Cacao industry leaders want local chocos to go ‘mainstream’

Posted: 06 Jul 2022 07:54 PM PDT

CACAO industry leaders in Davao want to make local chocolate consumption mainstream for Dabawenyos. During the Wednesdays Media Forum on July 6, cacao industry leaders namely Cacao Council Chair for Davao Region Toto Muyco, Chairperson of the Davao City Cacao Industry Council Charita Puentespina, and Vice President of Cacao City Marketing Cooperative and member of Davao City Cacao Council Wit Holganza shared the same sentiment to bring cacao products a part of the Dabawenyo lifestyle. Holganza said that Dabawenyos have low consumption of local cacao products from Davao despite being the Cacao and Chocolate Capital of the Philippines. She added that people are more used to consuming "fast food" chocolates from mainstream brands because many are not aware of Davao-made cacao products. "We find more varieties of these fast food chocolates in our groceries... Other brands like Malagos, because they've been here quite a while, you will find in groceries and supermarkets but a lot of the smaller brands have not yet penetrated. It is precisely why one of the objectives of our cacao and chocolate events is to push for Dabawenyos to become more familiar," Holganza said. The industry leaders said some of the ways to change this is through strong promotion and campaigns to make cacao synonymous with a healthy lifestyle and come up with innovative ways to incorporate it into the daily routine. "We should make a robust campaign regarding the nutritional value of our cacao. Not unlike the other concoctions that have extenders... what we have in Davao is purely the beans, it has all the nutritional value. It has been studied and researched," Puentespina said. In addition, Muyco said the private sector should rally for the use and promotion of cacao, as well as penetrate into the mainstream market. "We have to rally the local and national government that they would also push a bit the private sector to use local cacao and I think with that partnership with the government and private sector, we can really increase the consumption for the local market," he said. The industry leaders said they are currently focusing on promoting Davao cacao products to raise awareness among Dabawenyos about the local commodity. Events and exhibits, such as the upcoming World Chocolate Day Celebration, boost promotion. The Chocolate Fair in celebration of World Chocolate Day will be on July 7, 2022 at Ayala Abreeza Mall in Davao City. ICM

Minbizcon 2022 goes face-to-face after 2 years

Posted: 06 Jul 2022 07:50 PM PDT

THE 2022 Mindanao Business Conference (MinBizCon) will be held face-to-face (F2F) for the first time in two years since the Covid-19 pandemic, said Area Vice President for Mindanao of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Arturo Milan on July 7. During the Wednesdays at Habi at Kape press conference, Milan said the 31st MinBizCon will be held F2F at Tandag City in Surigao del Sur from August 31 to September 2, 2022. He added that this is the second MinBizCon to be held in the Caraga region. Approximately 600 to 1,000 individuals from 32 different local government units in Mindanao and other guests are expected to participate in the conference. "We have a dozen of resolutions that we will be presenting for Mindanao," Milan said, which include strengthening support for Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) programs, connectivity of Mindanao via airports and seaports, and enhancing the educational system like opening post-graduate studies to foreign universities to come to Mindanao, among others. The previous MinBizCon in 2020 and 2021 was held virtually since the strict Covid-19 restrictions at the time prevented traveling and F2F gatherings. "Even if we will have F2F, we will exercise safety and health protocols. We will be encouraging the wearing of masks and physical distancing as well," Milan said. ICM

