Iloilo City implements 4-day workweek scheme

MAYOR Jerry Treñas has urged Iloilo City Government employees to maximize the one-day off from work to spend time with their families.This, as Iloilo City Hall started Monday, March 28, its four-day work arrangement up to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m."This scheme will give City Hall employees more time to be with their families by having a longer weekend since we don't work on a Friday. Nothing is more important than time spent with family," he said.The initiative was in response to rising fuel prices and for the city to conserve energy.Essential services, however, continue with their five-day schedule, including: Public Safety and Transportation Management Office, City Health Office district health offices, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, General Services Office streetsweepers and field workers, City Social Welfare Development Office, and City Environment and Natural Resources Office field workers.The work scheme was suggested by the National Economic and Development Authority. Koi pond construction starts at La Paz Plaza

CONSTRUCTION works are underway for a koi pond as private partners funded parts of La Paz plaza makeover.Mayor Jerry Treñas thanked Global Business Power Corp. (GBP) for more Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives for the benefit of the Ilonggos.GBP, through its subsidiaries Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) and Panay Power Corporation (PPC), both based in La Paz, sealed a partnership with City Hall for the enhancement of portions of the two-hectare plaza, the city's largest park and among the most visited recreational places.The power firms financed P15 million for the transformation of the existing pond into a "Blue Koi Lagoon" and establishment of a "Green Butterfly Garden," a brainchild of First Lady Rosalie Treñas.The improvement of the widely renowned park is intended to promote La Paz Plaza, which is famous for sports, as a cultural and tourism spot, located within GBP's two adopted barangays, Divinagracia and Lopez Jaena Norte.GBP also turned over Dungon seedlings to aid in propagating the mangrove species within the area. This donation aims to increase the population of the tropical wetland tree, significantly contributing to the overall restoration of various waterways and rivers traversing the city.GBP, a wholly owned subsidiary of Meralco PowerGen, and member of One Meralco Group, is one in powering the good life of the Filipino through meaningful partnerships with the government that aim to make significant impact and lasting value for the community. Iloilo City library, schools get 2,000 books

AURELIO Montinola Foundation and Library Renewal Partnership donated some 2,000 books to Iloilo City Public Library (ICPL) and schools Monday, March 28.Mayor Jerry Treñas thanked A. Montinola Foundation with the help of Library Renewal Partnership founder Quintin Jose Pastrana for supporting the city's educational endeavors."They aim to help educate by giving books and conducting book drive. The Library Renewal Partnership collects books to distribute and to reach out to public libraries," said ICPL head Marion Aguirre.She added the donations were mostly children's books, references and textbooks.Other beneficiaries were Jaro National High School; A. Mabini Elementary School; Iloilo River Plains Integrated School; Study Hub at Buhang, Jaro; Sto. Niño Sur Elementary School; Pakiad Elementary School; Iloilo National High School; Department of Education; and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Male Dorm in Barangay Ungka, Jaro.They also gave e-books to be connected to recipients.The book donation was also supported by Representative Julienne Baronda and Councilor Lady Julie Grace Baronda, chairman of committee on education of City Council.It was also assisted by Philippine Librarians Association Western Visayas Regional Council.Meanwhile, the ICPL, which is located at the Dr. Graciano Lopez Jaena Learning Resource Center and Museum on Fajardo St., Jaro, announced that it has extended its services Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8p.m., without noon break.Aguirre said free Wi-Fi connection is available.She added they are also preparing a library extension at the second floor of Sta. Filomena Day Care Center in Arevalo."We encourage those who want to study or review or simply read books to visit our libraries," said Aguirre. (PR)
