City clinical lab to offer free services

THE current Uswag Iloilo City Molecular Laboratory in Barangay San Pedro, Molo will be converted into a clinical laboratory with the soon-to-be completion of the main facility in the area."As much as possible, we would like to make the lab works available for free for city residents," Mayor Jerry Treñas said."It is our aim to give the Ilonggos excellent and sustainable healthcare services even beyond the pandemic," he added.Some of the initial services will include diagnostic laboratory tests on urine, blood, cholesterol and even ultrasound package.The Uswag Iloilo Clinical Laboratory is targeted to operate by May this year.Acting City Health Officer Dr. Annabelle Tang said they are planning to affiliate with universities offering medical technology course so that the clinical laboratory can serve as training ground for their students.Meanwhile, the main Covid-19 molecular laboratory is more than 80 percent completed with its six dormitory rooms for the staff.The City has started its own RT-PCR testing in November 2020 duly accredited by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine of the Department of Health.As of March 12, 2022, there were 162,423 swab samples collected, with 126,296 samples tested. Stalls awarded to vendors

THE Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) awarded the first batch of 37 stalls to vendors of Iloilo Terminal Market (ITM) commonly called Super in City Proper district.Mayor Jerry Treñas hopes for more economic activities to help small businesses recover."They are bonafide stall holders who are qualified and completed the requirements according to Market Ordinance 2009-316. The stalls are verified and adjudicated by the market committee," said LEEO head Maricel Mabaquiao.ITM has 1,100 stalls. (PR)

Plazas rehab on track

THE Iloilo City Government has been implementing the rehabilitation of district plazas in a move to provide relaxing spots for residents and visitors alike."The plazas are being restored by the city because we want to make public spaces available to our constituents for free. Public spaces are very important as it gives people a place to rethink and recharge," Mayor Jerry Treñas said.More open spaces, landscaping and flood control initiatives have been incorporated to address perennial problem on flooding.Plaza Libertad in City Proper has paved way for an assembly area now being used for Monday's flag-raising ceremony and other programs organized by offices.La Paz Plaza has started constructing a retention pond to catch rainwater and prevent flooding which can be utilized for watering of plants.Jaro, Arevalo, and Molo plazas are now undergoing rehabilitation works. Mandurriao Plaza is also set to start this March.It is expected that these will be completed before the 4th quarter of 2022.City Hall has initially allocated about P190 million for major makeover of Jaro Plaza with P90 million, La Paz Plaza with P60 million, and Arevalo Plaza with P40 million.Mandurriao Plaza Redevelopment's Phase 1 is funded with some P17 million under the Green, Green, Green Program 2020 of the Department of Budget and Management.The Restoration of the Jaro Belfry, Rehabilitation of the Lopez Jaena Shrine and Jaro Plaza Bandstand, as well as Molo Plaza Redevelopment are funded and implemented by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.The improvements involve reconstruction of walkways or pathways, construction of drainage system, installation of streetlights, restoration of monuments, and installation of signages. Iloilo City accepts Covid patients in modular hospital

THE Iloilo City Modular Hospital in Sooc, Arevalo district can now admit mild to moderate cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) following the issuance of License to Operate by the Department of Health."We are finally able to operate our modular field hospital under the supervision of The Medical City-Iloilo (TMCI). In case of any surge in the future as we are now in Alert Level 1 as approved by the IATF, we are ready to take care of mild to moderate cases of Covid-19. Thank you, DOH and The Medical City," Mayor Jerry Treñas said.The facility will be open for service patients that will be referred by TMCI after assessment in their emergency room.It will only cater to Covid-19 patients to decongest hospitals and to improve the city's healthcare utilization.Treñas said it will be exclusive for city residents in the meantime, but will accommodate patients from the province of Iloilo and other areas in Panay if and when there is a surge in cases.As an extension hospital of TMCI, the health facility will likewise serve as training venue for personnel of City Health Office in preparation for the Iloilo City Hospital."We are pursuing the best possible healthcare for all Ilonggos, not just because there is a pandemic. Our health facilities and even personnel are being upgraded and capacitated for much improved services to our people," he added.Another 44-bed modular hospital also in Sooc is awaiting its License to Operate, bringing the city's total additional Covid bed capacity to 76.
