39 hired on the spot during Labor Day job fair Posted: 02 May 2022 07:17 AM PDT AT LEAST 39 individuals were hired on the spot during the Labor Day Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan (TNK) Job and Business Fair last April 29 and May 1, 2022 in Davao Region.Based on the latest update from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-Davao as of May 1, there were a total of 27 applicants hired on the spot (Hots) for local openings in Davao and Tagum City combined, while 12 from Panabo City on April 29.The Hots applicants were part of 1,040 qualified applicants at the Davao and Tagum City venues of the TNK Fair. They were scheduled for a face-to-face interview and screening with the employers present, but regional employment focal of DOLE-Davao Martin Ayala said not all qualified applicants have shown up for their interviews."We're expecting good numbers sana, ang presumption kasi na-shortlist na sila ng mga employers... but nasa mga 15 percent pa ang mga Hots. Ang turn out din, siguro they are not yet familiar with this method, so lahat ng mga na-text namin na shortlist, hindi lahat nakapunta pa. Nakita namin sa list na may mga ilan na wala pa (Hopefully, we will have good numbers because employers have already shortlisted some applicants but so far, only 15 percent have been hired on the spot. Maybe some are also not familiar with this method so some of those who are shortlisted have not yet made it to their interviews)," Ayala told SunStar Davao.Aside from the Hots applicants, 296 in Davao and Tagum City are near hire. Of this, 272 have qualified for local openings while 24 have qualified for overseas openings. One of the applicants at the Davao City venue, radiologic technologist Bobet Dela Cruz, has qualified for an overseas opening in Japan after his first interview."Ok daw ako sa experience kaso lack lang ako sa Japanese language. Kailangan pa nako mag schooling og three months kay July pa man daw ilang final interview so kailangan daw nako i-catch up ang schooling sa Japanese (They said I have good experience but I can't speak Japanese language. They suggested I undergo Japanese language schooling for three months before the final interview in July)," Dela Cruz said.Fatima, an applicant hoping to secure a position as an accounting staff, said she was scheduled for interviews with five employers."So far sa along gipang applyan is wala sila'y on the spot nga hire, through text lang kay i-exam pa, paghuman exam naa pa final interview (So far the companies I have applied are not hiring on the spot. They will inform via text message since the applicants still have to take an exam and final interview)," she said. Both Dela Cruz and Fatima said the application process during the TNK Job Fair was a smooth and convenient experience."So far, so good naman. Accommodating man hinoon sila and arranged man kaayo siya, dili siya gubot tanawon, naa pud naga-assist (They are accommodating and the job fair is organized and not chaotic)," Fatima said. The TNK Job and Business Fair only accommodated qualified applicants during the online pre-registration held a week before Labor Day, thus the job and business fair was dubbed as a hybrid event."There are changes sa usual na ginagawa natin na job fair, like previous years bago ang pandemic, face-to-face talaga, ngayon pre-registered ang mga andito so yung mga walk-ins ay not allowed (There are changes to the usual job fairs we do like during the previous years before the pandemic, it's usually face-to-face but now they have to go through pre-registration so walk-ins are not allowed)," Ayala said.During the job and business fair, livelihood beneficiaries of DOLE-Davao wherein they were able to display sundry goods. According to Ayala, a total of 12 livelihood beneficiaries were present at the fair.At the same time, the Department of Trade and Industry-Davao also held a lecture series on business and entrepreneurship. |
