Southern Leyte lawmaker tests positive for coronavirus

SOUTHERN Leyte lone district representative Roger Mercado said Sunday, September 5, 2021, that he has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

"To all persons I have spoken or encountered, please take the necessary precaution and quarantine to avoid the spread of Covid-19," said the 70-year-old congressman.

"We will fight and heal as one," he added.

The solon had his reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test at the Ospa Farmers Medical Center in Ormoc City on Friday, September 3.

"He voluntarily subjected to RT-PCR (swab) test as a requirement for his dental surgery and so far, he is asymptomatic," added the congressman's son, Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado.

The mayor said they have already started the contact tracing to those who have primary exposure to the congressman, most especially those persons who have experienced face-to-face contact within one meter and for at least 15 minutes during the five-day period before the date of his swabbing.

"The City Government of Maasin would like to re-assure the Maasinhons that we are on top of the situation. We will surely exhaust all our efforts and take all the possible measures for the safety and security of all Maasinhons," the mayor said.

Meanwhile, the city also reported its first two cases of Delta variant on Sunday.

The Delta cases are from Barangay Ibarra and Canturing.

According to the mayor, he will issue an executive order "for possible granular lockdown of the area and swabbing of identified primary contacts and family members."

He also asked for those secondary and tertiary contacts to self-isolate.

"Please be vigilant at all times, follow basic health protocols, and get vaccinated as soon as possible," he added.

As of Sunday, Maasin had 101 active cases of Covid-19. (SunStar Philippines)

Maritime center executive in stable condition after stabbing attack in Tacloban

THE deputy executive director of National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) has been in good stable condition following a stabbing attack in Tacloban City Sunday, September 5, 2021, police said.

Mayla Macadawan, 41, sustained a stab wound at her left upper arm after an unidentified suspect attacked her with a knife while she was sleeping in her bedroom at the NMP staff house in Barangay 97-Cabalawan, Tacloban around 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to the police, the NMP official managed to scream aloud and struggled at knifepoint.

The suspect fled the scene after the assault.

The duty in-house security guards came to the rescue and gave her first aid before she was brought to the hospital.

Responding policemen found scattered things and bloodstains inside the victim's bedroom, sofa, kitchen and hallway.

No personal belongings were lost at the scene, according to the police.

Authorities are conducting a manhunt operation against the suspect. (SunStar Philippines)

Man nabbed over P340,000 worth of ‘shabu’ in Leyte

POLICE and anti-narcotics agents arrested a 30-year-old man after P340,000 worth of suspected shabu was seized from his possession during the buy-bust operation in Palompon, Leyte.

Rex Marquez, with live-in partner and identified as a high-value target, was rounded up during the joint operation on September 3, 2021.

A poseur buyer was able to purchase from the suspect a sachet believed to be containing shabu.

During the body search, operatives recovered from the suspect's possession and control another four small heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing suspected shabu, five medium-size sachets believed to be containing shabu, buy-bust money and other personal items.

The confiscated drugs have an estimated weight of 50 grams, according to the Leyte Police Provincial Office.

Marquez will be facing charges for violation of Section 5 and 11, Article II of Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (SunStar Philippines)

Top 9 most wanted person nabbed in Leyte

JOINT police operatives in Leyte arrested the Top 9 most wanted person in the province for a rape case.

Joed "Yoyo" Tabat, 33, and a resident of Barangay Ponong, Bato, Leyte, was facing a warrant dated October 18, 2019.

Colonel Rodelio Samson, director of Leyte Police Provincial Office (LPPO), said they will intensify the intelligence-driven operations against wanted persons in the province and put them behind bars to give justice to the victims.

Tabat was arrested in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Baybay City during a manhunt operation on September 3, 2021.

The operatives were from Bato Municipal Police Station, led by Major Jayson Balbarona; LPPO Provincial Intelligence Unit, led by Lieutenant Colonel Dinvir Revita; Baybay City Police Station, headed by Lieutenant Joemen Collado; and Regional Intelligence Unit 8 led by Lieutenant Colonel Felix Gervacio Jr.

Executive judge Ephrem Suarez Abando, of the Regional Trial Court-Branch 18 in Hilongos, Leyte, did not recommend bail to the accused.

Hundreds join ride for justice in Leyte

HUNDREDS of motorcycle and bike riders joined on Saturday, September 4, 2021, the 15th year commemoration of mass grave discovery and exhumation in Sitio Sapang Dako in Barangay Caulisihan, Inopacan, Leyte.

"It's fitting now to move on from the grim past of the massacre to peace. And never again that our people will suffer injustice," said Inopacan Mayor Azucena Mirambel during the commemorative event.

The mayor also acknowledged Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla and other local officials for their support during the activity.

According to Mirambel, the governor is planning to construct a memorial at the mass gravesite aside from the ongoing road project leading to Caulisihan.

The Leyte Police Provincial Office, along with the Philippine Army, force multipliers, and advocacy groups, also provided assistance to the participants of the simultaneous ride who came from different areas of Eastern Visayas.

Tanod shoots self after failed courtship

A 52-YEAR-OLD barangay tanod shot himself in the head after an alleged love interest rejected him Tabango, Leyte recently.

The victim's relatives said the tanod was very sad when he arrived at their place before the incident.

After he turned down an offer to drink a glass of local wine, the victim sat on the grassy portion and shot himself using a caliber .45 pistol.

In an initial investigation, authorities said the victim "suffered deep sadness" due to failed courtship.

Police recovered from the scene an empty shell for caliber. 45 and a picture of a woman whom the victim allegedly courted.
