Funding Available to Protect Coastal Communities The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is soliciting pre-proposals for the 2022 National Coastal Resilience Fund. NFWF will award up to $140 million in grants to create and restore natural systems that will increase protection for communities from coastal hazards, such as storms, sea- and lake-level changes, inundation, and coastal erosion, while improving habitats for fish and wildlife. NFWF prioritizes projects that are community led or incorporate direct community engagement and benefit underserved communities facing disproportionate harm from climate impacts. The 2022 project categories are: - Community Capacity Building and Planning
- Site Assessment and Preliminary Design
- Final Design and Permitting
- Restoration Implementation
Pre-proposals must be submitted through NFWF's Easygrants system by April 21, 2022. View the National Coastal Resilience Fund Request for Proposals for more information. Funding for New York Counties Impacted by Tropical Storm Fred Governor Kathy Hochul has announced nearly $4.4 million in federal hazard mitigation funding is available to local governments and certain non-profits in nine counties impacted by Tropical Storm Fred. Through FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, these entities can apply to receive funding to cover up to 75 percent of costs for projects that enhance resiliency and reduce the impacts of future extreme weather. Local governments and certain non-profits must be within one the following counties to be considered eligible: Allegany, Cayuga, Cortland, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga, Steuben, Tioga and Yates. The State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) will review applications and provide technical assistance to applicants upon request. The application period is open until June 1, 2022. Find more information on the DHSES hazard mitigation webpage. Reminder: Great Lakes Sediment and Nutrient Reduction Request for Proposals The Great Lakes Commission (GLC) issued a request for proposals (PDF) for the 2022 Great Lakes Sediment and Nutrient Reduction Program grant. Nonfederal units of government, tribes, and incorporated nonprofit organizations are eligible to receive grants up to $200,000. Applicants can submit proposals for activities associated with one of three project types: reducing agricultural nonpoint source pollution; reducing stormwater runoff; or stabilizing Great Lakes shoreline or streambanks. Submit applications by 5:00 p.m. on April 22, 2022. Contact GLC Program Manager Nicole Zacharda at nzacharda@glc.org or 734-396-6084 with questions. Deadline Approaches for Buffer in a Bag Program The application period for the Trees for Tribs' "Buffer in a Bag" Program is open. Qualifying private and public landowners may apply for a free bag of 25 tree and shrub seedlings for planting near streams, rivers, or lakes to help stabilize banks, protect water quality, and improve wildlife habitat. To qualify, landowners must have property in New York State with at least 50 feet bordering a stream, river, or lake, and provide photos or a map of the planting location. We encourage previous recipients to reapply to continue to build riparian buffers. DEC chooses recipients on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are due by 3 p.m. on April 11, 2022. Contact treesfortribs@dec.ny.gov with questions, and visit DEC's Trees for Tribs webpage to learn more. |
