The gas station of the future will have treadmills, gardens, and solar panels—but no gas

The typical gas station isn't a place most people want to linger. They pull in, fill up, maybe buy a bag of chips, and drive off. But as more electric vehicles hit the road, this experience will get turned on is head. Instead of a three-minute stop for gas, an EV recharge can take 30 minutes or more. What will people do with that time?

A new design competition sought to find out. Imagining a future EV-only fueling station, the competition asked designers what these facilities could look like and how they’d serve customers with such a long waiting time. Today, the winning design has been released, and it envisions a much more leisurely service station experience, with exercise equipment, a garden, and even a place to buy some chips.

The main sponsor of the competition is Parkland, a Canadian company that runs thousands of gas stations around the world. Now, they want to get these new types of fueling stations built.
