| 2 BIFF leaders, 10 followers surrender in Maguindanao Posted: 30 Mar 2022 02:48 AM PDT TWO leaders and 10 followers of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) abandoned their armed struggle and returned to the folds of the law in Maguindanao, the military reported Wednesday, March 30, 2022.Lieutenant General Alfredo Rosario Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said the BIFF surrenderers were led by Anwar Pegas, a sub-leader of the BIFF-Karialan Faction, and his deputy, Zukarno Sailila.Rosario said the two and 10 of their followers voluntarily surrendered to Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Alburo, 40th Infantry Battalion (IB) commander, around 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, in Kabengi village, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao.They surrendered high-powered firearms that included the following: two M-14 rifles, two M-16 Baby Armalite rifles, a Carbine rifle, two caliber .50 Barret Sniper rifles, two 9-millimeter (mm) submachine guns, one 40-mm rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, two M-79 grenade launchers, and one 40-mm high explosive RPG ammunition.During the initial debriefing, the BIFF surrenderers said they were experiencing hardships and starvation while evading the military operations, Alburo said.He said they also realized that they were lured with false ideologies that affected themselves and their fellow Filipinos, hence, their withdrawal of support to the group.Colonel Oriel Pangcog, 601st Infantry Brigade commander, said the surrender of the group is a result of the joint efforts of the Brigade, 40IB, Maguindanao Provincial Police Office, Ampatuan Municipal Police Station, and the local government of Ampatuan, Maguindanao.Major General Juvymax Uy, commander of Joint Task Force (JTF)-Central, said the influx of BIFF surrenders manifests the continuous dwindling of the terrorist groups in Central Mindanao."We are optimistic that these groups, including the BIFF-Karialan Faction, are nearing its end," Uy said.For the first quarter of 2022, JTF-Central has reported 97 BIFFs have surrendered in its area of operation.This also yielded the recovery of 90 high-powered and low-powered firearms."We continue to gain grounds and this is attributable to the concerted efforts of the military troops, our partners, and stakeholders," Rosario said."I, personally, would like to urge those who are still hiding to cross the line. | Sibugay town cops recover smuggled cigarettes Posted: 30 Mar 2022 02:47 AM PDT POLICEMEN have recovered P30,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, a top police official said Wednesday, March 30.Police Colonel Albert Larubis, Zamboanga Sibugay police director, said the cigarettes were recovered around 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, in Bliss village, Buug.Larubis said the smuggled cigarettes were recovered following receipt of information that two motorcycle-riding persons dropped two sealed master cases of cigarettes with marking Cannon.Larubis believes the two master cases of cigarettes were dropped in the area and were supposed to be picked up by another person for delivery to its buyer.He said the smuggled cigarettes are now under the custody of Buug Municipal Police Station for proper disposition.On Sunday, March 27, policemen of Buug town arrested two people and seized a shipment of P144,000 smuggled cigarettes in Poblacion village, Buug.Larubis said he ordered all municipal police stations to intensify the campaign against smuggling of cigarettes in the province. | Ched readies for F2F classes in Zamboanga Posted: 29 Mar 2022 03:27 AM PDT A TOP official of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) announced that they are preparing for the conduct of face-to-face classes for the tertiary level in the Zamboanga Peninsula.Dr. Rody Garcia, Ched regional director, said the colleges and universities in city or provinces under Alert Level 1 are allowed to conduct 100 percent face-to-face classes per Ched Memorandum 004 series of 2022.However, only Zamboanga City is under Alert Level 1, as the other areas in the region remain under Alert Level 2 based on the latest resolution of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.Garcia said all colleges and universities must comply with the requirements before they are allowed to participate in the face-to-face classes.Garcia said the requirements include a permit from the IATF and the master list of the students who must be fully vaccinated.He said the students are also required to enroll with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.He said the parents and students have also the discretion to participate or not in face-to-face classes, or through the current modular program. | Father and son injured in bolo attack Posted: 29 Mar 2022 03:22 AM PDT TWO persons were injured in a hacking incident, while the suspect was arrested in a police follow-up operation in a west coast village of Zamboanga City.Police Colonel Alexander Lorenzo, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director, said Tuesday, March 29, that the incident happened around 9:50 a.m. Monday, March 28, in Purok 5, Labuan village.Lorenzo identified the victims as Ibraham Nasa, 29, and his father, Isnani, 58, residents of Purok 1 in Labuan village.The suspect was identified as Faizal Ammad, 38, who was arrested by the responding personnel of the ZCPO's Station 10, according to Lorenzo.He said investigation showed that Ibraham was about to get his motorcycle, which was parked at the side of the road, when the suspect, armed with a bolo, attacked the victim.He said Isnani was also hacked when he tried to pacify the suspect.He said the victims have just disembarked from their motorboat when the suspect attacked them one after the other.Both victims were rushed to Labuan General Hospital from treatment, while the suspect was arrested in a follow-up operation, Lorenzo said.