Buhangin, Talomo have most active Covid-19 cases Posted: 02 May 2022 07:15 AM PDT THE Talomo District has the most active Covid-19 cases in Davao City with a total of 10 cases as of April 30, 2022, according to Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.During her Special Hour radio program on Monday, May 2, Duterte-Carpio said Davao City currently has 31 active cases of Covid-19, majority of which were in Talomo District, followed by Buhangi District with seven cases.Duterte-Carpio said it was not surprising that Talomo and Buhangin have the most cases since they are one of the densely populated districts in the city."As expected kasi, dako og population ang Talomo nato... Buhangin as expected kay dako sad og population (That is expected because Talomo and Buhangin have huge populations)," she said.Other districts with active Covid-19 cases are Poblacion District with five cases, Bunawan District with four, Marilog District with three, and Tugbok and Toril Districts with one case each. The districts of Paquibato, Calinan, Agdao, and Baguio have zero cases."Surprising ang Agdao pero zero cases sila. Daghan tao diri (There are a lot of people in Agdao so it's surprising they recorded zero cases)," she said. The 31 cases add to the overall tally of 72,403 cases in Davao City.According to the mayor, of the 31 active cases, 23 are asymptomatic, three are critical cases, two are severe, two are mild, and one is moderate.According to Davao City Covid-19 Task Force spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser on April 29, Davao City is still at the safe positivity rate of 1.15 percent as of April 24. However, the City Government is still anticipating a surge possibly brought by the Omicron sub-variant BA2.12."Sub-variant ni siya sa Omicron, so ang iyahang features morag pud siya og Omicron, so kung unsa to nakita nato during the Omicron surge, mao pud na iyang itsura karong umaabot na surge (This is a sub-variant of Omicron so it's features or characteristic may be similar to what we have seen during the Omicron surge)," the mayor said. She added, though, that she cannot predict whether or not Davao City will ascend to Alert Level 2."Mag depende man gyod na siya kung unsa kadaghan ang cases during a surge (It will depend on how many cases we have during the surge)," Duterte-Carpio said. With these developments, the mayor reminded Dabawenyos to get the booster dose vaccine against Covid-19 before another surge arrives."Kung kita matakdan, matakdan mangyod ta (but) dili ta mahimo og severe and critical case, dili tamamatay, dili ta manginahanlan og hospitalization (It's possible to get infected but we will not become a severe or critical case, we will also avoid death and hospitalization)," she said. |
IPMR rep: Rampant buying, selling of ancestral lands in Marilog Posted: 02 May 2022 07:14 AM PDT DATU Rody Mande, Indigenous Peoples Mandatory representative (IPMR) of the City Council of Davao, observed that there is rampant buying and selling of ancestral domains in Davao City, particularly in Marilog District.During the Kapehan on May 2, 2022 at SM City Davao, Mande said there are already indigenous peoples in the lowlands that have been displaced due to the selling of ancestral domains."Usa kini sa mga medyo hagit karun sa akong paglingkod sa Davao City, kung paano sya ma-stop, dako ni nga problema kay daghang tao mabanggaan especially taga city kay daghan na og nanaka na didto (This is one of the uphill challenges as a councilor (IPMR) of Davao City, on how to stop this and it is a big problem because there are lot of people who may not agree or is against of the plans that we are going to make since there are already occupants from the city)," Mande said.Mande urged the Ancestral Domain Management Office (Admo), which is composed of Indigenous Political Structure (IPS) of selected tribal leaders, not to deal with the buyers to eradicate the issue of selling ancestral domains."Naa gud man dealer, so kana pud ang among problema tungod siguro kay dili anad og kwarta ang tribo so pag-abot sa kwarta mabaliskad ang pang isip (The dealers are also a problem. The tribal leaders are not used to dealing with transactions with money, and when they encounter such, it could affect how they decide on such matters)," Mande added.Mande also said that seven leaders have been killed due to buying and selling of ancestral domains."Ang subo lang karun, until now, wala gihapon hustisya, walay laing ground kung dili naay makapalit, naka men in uniform pa ang ubang nakapalit, nga syempre malain nga nganong gibaligyaan pero dili man diay iyaha to, so kung kinsa pa ang dili malain nga million gud (It is so sad that until now justice have not been served, there's no other grounds for this but the buying and selling (of ancestral domain), there are buyers who are even men-in-uniform that we've been offended because they have bought land that is not even their (sellers) own, costing millions)," he said. The councilor plans to gather all the tribal leaders to address the issue on the buying and selling of ancestral lands. The Indigenous Peoples have the right to their ancestral domains according to Republic Act 8371, an act to recognize, protect and promote the rights of indigenous cultural communities/indigenous people, creating a national commission of indigenous people, establishing implementing mechanisms, appropriating funds therefor, and for other purposes. |