WHETHER it be dark and bitter or smooth and sweet, a lot of people love chocolates. Beyond being a sweet treat, chocolates are quite versatile from being used to cook savory dishes to being used as a spa treatment. Today, we celebrate the wholesomeness of the chocolate as we observe World Chocolate Day, also known as International Chocolate Day. Being celebrated around the world every July 7, some say the date is the anniversary of when the chocolate was introduced to Europe in 1550. Proudly Davao brand Malagos Garden Resort celebrates with Dabawenyos and the rest of the world this special day. The award-winning brand is known for its chocolates made from single-origin cacao beans grown from its farms in the foothills of Mt. Talomo, Davao, Philippines. The Mindanawon brand harvests cacao from carefully nurtured trees. Being of single-origin, the chocolates produced using cacao have a more distinctive and pronounced taste. To mark World Chocolate Day, Malagos Garden Resort has created a menu infused with the award-winning Malagos Chocolate. First is a Malagos-take on the classic chocolate cake -- Tableya Cake. Compared to the regular chocolate cake, the tableya cake has a deeper chocolate flavor with some toasty, nutty, earthy hints. It is a dessert that will satisfy a sweet-toothed person at the end of their meal. Next is the Heirloom Chocolate Limited Edition 72% Dark. Using heirloom cacao, this chocolate is dedicated to Malagos farmers who helped cultivate and produce one of the best cacaos in the world. The limited-edition chocolate bar uses heirloom cacao, which is considered the "diamond of cacao." The trees and beans are considered heirloom varieties because of a combination of their historic, cultural, botanical, geographical, and flavor values. If you want to really make your World Chocolate Day truly special, Malagos Garden Resort is offering its Chocolate Bloom Staycation Promo for the whole month of July. The package includes room accommodation, chocolate making, a complimentary chocolate basket, breakfast, and access to resort attractions. Aside from this, you can also enjoy pampering yourself in their chocolate spa and having a piece of their decadent Malagos Tableya Cake. Posted: 06 Jul 2022 07:35 PM PDT

TWO SunStar Davao journalists were selected to participate in an international leadership training organized by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and Temasek Foundation. SunStar Davao Digital Services Head Ace June Rell S. Perez and multi-media reporter Ralph Lawrence G. Llemit are among the 27 fellows of the 2022 Young Media Leaders Fellowship (YMLF). The fellows were nominated by their peers and editors. "The future of journalism is in the hands of the young and upcoming journalists. The Young Media Leaders Fellowship will sharpen their journalistic and management skills," Esther Ng, WEF Asia Chair and Chief of Content, Star Media Group, said in a statement on June 27, 2022. SunStar Davao is the lone community newspaper in the international fellowship. Perez started as a reporter with SunStar Davao in 2015 covering business stories. In 2017, he was promoted to social media strategist. He spearheaded the digital initiatives of SunStar Davao. In 2022, he was promoted to Digital Services Head as the newspaper expanded its digital initiatives. Llemit entered SunStar Davao in 2019 as a reporter, being assigned to the city hall and general beats. In 2022, he was promoted to multimedia reporter. While he covers stories, he also supports Perez in the newspaper's digital initiatives. The fellowship started on June 27, 2022. Online masterclasses were held on June 27 to 29 and July 4 and 5. It will culminate "with an in-person Fellowship Finale at WAN-IFRA's Digital Media Asia in November 2022." "They will gather online and in-person over the next six months to share experiences, exchange ideas, amplify the impact of their news reporting, and learn to lead in an industry transformed by technology," WAN-IFRA said in a statement on June 27, 2022. SunStar Davao Editor-in-chief Reuel John F. Lumawag said the fellowship will allow SunStar Davao team members to take on bigger leadership roles in the future. "It is important to enable and empower younger team members to be able to take bigger responsibilities in the future. The YMLF will allow Perez and Llemit to learn leadership skills and principles in the media industry while navigating the digital environment," Lumawag said. After the first set of master classes, Perez said this would help young media leaders to come up with sound decisions in guiding our team in navigating the changing media landscape. "Some of the key takeaways from the sessions are how to be a more self-aware leader; the importance of getting all players involved in newsroom innovations; and new initiatives on how to stay relevant in serving the community better through responsible journalism," Perez said. Llemit said the fellowship is a rare opportunity for media practitioners. "The five-day session gave me tons of insights on various newsroom cultures and practices outside the Philippines. The event also served as an eye-opener on how the industry landscape has evolved throughout the years, and what needs to be done to brace for more changes in the years to come," Llemit said. He added that the sessions also gave him "a deeper understanding of how anyone can be a leader, not only in their respective newsrooms but in their other daily lives." Other fellows are "high-potential mid-career editors and journalists from 21 publications in nine countries." Also from the Philippines are Ellalyn de Vera Ruiz, Content Producer/Senior Reporter, Manila Bulletin; Martin Sadongdong, Content Producer/Reporter, Manila Bulletin; and Robert Jaworski Abano, Associate Editor for Regions, Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Family, friends call ‘Justice for Amier’

