The Nuremberg trials almost didn't happen. That a system was created to hold Nazi leaders accountable publicly for their terrible crimes after a brutal war was an unprecedented step in human history. Winston Churchill wanted to execute Nazi leaders, but the United States pushed for prosecutions — thus cementing the concept of international law for generations to come. Today, as the world witnesses the atrocities perpetrated by Russian forces under the control of Vladimir Putin, President Biden is forcefully denouncing war crimes and calling for accountability. But this time the United States is not in a position to lead an effort to uphold international law. "A glaring asterisk hangs over any calls for justice made by the United States," writes Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn). "That's because, more than two decades after its creation, we have yet to ratify the Rome Statute — the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court." She is proposing the United States joins the court once and for all to legitimize its efforts to persecute war criminals around the world and prevent abuses from happening again. "Equality under the law is one of the core tenets of our legal system and the international legal system. If we truly believe in prioritizing human rights and enforcing international law, how can we not be part of the court that upholds that law?" (Peter Dejong/AP) I will introduce a resolution to join the International Criminal Court, and I hope other members of Congress will join me.
