Covid-19 positivity rate in Davao City hits 30.5%

Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:57 AM PDT

DAVAO City has hit a record-high 30.5-percent positivity rate of Covid-19 infections, mostly coming from household transmissions.

Given this, Dabawenyos are advised to cut down on family and social gatherings, to be vigilant and disciplined in following the minimum health measures, and to get vaccinated.

Davao City Covid-19 Task Force Spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser, during the Covid-19 Alert program of 87.5 Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR) on Wednesday said the positivity rate is very high than the acceptable level.

"Ang pinaka-acceptable level is five below. Medyo taas jud sya," she said.

(The acceptable level of positivity rate is five below. So the 30.5 is quite high.)

As of September 1, 2021, Davao City logged 443 new Covid-19 cases, raising its total of active cases to 5,626.

The city's total Covid-19 cases reached 38,110 and of this number, 31,272 have recovered and 1,212 have died.

Reiterating the importance of following measures to stem transmission of the Sars-CoV-2 virus, Schlosser said the public must continue wearing face masks at all times, avoiding gatherings and crowded places, social distancing, frequent hand hygiene and getting vaccinated.

Schlosser said, "Our data shows daghang mga household transmissions, meaning katong sa mga kapamilyahan diha nga nagahold na og gatherings, mamalihog intawon mi, iavoid sa nato siguro ang pagcelebrate sa atong mga birthday og pag create og family gatherings."

(Our data shows there are a lot of household transmissions, meaning those families who have already been holding gatherings, please let us avoid celebrating our birthdays or creating family gatherings.)

She said it is a difficult request considering that Filipinos are sociable by nature and love to get together with their families.

"Pero this is not the right time to do that kay daghan gyud kaayo ta og cases and with the presence of the Delta variant, considered to be highly transmissible compared sa other variants, holding a gathering or social gathering sa atong families and friends is medyo high-risk nga behavior at the moment," the city health official said.

(This is not the right time to do that because we have too many Covid-19 cases and with the presence of the Delta variant, considered to be highly transmissible compared to other variants, holding a gathering or social gathering with our families and friends is a high-risk behavior at the moment.)

She added that enforcing household lockdowns in the past months proved to be effective.

Due to the surge of household transmission cases, they are mobilizing the barangay health emergency response teams and the Philippine National Police to strengthen the household lockdowns.

Schlosser said, "Dili lang isa ka myembro sa pamilya ang infected, tag duha, tag tulo, tag upat, o ang entire family. Mas daghang household transmission bantug mas daghan tang household lockdown."

(It is not just one family member is infected but two, or three, or four, and sometimes the entire family. With a lot of household transmissions that's why we have more household lockdowns.)(PR)

Guv wants Davao Oriental under ECQ as coronavirus cases rise

Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:54 AM PDT

WITH the surge in Covid-19 cases in Davao Oriental, Governor Nelson Dayanghirang wants the entire province to be placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Dayanghirang said in a radio interview on Thursday, September 2, that the Covid-19 cases in the province have been increasing in recent weeks.

He added the recently detected Delta positive specimens in the province had possibly contributed to a surge of cases.

The governor said he called an emergency meeting with the mayors to formalize their request on Friday, September 3.

Dayanghirang said the recommendation comes a day after the entire province recorded 238 daily new cases, the highest since the pandemic started.

"Actually, ang atong (our) provincial hospital, so far puno na gyud kaayo (is already fully occupied). Ang atong (Our) isolation facilities, hapit-hapit na mapuno (is also almost full)," he said.

Prior to the surge, he said the province already anticipated it by adding more bed capacities. It still was not able to anticipate the widespread transmission caused by the highly infectious variant.

Dayanghirang reminded his constituents to minimize their movements around the province to curb the spread of the virus.

The Department of Health-Davao Region, as of August 31, detected 10 Delta positive specimens from Davao Oriental, most of which were from Mati City.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases recently extended the quarantine status of the entire province under general community quarantine with no restrictions until September 7

As of September 1, Davao Oriental has a total of 5,603 confirmed cases, wherein 1,279 are active cases, 4,172 have recovered and 152 died.

No talks on VP run during Imee’s May 9 visit, Sara says

Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:54 AM PDT

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio denied the claims of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, that Senator Imee Marcos went to Davao City to discuss her intention of being her vice president.

The presidential daughter issued a statement on Thursday, September 2, two days after the President claimed that Marcos is eyeing to become the running mate of his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio should she vie for the presidency

"Ngayon si Imee, medyo kasi si Imee ganito ang laro nyan e, pinupuntahan niya si Mayor Duterte sa Davao hoping na kung magtakbo yun, siya ang maging bise," Duterte said in a taped speech aired on Tuesday.

(Now, Imee, her game is like this, she goes to Mayor Duterte in Davao hoping that if [Mayor Sara] runs, she'll be the vice president.)

Duterte-Carpio denied that this was discussed when the senator went to the city.

"This is not true. She visited me in Davao last May 29 to personally relay her birthday wishes. So far, this is the only visit she has made to me in Davao," she said.

Duterte-Carpio, in a previous radio interview, confirmed that they discussed politics with the Marcos siblings Imee and former Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Jr. -- during their recent visit to Davao City. The Marcoses went to the city to personally greet her on her 43rd birthday.

"When politicians gather, they'll talk about politics. Expected na na, wala kay makit-an na politicians na nagtapok na dili magistorya og politika (That is already expected from politicians when they meet, they usually discuss politics)," she said in an interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio. Duterte-Carpio, however, did not divulge any further what they talked about in particular.

Meanwhile, the mayor only confirmed that Senators Sherwin Gatchalian and Christopher "Bong" Go personally expressed their offer to run as her vice president.