Posted: 05 Jul 2022 12:01 PM PDT

THE family and friends of the Grade 9 student, who was shot by a doctor non-uniformed personnel of the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Davao on Saturday dawn, July 2, is seeking justice for his death. A Facebook page entitled "Justice for Amier Mangacop" was created days after the incident. In an online chat, the page administrator confirmed to SunStar Davao that the page was created as an avenue for "the official statement of the family, friends, and supporters" to call for justice for Mangacop's death. In the post, the camp clarified that the victim was 19, contrary to earlier news reports that he was 21. Mangacop, according to the post, was shot seven times outside a bar by the PRO non-uniformed staff. In an official statement by the family and friends, Mangacop and his cousins were just sleeping at their aunt's house in Davao City when one of the cousins called and requested to be fetched at the bar along the corner of Tavera and V. Mapa streets. "Being a good and loving cousin that he was, he immediately complied. Woke up his cousins then they all went to the mentioned bar, not knowing what fate awaited him there," the statement read. They also belied reports that Mangacop and his companions "were all drunk or high." According to the group, there was already an ongoing commotion at the bar involving other people when Mangacop arrived. The shooter, according to them, was "intoxicated" when he shot the victim. "So even if Amier was not there that night; someone might have still been killed—it could be someone else's cousin, son, or worse seven people might have been shot by the seven bullets fired. We all know that guns and liquor are a deadly combination," the statement read. Questions raised The camp of Mangacop raised some questions on why the incident happened and how it could have been prevented. They raised how the shooter was allowed inside the bar considering there is a directive issued by former president Rodrigo Duterte in January 2019, which was issued by then Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año, ordering the Philippine National Police through an Administrative Circular, banning police personnel from drinking in bars, nightclubs, and in other public places. They also raised the question of whether gun owners are allowed to bring their firearms in public areas such as bars and other drinking places. "Are gun owners allowed to just bring their guns anywhere and everywhere, especially in bars, nightclubs, and other public drinking places? Or our Bars slowly becoming like the schools of America?" the camp said. In relation, they also questioned the bar's security protocol. 'Kind, obedient, loving son' The family and friends described Mangacop as a "kind, obedient and a loving son," with no vices. "[H]e disliked to drink liquor and hated the smell of cigarette smoke," they said. The victim was second among six children. "He had many beautiful dreams for himself and his family. He loved to tinker and repair cars and dreamt that one day he would be able to build his own car detailing and repair shop. But that dream will remain a dream... forever," the camp said. SunStar Davao is still reaching out to Davao City Police Office (DCPO) for their reaction. However, DCPO Director Alberto Lupaz said in a press conference on Monday, July 4, that there is no special treatment in the case. "We are doing everything na talagang fair at nagkuha tayo ng abogado para doon (to be fair, and we really hired a lawyer for this)," Lupaz said. RGL