Mayor: Davao City 4th district did not gain support in Congress Posted: 02 May 2022 07:12 AM PDT VICE presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio revealed that the proposed fourth congressional district in the city failed to gained support at the House of Representatives."I tried that during my term, but wala siya nag-gain og support sa mga members (it did not gain support among members) of the House of Representatives," Duterte-Carpio said on Monday, May 2, in her regular interview streamed live on her official Facebook page. The proposal for a fourth congressional district was opened to the 19th City Council by Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang in 2019.His initial proposal, though, was to add three more districts, from the current three district set-up.Dayanghirang, in a previous report, said the city is qualified for an additional district based on Section 5, Article VI of the 1987 Philippine Constitution.Under the law, "Congress shall make a reapportion of legislative districts based on the standards fixed in this selection."One of the provisions of the law states that a legislative district must have a minimum population of 250,000.According to the 2020 census of population and house of the Philippine Statistics Authority, Davao City's population already reached more than 1.7 million.Dayanghirang said the proposal, which was recommended by the City Planning Development Office, aims to effectively deliver the programs and services of the local government. But Duterte-Carpio said in a previous interview that the City Planning Development Office (CPDO), on its study, has recommended pushing for only one congressional district for the meantime due to inadequate fund sourcing.Meanwhile, the mayor said in her recent interview that adding another district in the city should be discussed by the local government and the members of the House of Representatives."So wala nako ana (I'm hands off on that matter)," she said. She said the next administration should plan how it can spread the city's resources and budget to various officies which can be utilized among Dabawenyos."What we'll try next time is make do kung kinsa naa diha nga mga (who will be the elected) Congressman and plan kung paunsa nato mabuhat ang (how we can create) collaboration para ma-spread nato ang (so we can spread) resources and budget sa kanya-kanyang mga (among various) offices para makatabang sa mga (to help) Dabawenyo," Duterte-Carpio said. She said she has not yet fully discussed the matter among officials. The proposed additional district had received mixed reviews, including from candidates for the first district.Businessman Jamal Kanan said in a radio interview that adding another district in the city would just be an additional cost for the City Government. For Maria Victoria Maglana, she questioned the need for an additional district, adding that it is uncertain how a fourth district would address problems. She said adding another district would only address the political rivalries in the city for them to be given an area wherein they can run for elections. |
Duterte-Carpio says goodbye to local politics Posted: 02 May 2022 06:55 AM PDT REGARDLESS of the results of the May 9 elections, Davao City Mayor and vice presidential candidate Sara Duterte-Carpio said on Sunday, May 1, that she will no longer return to local politics. In a speech during the Dumper PTDA (Drivers United for Mass Progress and Equal Rights–Philippines Taxi Drivers Association) partylist on Labor Day at the Davao Crocodile Park grounds, Duterte-Carpio thanked her constituents during her nine non-consecutive runs as city mayor."Mga Dabawenyo, manamilit nako kaninyo kay dili nako makabalik o dili nako mubalik sa local government nga pagdagan nga position. Bisan unsay mahitabo karong May 9, 2022, gusto kong mahibaw mong tanan na (To all the Dabawenyos, I will be saying my goodbyes as I will no longer return in running for the local position. Regardless of what will happen on May 9, 2022, I want everyone to know that) it has been a great honor to have been chosen by all of you as mayor of Davao City," Duterte-Carpio said a week before the national polls. She recalled the challenges she encountered in her stint as local chief executive of the city, including the Roxas Night Market that left 17 people dead and 74 injured, and the Covid-19 pandemic."Daghan kaayo kog ikapasalamat kay dili