Leyte to probe motorcycle event that leaves 1 dead, several injured Posted: 14 Mar 2022 03:58 AM PDT THE Provincial Board of Leyte is set to probe the Ormoc Adventourally Endurance Motorcycle Challenge organizers after one person reportedly died and several others were injured during the event over the weekend."[We] will call for an inquiry and investigation in aid of legislation which may make events like these safer and more enjoyable for Leyteños," Leyte Vice Governor Carlo Loreto told Sunstar Philippines.Loreto said they will tackle the issue on Friday, March 18, 2022.The organizers said the Endurance Challenge "helps to promote motorcycle tourism, also known as Motourism, in Region 8.""Participants will test their navigational skills, safety riding, and riders' discipline all over the route," said the organizers.However, videos of the event showed several participants displaying "risky riding behaviors," such as overspeeding on crowded national highways, which resulted in self accidents and reckless imprudence.In Barangay San Joaquin, Palo, Leyte alone, a 66-year-old woman died on the spot after an e-tricycle she was riding was hit by a speeding rider around 6:50 a.m. Sunday, March 13.Police identified the fatality as Maria Estelita Soliva, a resident of the said barangay.The e-tricycle driver, Anastacio Juanillo, was also rushed to a nearby hospital after he sustained injuries.Police identified the suspect as Jerom Comaling, 29, a participant of Ormoc Adventourally Endurance, and a resident of Barangay Manarug, Javier Leyte.According to the authorities, Comaling was not able to present an Official Receipt (OR) as proof of the vehicle's registration.In Leyte, Leyte, a 32-year-old rider was brought to a hospital after he sustained injuries on his left hand while traversing the national highway in the vicinity of Barangay Baco of the said town around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, March 13.Police said Rotsin Ongayo, medical representative and a resident of Barangay Luna, Ormoc City, had lost control over his driven motorcycle and swerved off the road, causing his driven motorcycle to fall to the ground.Another participant was also involved in a vehicular crash along the national road of Barangay Pawikan, in Cabucgayan, Biliran.The rider was identified as Miguel Joshuas Baclohan, 27, single, a resident of Barangay Poblacion, Kananga, Leyte.Authorities said Baclohan tried to avoid hitting a person crossing the road, but he accidentally overshot to the canal and sustained injuries on his body.Other road accidents were also reported in different towns in the province during the event."While I do not condone the bad attitude of some motorists, it is also not a reason to just blame the whole activity," wrote Ricky Bautista, a local journalist and motorcycle enthusiast."The Ormoc Adventourally Endurance Challenge was one of the most organized endurance events in the country, deploying thousands of marshalls to possibly man every corner and slippery curve spots. Policemen and local government units were also tapped to help. Let the law judge the consequence, not us, to condemn the riding community," said Bautista, one of the participants during the motorcycle event.As of Monday, March 14, the organizers have yet to issue an official statement over the incidents.