On Former Secretary of National Defense Gilbert Teodoro Jr. being her possible tandem, Duterte-Carpio said "the proposal was made known through common friends."

Teodoro had recently visited the city and received his two doses of Covid-19 vaccine here. He did not mention if he is also eyeing to be the mayor's tandem, although he said the mayor has the potential of being the next leader of the country.

Duterte-Carpio also said some certain groups are lobbying for Majority Floor Leader and Leyte First District Representative Martin Romualdez and Senator Sonny Angara to be her running mate, but she cannot confirm if these are true.

Meanwhile, she read from news reports that Bongbong is eyeing a possible tandem with her.

Duterte-Carpio has not formally announced her political plans for the 2022 elections. Although she recently revealed that she is open to run for the presidency.

The President, who recently accepted the nomination of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) to be the party's running vice president, said he will back out if his daughter will decide to run next year.

The mayor, however, told both Duterte and Go to "own up publicly their decision to run as a tandem" and stop talking about her and make her the basis on their running.

Mayor Sara: I am not angry at Duterte, Go

Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:33 AM PDT

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio belied claims that she is angry at President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Bong Go or envious of the powers they hold.

Duterte-Carpio issued a statement on Thursday, September 2, 2021, in response to an online article that is being passed around in group chats and social media posts.

"The source of this article does not know me as well. I am not angry at President Duterte or Senator Bong Go nor am I envious of the power that they hold," the Presidential daughter said.

The mayor added that the "responsibility that comes with power is exhausting, there is nothing to be jealous about it."

Duterte-Carpio also reiterated her recent statement that she is not holding grudges against Go with regard to his relationship with her father.

Duterte-Carpio issued the statement in response to a published article on politics.com.ph, a blog about Philippine politics, with the title, "All gloves off! Sara v Bong Go/Honeylet [Honeylet Avanceña -- Duterte's common law wife] is proxy fight between Duterte's first and second families."

According to the article, the mayor and her siblings, Paolo and Sebastian, "have toed the line by staying in the background while showing a united front behind their father."

The article's source said the Duterte siblings "have long harbored a grudge against Go who has been the President's gatekeeper since his days as mayor of Davao City."

The Presidential daughter denied that there is a conflict between her and President Rodrigo Duterte's former special assistant.

"This is not true. It seems the source talking does not know me. I do not hold a grudge against Senator Go with regard to his relationship with PRRD [President Rodrigo Roa Duterte]," Duterte-Carpio said.

She added she is "not the keeper of the President," adding her father is allowed to have his friends similar to her.

"Why would I be furious about the need for an appointment to see the President, what matters is I see the President," the mayor said.

The mayor said having an appointment to see the President "may be odd to many," but she said it is a "normal thing" in her family since the late 1990s.

She called the article's source "mababaw" or shallow.

Duterte-Carpio's latest comments came after she urged her father and Go to "own up to" their political decisions for next year's elections.

Earlier, Go issued a statement saying that he already talked to the mayor.

"Wala kaming isyu sa isa't-isa. Kung anong pagmamahal ko sa tatay, ganun din ang pagmamahal ko sa mga anak. Alam ni Pangulong Duterte yan," the senator said.

(We don't have issues with one another. My love and support to the father are equally the same to his children. President Duterte knows that.)

Go recently said that he is not interested in running for a higher post and he will support the Dutertes regardless of their political plans in 2022.

15 Davao establishments may be placed under lockdown due to Covid-19 cluster cases

Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:22 AM PDT

FIFTEEN commercial establishments in Davao City are on the verge of being placed under lockdown due to a clustering of Covid-19 cases.

Covid-19 Task Force spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser said in a radio interview on Wednesday, September 1, that 15 establishments are currently being assessed by the city's health and security cluster teams. Once tagged as high risk, the establishment will be placed under lockdown.

Currently, there are 15 establishments at risk of being placed under lockdown, of which she did not elaborate.

"Ang pinakabasehan nato sa atong (The basis of our) zoning containment strategy or lockdown or quarantine sa atong (of our) establishment is cluster of cases," Schlosser said in an interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio.

"Meaning, kung naa gyud sila (if they have) number of cases, ma-apil sila sa ma-risk asses (they will be risk assessed), and then if ilahang (their) risk assessment will turn out high risk, maapil gyud sila sa (they will be included in the) lockdown," she added.

The spokesperson also said among the bases for the lockdown are failure to implement minimum public health standards among workplaces and enforcing alternative work arrangements.

She added the workplace's physical arrangement and ventilation are also being monitored.

Schlosser said failure to impose these measures is one of the contributory factors for the transmission of viruses in these places.

"Pag naa na gyud cluster of cases, whether nag-follow sila sa minimum public [health] standards or not, kinahanglan gyud mapa-limit ang operation and movement of the people inside the establishment para ma-cutoff nato ang chain of infection," the official said.

(If there is already a cluster of cases, whether they are following the minimum public health standards or not, there is a need to limit their

operation and movement of the people inside the establishment to cut off the chain of infection.)

Aside from establishments, she said the City had also imposed granular lockdowns on government offices due to the clustering of cases.

Schlosser said they had to shut down the City's Covid-19 Operation Center after one of its employees tested positive.

The city is currently disinfecting the place and employees who had close contact with the index case are forced to undergo quarantine.

Meanwhile, based on the recent data, most Covid-19 transmission cases were reported among households, resulting in many houses under lockdown.

With the surge of cases, Schlosser said the infection spreads faster.

"Di lang isa ka miyembro sa pamilya ang ma-positive kundili tag-tulo tag-upat (Not only a single member of the family tests positive, but three or four), [or] worse is entire family," she said.
