Latest System Updates

In January, we released new updates to improve your experience on data.census.gov. With this release, you will now see:

  • New features to show multiple map boundaries at the same time and identify a point on the map
  • Latitude, longitude, and zoom level included in map URLs
  • Updated email: census.data@census.gov
  • Technical updates to search, data visualizations, and source statements
  • Fixes to 17 defects

The primary focus of the release is to provide more map features that data users have asked for. You will see two of these features through new 'Styles' and 'Identify' buttons at the top of all thematic maps. The 'Styles' button allows you to view boundaries for more than one type of geographic area at the same time. This helps you better reference the area you are zoomed into and select the geographies you need. The 'Identify' button allows you to click any point on the map and get a list of the specific geographies that location falls within. This list will include details for any style or boundary you have displayed on your map.

You will also notice a new feature automatically applied to your maps. Specifically, when you share a link to a map, we maintain the center point and zoom level from when you copied the link. This is made possible because we added latitude, longitude, and zoom level details to map URLs.

You will also see an updated email address: census.data@census.gov. The name of this email better reflects its purpose. Please use it to send all feedback and data questions regarding data.census.gov.

And finally, we used this release as an opportunity for technical updates. These behind-the-scenes updates allow us to provide more types of data visualizations and better source statements to you in future upgrades to our profiles.
