(Marvin Joseph/The Washington Post) | - Recovery effort: Authorities and residents continue to clear roads, fix downed power lines and remove fallen tree limbs after Saturday's storm, the most violent of the year. Police in Virginia investigated a suspected storm-related death.
- How it happened: The storms, which cut power to more than 200,000 customers, were sparked by extreme heat and humidity, a strong cold front, and a vigorous disturbance high in the atmosphere.
| | |  | D.C. council members don't agree about building a new stadium at the RFK site. | - What to know: Of the 11 of 13 members who answered questions from The Post, five expressed some level of openness to building a stadium. Three were clearly opposed or leaned in opposition. The rest offered vague or noncommittal answers, or didn't respond.
- Why it matters: Bipartisan legislation was introduced in Congress last week that would allow several development possibilities, including a new home for the Washington Commanders.
| | |  | D.C. Public Schools slashed its tech budget ahead of the new school year. | - By how much? $9 million. Plans to replace aging laptops used by students since the start of the pandemic will be scrapped.
- Why? School officials blamed the D.C. Council, which cut $20 million from the current budget. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, however, said the school system can move money from elsewhere for new devices.
| | | | | | |  | A man who assaulted an officer during the Capitol riot was sentenced. | - Who? Thomas Sibick was sentenced to 50 months in prison Friday for the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on D.C. police officer Michael Fanone. He stole Fanone's radio and badge as part of the mob that formed on the Capitol's West Terrace.
- Sibick offered multiple explanations for his actions, such as saying he was experiencing a psychiatric episode. Fanone called him a "coward and a liar."

- A debate last week about unattractive buildings brought a feisty response from HHS. "Hey, there. Be nice," the Cabinet agency tweeted. "They call this concrete chic and we've been serving looks to the American public since 1976."
| | |  | Katie Ledecky earned the most career world championship gold medals Saturday. | - Making history: Ledecky's victory in the 800-meter freestyle in Fukuoka, Japan, gave her 16 individual gold medals in her career at worlds, breaking a tie with Michael Phelps for the most all time.
- Another record: The Bethesda native also became the first swimmer in history, male or female, to win the same event at six consecutive world championships.
