4 well-meaning, but terrible, responses to worker trauma

It’s been a tough year, following a tough year. Whether it’s COVID, police brutality, or gerrymandering that’s keeping you down, I don’t know anyone who feels 100% when they show up at work right now.

To try to help us cope, many workplaces have handed us meditation app subscriptions and a few extra days off. But according to Vivianne Castillo—who founded a startup called HmntyCntrd to battle trauma in the workplace—these offerings can actually be part of the problem. They’re just another way that your company convinces you to suck it up and get back to work, feelings be damned.

In her new report that involved dozens of employee interviews, Castillo breaks down the four most common ways workplaces perform empathy, only to exert more capitalistic control. And while most of us would agree that some gesture can be better than no gesture, her arguments may change your view.
