Sunny, but not too humid. Capital Weather Gang gives it an 8/10. | | | | D.C.'s mayor tried to shore up support for an emergency crime bill. | - What to know: As homicides and carjackings in D.C. continue to rise, Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) appeared yesterday with two D.C. Council members ahead of today's debate on whether to toughen some crime laws.
- What's new: The legislation would create a penalty for firing a gun in public and make it easier to detain some suspects as they await trial.
| | | | Dangerous drivers in D.C. could face harsher punishments. | - The proposal: Give more enforcement power to city agencies to target repeat offenders, including drivers who accumulate fines for speeding and reckless driving.
- Why now? The bill, introduced to the D.C. Council yesterday, comes after a March 15 crash in which D.C. driver Nakita Walker, who had five prior DUIs and a valid driver's license, is accused of killing three men.
| | | | Metro is considering six expansion options. | - Transit officials yesterday unveiled an analysis of ideas, such as a new tunnel between D.C. and Virginia, as well as stations in Georgetown and National Harbor. (See the proposed Metro maps here.)

Priority will be given to account holders with children attending school this fall.
- End of the battle: It's what parents have been fighting for since the troubled agency suspended earnings on 31,000 tuition accounts last year, citing a calculation error.
| | | | A famous Virginia pony ranch was saved from redevelopment. | - Where? On Chincoteague Island, off Virginia's Eastern Shore. The Museum of Chincoteague Island purchased the remaining 10-acre piece of the Beebe family ranch, which is memorialized in "Misty of Chincoteague," the 1947 children's book about the terrain's wild ponies.
- Much of the once-sprawling property has been replaced by vacation homes and a trailer park, and just a few horses are left in a crumbling stable.
