She knew that I had written about being a Catholic, and wondered whether I was aware that Pope Francis had recently appointed a new bishop to the Washington archdiocese who had an usual background: He had come to this country as an undocumented immigrant. She noted that she hadn't been able to find much about him beyond an article that had appeared in the Catholic press and wrote: "Given the intractable politics around immigration reform, I thought his story deserved to be highlighted in a national newspaper." What a story it turned out to be. The life of Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala has indeed been a fascinating personal journey (part of which took place in the trunk of a car). It is a reminder of the many contributions that immigrants have made to the fabric of American life. This remarkable man is also an exemplar of how the Catholic Church has begun to change in the decade since Francis ascended to the throne of Saint Peter. I hope you find it as compelling as I did.