No city council committee given to Coun. Abellera

Posted: 05 Jul 2022 11:58 AM PDT

DAVAO City First District Councilor Nilo "Small" Abellera, Jr. will be serving the 20th City Council without any committee. The 20th Council had its first regular session on Tuesday morning, July 5 where the names of the heads of various committees were revealed. In an ambush interview, Abellera admitted he was surprised at how he did not get a single membership in the committees. "Wala ko kabalo sa rason. Siguro ang tamang pangutan-on ana ang leadership. Ako personally, kinsa mang konsehal gud ang dili [gusto] nga naa siya'y komitiba (I don't know the reason. Maybe, you can ask the leadership, Personally, I don't think any councilor would not want to serve without being a part of a committee)," the councilor said. "I also want to know some answers. Sa ngayon, hindi ko kayang sagutin ng diretso ang katanungan ninyo kasi pati ako hindi ko rin alam (As of now, I cannot answer your questions directly because I, myself, don't know the reason)," he also said. He also said he will raise his concern with the council leadership. Despite this, Abellera said he will continue to push ordinances for the welfare of the public. Vice Mayor J. Melchor Quitain Jr. said the committee chairmanship is based on the nomination process. Quitain, meanwhile, stressed that having no single committee membership doesn't make a councilor "ineffective." "Diri sa (Here in the) body, when we decide, dili man commiittee ang muboto (it's not the committee who will decide), [it's] everybody. Even those with no committees or no membership will still have that right to vote," the vice mayor said, adding "his voice will still have a say in everything." Prior to the interview, Abellera approached Quitain, however, the latter clarified that the former did not raise his concerns regarding the matter. City Council Committee Jesus Joseph Zozobrado was elected as Floor Leader, while Edgar Ibuyan Jr. and Louie John Bonguyan retained their respective positions as President Pro-tempore and Assistant Floor Leader The new councilors were also elected to chair different standing committees: Trisha Ann Villafuerte for women, children, and family relations; Luna Acosta for peace and public safety; Tek Ocampo for special publications, and environment and natural resources; Bonz Militar for information technology; and Enzo Villafuerte for civil, political and human rights. Re-elected councilors were also elected in their respective committees: Zozobrado for the committee on rules, privileges, laws and ordinances; Ibuyan, Jr. for public works and highways; Bonguyan for medium-end projects, and energy and water; Bernie Al-ag for trade, commerce, and industry, and labor and employment opportunities; Conrado Baluran for transportation and communications; Jaffar Marohomsalic for youth and sports; Mahipus for oversight committee, and ethics and good governance; Javi Campos for international relations, and low-end projects (sociaalized housing); Wilberto Al-ag for social services, and agriculture and food; Al Ryan Alejandre for tourism and beautification; Jessica Bonguyan for games and amusement; Edgar Ibuyan Sr. for barangay affairs, and government enterprise and privatization; Cheche Justol for health; Bai Sweet Advincula for high-end projects; Rodolfo Mande for people, cultural communities and Muslim affairs; Pilar Braga for education, science and technology, arts and culture; Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz for finance, ways and means and appropriations; Dante Apostol for franchises and public utilities; Alberto Ungab for appointments and government reorganization, and city-owned properties; and Jonard Dayap for cooperative development and people's participation. A new committee was also created: the People's Law Enforcement Board (PLEB) headed by Acosta for first district, Mahipus for second district, and Advincula for third district; disaster risk reduction and management --- still headed by Mahipus; and future generation --- headed by Dayap; anti-terrorism --- headed by Ibuyan Jr. RGL

Vax for Covid-19 in health centers will not be daily

Posted: 05 Jul 2022 11:56 AM PDT

VACCINATION hubs in the district health centers will not be open every day to accommodate other health programs, said Task Force Covid-19 Vaccination Cluster. "Dili nato ni sya mahimo na everyday sa main health center kay daghan man tag programa sa Monday-Friday, so ang mahitabo ana they will have to choose one day kung asa sila pwede magbakuna for Covid[19], however the remaining days of the week, moadto gyud sila sa barangay ngadto na sila mag-vaccinate pud (We can't do this every day in the main health center because we have other programs scheduled from Monday to Friday. So, what will happen is that they need to set a day when they can hold the vaccination for Covid[19]... for the remaining days they will be immersed in the barangays to vaccinate)," Task Force Covid-19 Vaccination Cluster Head Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said in an interview with the Davao City Disaster Risk Radio on July 5, 2022. Villafuerte said for example, Wednesday is intended for the children's health care program and Monday is for prenatal. Villafuerte said the assigned person who will conduct the vaccination will only cater to another barangay once they have reached their target vaccinated individuals. "So let's say kung naa kay 500 nga target, dili lang nato na siya mahimo sa one day pwede sila mag-extend sa isang barangay hanggang matapos talaga nila, then lipat na naman sa ibang barangay (if you have 500 target individuals to be vaccinated, you can extend your stay in that particular barangay to reach your target that's the only time that they will be able to cater the next barangay)," Villafuerte said. Although a barangay or district already achieved a 70 percent vaccination rate, Villafuerte said they will still trace the unvaccinated individuals. "Naa man gud barangay nga naay percentage coverage of 68 percent pero pagtan-aw diay namo ang coverage naa pa diay 4,000 nabilin so medyo malaki (There was a barangay that has a 68 percent coverage but after checking, they still have 4,000 unvaccinated individuals. That's still big)," Villafuerte said. KSD
