| Navy tests fires missile off Basilan Posted: 30 Oct 2021 05:43 AM PDT THE Philippine Navy, through Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM), successfully tested its Spike ER Missile off Basilan province, a top Navy official announced Saturday, October 30, 2021. Rear Admiral Toribio Adaci, Jr., NFWM command, said the Spike ER Missile was launched from one of the Multi-Purpose Attack Crafts (MPAC) of the 3rd Boat Attack Division during Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) events Thursday, October 28, 17.8 nautical miles Southwest off Salkulakit Island, Basilan province. Adaci said the missile was fired from MPAC BA489 and hit its target dead center from a distance of four kilometers. For the exercise, floating targets were constructed for the live firing exercise, according to Adaci. "Aside from the missile firing, participating warships also fired and tested their naval guns," he added. The Spike ER Missile is the navy's first missile capable of penetrating 1,000 millimeters (39 inches) of rolled homogeneous armor. It is a flexible missile system proven by its dual guidance system, which is the command and homing guidance, capable of hitting targets at a maximum distance of eight kilometers. Adaci said this is the second time the Spike ER Missile was successfully launched and tested after its delivery to the Philippine Navy in 2018. He said this was the first time that the missile was operationally tested during a live firing exercise. The successful firing of the missile and its accurate hitting of the target also highlights the much-enhanced capability of the Navy to protect the seas and littoral areas of our maritime environment. The event was part of the five-day Philippine Navy Exercise Pagsisikap 2021, which aims to test wartime and peacetime doctrines in the conduct of amphibious operations, maritime interdiction operations, surveillance and reconnaissance of the maritime areas, civil-military operations, and a host of other traditional and non-traditional naval operations. Aside from validating techniques, tactics and procedures during the exercise, Exercise Pagsisikap 2021 also serves as a venue for the training of sailors and marines deployed in western Mindanao. Major General William Gonzales, Joint Task Force (JTF)-Sulu commander, identified the Abu Sayyaf surrenderers as Amil Isnain Jamih, Rado Wahing, Bellor Amad, Saburani Paduh, Alvin Jakkah, Nassir Bassal, Benajar Isnari, Cisar Killih, Abdunnur Alawi and Fradzkan Sayyadi. Gonzales said most of the 10 Abu Sayyaf surrenderers, who turned over six Garand rifles and a caliber .45 pistol, were followers of one-armed Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron. They were presented to the Talipao Municipal Task Force to End Local Armed Conflict (MTF-Elac) in a simple ceremony at Lincoln Hall of Talipao municipality in Barangay Bilaan. During the ceremony, the Abu Sayyaf surrenderers were acknowledged by the municipal government to undergo the reintegration program. The MTF-Elac is Sulu's counterpart to the national government's National Task Force to End Local Armed Communist Conflict (NTF-Elcac). Police Captain Jemu Ramolete, Taipao municipal police chief, issued security clearance to the Abu Sayyaf surrenderers to facilitate their legal documentation and eventual mainstreaming as civilians. "The Abu Sayyaf returnees is a tangible proof of our intensified campaign to free Sulu from Abu Sayyaf influence. This is a testament to our AFP's commitment to win the peace. From a once lethal force, we have gone a long way to provide a non-lethal option to win the peace," Gonzales said. "We are welcoming our brothers who have been victimized by the wrongdoings of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG). We are committed to ending the ASG's influence in our municipality. With the strong partnership of our security forces, peace and development will reign in Talipao," Talipao Mayor Nivocadnezar Tulawie said. The 10 Abu Sayyaf surrenderers were encouraged to return to the folds of the law upon seeing that the government is sincere in its program to develop the province of Sulu The Provincial Task Force to End Local Armed Conflict (PTF-Elac) provided last month some 1.2 kilometers of water pipe for the construction of a water system in the conflict-affected community of Bud Bunga in Talipao. Among those who benefited from the program were families of the Abu Sayyaf surrenderers. (SunStar Zamboanga) This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