tanang mayor, gitagaan og ing-ana nga suporta sa ilang mga kauban (I have so many things to be thankful for because not all mayors are given the same amount of support from their constituents). It was a pleasure to have made memories with all of you mga (fellow) Dabawenyos, and it is indeed my pride again to make history with all of you," she said.Duterte-Carpio, who was first elected as mayor from 2010 to 2013 and in 2016 up to the present, made history as the youngest mayor and the first lady to be elected mayor in the city. The crowd, in the middle of her speech, chanted "daog na (sure win)."To which, she responded, "Basta muingon ang syudad sa Davao ug ang Mindanao nga mudaog ko, kusog ang akoang kumpyansa nga mudaog ko (When Davao City and Mindanao will say that I will surely win, I am confident that I will surely win)."Meanwhile, Duterte-Carpio reiterated her support for her UniTeam running mate former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., of which she lauded the latter's political experience. The mayor also vowed to continue the anti-criminality and infrastructure projects of her father, outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte."Ang amoang pamilya, dunay dako kaayo nga utang nga kabubut-on sa inyong tanan sa paghigugma ug suporta na ginahatag ninyo kanamo (My family is in debt to all of your love and support that you bestowed upon us)," she said. The mayor had already formally bid farewell to the Dabawenyos in her State of the City Address in March this year as she campaigns for the second-highest position in the country. She described the vice-presidential race as a challenge that allows her to spread her wings wider, "soar higher, and reach new heights." |
Lawmaker: Enchong Dee’s words hurt Posted: 02 May 2022 06:55 AM PDT REPRESENTATIVE Claudine Diana Bautista-Lim of Dumper PTDA (Drivers United for Mass Progress and Equal Rights–Philippines Taxi Drivers Association) partylist said she was hurt by the accusation of actor Enchong Dee that she did nothing in her stint at the House of Representatives.Bautista-Lim, during the grand rally organized by her party on Labor Day Sunday evening, May 1, highlighted some of her party's accomplishments during their three-year stint in Congress.During the Covid-19 response, she said Dumper had provided financial and other assistance to the drivers of the public sector who were affected by the pandemic. She added that they had initiated a free vaccination rollout to the transport sector. She said her party had 10,000 scholars in the Davao Region. The Dumper Party candidate, meanwhile, highlighted some of the assistance she provided in the city in terms of livelihood and infrastructure. The lawmaker said her party had enacted 101 bills, of which seven were already signed by President Rodrigo Duterte. She added that her party had allocated a budget for the construction of the Mental Wellness Center for Homeless and the City Library in Davao City."Mao nang magsakit gyud ang akong buot nga ingnon lang ko ni Enchong nga wala koy gibuhat (That is why I was hurt with the accusation of Enchong that I did nothing in my position)," Bautista-Lim said. She said the actor reached out to her after the latter criticized her wedding in 2021 with her husband, Jose French "Tracker" Lim, a businessman and the party's second nominee for the party."Niingon baya gyud si Enchong nga buhaton daw niya maski unsa, akoa lang siya pasayluon (Enchong had said that he would do anything just for me to forgive him)," she said while asking the crowd, in jest, that she would let the actor dance on stage in return. She, later on, shifted the topic and asked for the crowd's support in their bid for reelection in the upcoming polls. The wedding drew criticisms from netizens after Dubai-based fashion designer Michael Cinco posted a photograph of the wedding gown on social media.Bautista-Lim filed a cyberlibel complaint against several personalities, including Dee, who posted "malicious" and "defamatory" statements against her via social media in November 2021 following her wedding.Dee posted on his Twitter account, saying: "The money for commuters and drivers went to her wedding. Let's not prolong this conversation and don't say otherwise."On January 31, this year, the actor surrendered to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and posted P48,000 as bail.Bautista-Lim, meanwhile, belied claims that the expenses of her wedding, including the gown, were sourced from government funds. She added that all of it was shouldered by her husband."Muingon sila, si Enchong, nga akoang kwarta daw gigasto sa kasal, gikuha daw sa pondo sa gobyerno. Unsaon man nato na nga ang lalaki may mubayad sa kasal... ang akong bana, pwede gyud mubayad sa among kasal (Enchong said that I was the one who shouldered the wedding's expenses, which I allegedly took from the government funding. How can that be when my husband shouldered everything... he is capable of shouldering it)," she said, adding that her husband is capable of shouldering their wedding expenses. |

