Happy New Year, everyone. The calendar suggests today is a pivot of importance, even if we all know that's not quite right. Jan. 1 is just another morning in most respects, and yet represents for so many a welcome new beginning. Here at Post Opinions, we think that's worth celebrating and so we've decided to start 2023 on a hopeful note — specifically, 15 reasons to be optimistic about the new year, straight from some of our writers and cartoonists. Our collection begins with columnist Michele Norris — and an incandescent moment she shares from an event in D.C. a few months back — and finishes with some brief words from deputy opinion editor David Von Drehle, who reminds us, "Hope is a choice, strengthened through practice; not a reflection of light, but light itself." That's wisdom at any time of the year. Thanks for reading. And let us know what you think. From books to batteries to Ketanji Brown Jackson, there's reason to be hopeful.
