Published by | | | | The pandemic has been economically tough for many Americans, but especially for women — and particularly for women of color. The impact of disproportionate job losses and a lack of wealth accumulation has resulted in what's being called the covid "she-cession." To help women navigate the economic challenges and uncertainty of this time, we collaborated with The Washington Post's Business desk to release a series of stories offering financial advice and insight. Check out all four pieces below. | | | | | | Whether you're doing well financially or struggling, economic empowerment begins with the basics — managing the money you have. Michelle Singletary, The Post's award-winning personal finance columnist, has a simple budgeting trick to help. | | | | | | Amid a financial crisis that demanded action, investing became an opportunity that attracted new entrants, many of them millennial women. | | | | | | | She's a first-time homebuyer | | | | | Enforced savings during the pandemic and good advice from loan officers helped Kimberly De La Cruz, a single mother, find a home she could afford — even in the hot real estate market of Las Vegas. | | | | | | | Shifting spending priorities | | | | | Living through a pandemic has made many women reevaluate the way they spend and save their money — forgoing or even skipping things and experiences they once bought. | | | | | Three need-to-know stories | | | (iStock; Washington Post illustration) | 01.The Supreme Court is set to hear three abortion-related cases in the coming weeks, including one today on whether the Justice Department has grounds to sue the state of Texas to block its six-week ban on abortions. In another case, Mississippi has asked the court to overturn Roe v. Wade. If that happens, people seeking abortions in the South and Midwest would have to travel hundreds of miles to get the procedure, according to a new report. 02.Last week, authorities announced that human remains found in the open Yucca Valley desert are those of 30-year-old Lauren Cho, bringing an end to the months-long search for the Korean American musician, chef, artist and former music teacher. "The cause and manner of death is pending toxicology results," the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said. 03.A group of LGBTQ Afghans who fled their home country have arrived in Britain, including students and activists who spoke out about their rights in Afghanistan. The 29 people are the first in a wave that London says it will evacuate, as advocates warn they have received calls from hundreds more people who fear Taliban persecution. | | | | | | | A story to make you smile | | | Meghan Roth is home again with her son after suffering a cardiac event in the Boston Marathon. (Family photo) | | The day of the Boston Marathon in October was ideal for a 26.2-mile run. It was Megan Roth's first marathon since giving birth to her 10-month-old son, and she had hoped to improve on her personal best of 2 hours 44 minutes. Then, eight miles into the race, Roth had a cardiac episode, writes Cindy Boren in The Post. "I don't even remember hitting the ground," said Roth, 34. "So when I woke up in the ambulance, I didn't realize the seriousness of it." Others did. Marie Rogers, a retired critical care nurse, found Roth "lying face down, making incoherent sounds." Rogers said she started CPR and asked a woman on the sideline to call 911. Soon, other runners stopped to help, she said. Roth was taken to Tufts Medical Center and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator was placed in her chest. Four days after the race, she was home in Edina, Minn., reunited with her son. "People have been so amazing," she said. "It's just such a happy ending." | | | | | But before we part, some recs | | Monique WooPhoto editor, The LilyWhat's making me feel nostalgic:El Azteca Chileta Mango lollipops. During a recent trip to Miami, I came across these lollipops that I haven't had for more than 10 years. These chili-covered mango candies reminded me of when my friends and I would trade snacks in middle school. How I'm staying active:Along with weekly weightlifting, I've been climbing at a gym in D.C. It's walkable from my house, and I can lift and climb there. I like setting goals to complete specific routes before they are rotated out! How I'm staying creative:Painting with watercolor markers. I love using markers, because they are so easy and practical to use for someone who doesn't have the money or space to have a full setup. All you need is a paint brush and a cup of water to use them. | | | | |
