to the Filipino masses and getting them online has been a priority for Globe especially as our current situation makes it an essential component for most of our everyday lives; it enables us to work, to learn, to protect our health, to communicate, and access essential services," Cu said.

He said with this partnership in place, Globe together with the Davao City leaders seek to connect residents and communities online so that they can have access to important services that require internet connection.

"Amidst the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, we at Globe have been relentless in our acquisition efforts and permitting activities to serve communities in Davao," Cu said.

He added none of its initiatives would have been possible if not for the support of the Davao City leaders who share in their ambition to make the Philippines a truly digital nation.

For her part, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio thanked Globe Telecom for its support to the city over the years.

"On behalf of the City Government of Davao, I would like to thank Globe Telecom for your support to the City Government over the years and for providing fast and secure internet connectivity to the public, this time through the Globe GoWifi and KonekTayo Wifi services," Duterte-Carpio said during the event.

"With the growing numbers of internet users in the city comes the need for faster, more secure and more affordable and accessible wifi connections, especially now that the Covid-19 pandemic has pushed us to turn to online platforms to reach out to others, to access basic needs and to pursue essential activities related to health, work, education, and economy," she said.

The virtual event was also attended by Davao City Vice Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte and other city officials such as Office of the City Planning and Development Office head Ivan C. Cortez, Mark Layog of the Vice Mayor's Office, among many others.
