| The other morning, I was walking home from the park before work started. I stopped, took a photo of a precious cherry blossom against the blue sky. "Amy! What is captivating you?" asked my son's tennis coach, who caught me in the act. I explained that it was just this tree, that I like to paint sometimes, and this would be a good little shot of inspiration. He went on to ask me: watercolor? Oil? Why do I do it? It's just a hobby, I said. "Therapy!" I joked. Not really a joke. I said I like to show my boys there is beauty in the world, despite, well, everything. War, atrocities, shootings, covid, death, environmental disaster. But that was too much to discuss so early in the morning when deadlines loomed, a dog needed a walk, the kitchen needed tidying. So he nodded approval and went on his way. It's true, though. In a house of go-go-go, homework, tasks, sports practice, struggles and jobs and all the grit and grime that goes with everyday life, I want my boys to see me taking a minute to paint. To find something captivating that is just for beauty's sake. Because I want them to look up from the phones in their hands and find something captivating. And I think that must start with me. So here's to a beautiful weekend, one where you can find something captivating. |