Editorial: A new leadership in less than a week Posted: 02 May 2022 06:46 AM PDT IT SEEMS like it is still a month away but the national elections are now just less than a week away.In less than a week, the Filipinos will be choosing a new president who will lead the country for the next six years. In the last six months, we have heard the candidates for the top two highest positions in the country what their plans are once elected. All of them have made the same promise of stopping corruption within the country, which we hope will truly happen.A week prior to the elections, former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio, continue to top the election surveys for the two highest posts.Based on the April 16-22, 2022 survey of Pulse Asia Research Inc., Marcos continues to lead the presidential survey with 56 percent of respondents saying they will vote for him. Vice President Leni Robredo came in second with 23 percent, followed by Senator Manny Pacquiao (7%), Manila Mayor Isko Moreno (4%), and Senator Ping Lacson (2%).Ernie Abella and Faisal Mangondato each had 1 percent while Leody de Guzman, Norberto Gonzales, and Jose Montemayor Jr. were below the 1 percent mark."This nationwide survey is based on a sample of 2,400 representative adults 18 years old and above, who are registered voters and likely to vote in the May 2022 elections. It has a ± 2% error margin at the 95% confidence level. Subnational estimates for each of the geographic areas covered in the survey (i.e., Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao) have a ± 4% error margin, also at 95% confidence level," Pulse Asia said in a statement on May 2, 2022.Similarly, Duterte-Carpio also continues to top the vice presidential survey with 55 percent of respondents saying they will be voting for her. She is followed by Senator Tito Sotto (18%), Senator Kiko Pangilinan (16%), Doctor Willie Ong (3%), and Manny Lopez (1%).However, as we said, this is just a possible result of the upcoming elections. It can come out this way or it could surprise us.Nonetheless, whatever the possible results may be or whatever the survey results are showing now, it is important for registered voters to go and practice their right to vote.It is also important for you to be ready for the upcoming election day. Make sure you know your precinct. You can check it at https://voterverifier.comelec.gov.ph/voter_precinct. You may also bring a list of the people you will vote for come election day.Another preparation you must make is to know who you are voting for. For the undecided, there is still time for you to go through a candidate's credentials and stance on certain issues. Each vote you make counts. Each vote you make will dictate the course of our country in the next six years. For 2022, let your vote count as you practice your right to choose a leader. |
Tears and joy after circumcision Posted: 02 May 2022 06:44 AM PDT WHILE there was the joy of finally seeing my son circumcised last week, the agony of hearing my son in pain predominated. Initially, I was amazed when I saw many kids waiting for their turn with their parents. We arrived as early as 7:30 a.m. at the "Operation Tuli" site, but it seemed that we were already late. The doctors, volunteers, and local barangay team were already busy weighing the kids and doing the necessary documentation before the actual circumcision.Although there was a crowd, I saw all people wearing their masks. As names were called, I would always look at my son "Macoy" and hug him, but I could feel that he was uncomfortable that people might see, as he is already a grown-up. His father would always remind him, "matapang tayo ha, walang iiyak." In turn, I almost cry every time I hear my husband say those words. It makes me more anxious when I hear little boys crying, but I can listen to the doctors' calming voice that lessens the boys' anxieties. I can also hear parents' voices sounding some in fear, worry, and others in excitement. I had mixed emotions by then; it was as if I would be the one to be circumcised. When it was the turn of "Marco", God, I have called all the angels and Saints. And lucky that it was Dr. Abe Jun Versoza who circumcised my big boy. Oh, my eldest daughter and husband watched the procedure, but I remained sitting and, like my soul, flew in fear that my son would be in deep pain. I heard him cry a little, but Dr. Abe was careful and gentle. What a relief! Indeed, I felt that my son was in good hands. And because we came late, it was like "Macoy" was one of those last to be served, like almost 12 noon. But when I was looking at the volunteer doctors and the operation "tuli" team, I knew that they were all exhausted. Still, the smiles on their faces and willingness to serve were there. Never did I see an uncompassionate doctor and uncaring volunteers. Instead, I truly felt their caring attitudes and I saw happy clients. So, I took the chance to have a quick talk with Dr. Versoza, as my husband and "Macoy" went ahead to get the free antibiotic and pain reliever near the exit gate. Wow, everything is free! Glad to hear that the "Summer Operation Tuli 2022" conducted at the Alterado General Hospital Inc. is with the collaboration of the City Health Office, local barangays, and the Freemasons of Masonic District R11-A Davao City.It also includes the Agila Shriners International, Davao Masonic Center Foundation Inc., Masonic Lodges of the District, Appendant Bodies, Order of the Eastern Star, Order of the Amaranth, Southern Philippines Medical Center-Department of Emergency Medicine, Department of Surgery, Department of Urology, Davao Doctors Hospital, Mindanao Medical Foundation College, San Pedro Hospital Students, Operating room Nurses Association of the Philippines-Davao Chapter, and Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association.Lucky are we and all those served last April 24, 2022. I know that "circumcision" will not be easy for some boys, but you will see the smile on their faces after battling fear and anxiety when it is done.Ahh, to the 137 boys circumcised, welcome to manhood. There might be tears at the beginning of the procedure, but there is indeed joy after. A once-in-a-lifetime experience. |
Wildlife photog hopes new P1,000 bill will aid to conserve PH eagle Posted: 02 May 2022 06:41 AM PDT FLOYD Bermejo, the wildlife photographer who captured the Philippine Eagle image used in the new 1,000-piso polymer banknote, hopes his photo will inspire action to save the Philippine Eagle from extinction."Gusto kong mai-save natin iyong Philippine Eagle," said Bermejo, whose portraits evoke a sense of gentleness in the formidable creature and pride in their beauty. The Philippine Eagle, one of the rarest eagles in the world, is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with an estimate of only 400 breeding pairs left in the wild.It is also one of the world's most powerful birds of prey and is native to the Philippines, making it a source of national pride and identity.Bermejo believes that featuring the country's national bird on Philippine currency will foster greater awareness for its conservation, especially since it is endemic to Philippine forests.Bermejo is an avid birdwatcher and member of the Robert S. Kennedy Bird Conservancy, a group dedicated to protecting the country's birds through documentation. He explained that his passion for photography was rooted in childhood memories of hunting birds for food with his father in the mountains of Sipalay, Negros Occidental."Nagustuhan ko iyong wildlife photography kasi parang naghu-hunt ka rin. Pero this time, you are using your camera," said the bird hunter-turned-conservationist.At first, he took and collected photos to relieve stress. But through his immersion in communities that served as habitats of endangered birds, his collections transformed into a powerful platform for his conservation advocacies. His passion as a lensman and his work as a pilot have allowed him to visit many protected forests and wildlife sanctuaries, including the one in Davao where he took the iconic photo of the Philippine Eagle featured on the polymer banknote. To celebrate the diversity of the country's flora and fauna, the new 1000-piso polymer banknote highlights the Philippine Eagle, the country's national bird, which exemplifies the Filipinos' strength and love for freedom as well as the BSP's independence and clear vision to help achieve a stronger and more inclusive economy. The banknote's design also features the Sampaguita, which symbolizes purity, fidelity, and hope. The Office of the President and the BSP Monetary Board approved the issuance of the new polymer banknote, which the BSP has released in phases, starting April 2022.
