| 2 suspects on Tacloban police watchlist fall Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:12 AM PDT POLICE and anti-narcotics agents arrested two watchlisted personalities over alleged illegal drugs in Barangay 97-Cabalawan, Tacloban City Saturday, March 27, 2021. The suspects were identified as Jeric Zelmar, 22, and Lance Padua, 20, both residents of the city. Elements of Tacloban City Police Ofice-Police Station 2, in coordination with Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), confiscated during the operation one heat-sealed sachet of substance believed to be shabu that was bought from the suspects. Authorities also recovered from Padua's possession a boodle money worth P3,500, with P500 used as buy-bust money, four heat-sealed sachets of marijuana, and two heat-sealed sachets of substance believed to be shabu. All the recovered drug items have an estimated weight of two grams and worth of P12,500, police said in the report. Appropriate charges have been readied against the suspects. | 9 most wanted persons nabbed in Leyte Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:11 AM PDT NINE most wanted persons were arrested following heightened anti-criminality operations in Leyte towns from March 25 to 26, 2021. "We drastically reduce crime, corruption and illegal drugs and intensify manhunt operations on most wanted persons who are fugitives from justice and continue to pose threats to peace and order in our country," said Colonel Rodelio Samson, director of Leyte Police Provincial Office. The arrested persons were facing charges for violation of Anti-violence against Women and their Children Act, murder, thief, illegal logging, and cockfighting, among others. The accused were from the towns of Dulag, Barugo, Sta. Fe, Matalom, Alangalang, Dagami, and Tolosa. They were brought to their respective police stations prior to turn-over to their courts of origin. | 2 yield P3.6-M ‘shabu’ in Southern Leyte Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:10 AM PDT JOINT operatives arrested on Sunday, March 28, 2021, two persons over P3,644,800 worth of substance believed to be shabu in Barangay San Jose, Sogod, Southern Leyte. The suspects were identified as Erwin Avenido and Raphael de Guia, who have been listed as high-value targets. Combined elements of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit, Sogod Municipal Police Station, and First Southern Leyte Provincial Mobile Force Company confiscated during the buy-bust operation two bags believed to be containing shabu weighing 536 grams. On Saturday, March 27, joint police operatives in Leyte also arrested two suspected street-level drug dealers and seized P341,200 worth of illegal drugs in Barangay Sta. Fe, Matalom town. Colonel Rodelio Samson, director of Leyte Police Provincial Office, identified the suspects as John Hifner Bansale, 21, and Alfredo Kilario Jr., 29. A certain Jerome Cayanong also eluded arrest during the buy-bust operation, according to the police. The suspects will be facing complaints for violation of the Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. | 2,800 Biliranons to avail themselves of P9.8M cash aid Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:09 AM PDT A TOTAL of 2,800 informal sector workers in Biliran are set to benefit from P9,873,500 assistance under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (Tupad) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). "May these Tupad grants bring new ray of hope and optimism to our informal sector workers here in Biliran especially during this time of pandemic," said DOLE-Eastern Visayas Director Henry John Jalbuena. The labor official also lauded the "active partnership" of the local government unit (LGU) officials during the recently-held awarding of checks to the Provincial Government of Biliran and seven municipalities of the province. The Tupad funds include P1,735,500 for the Province of Biliran; P1,751,750 for LGU-Naval; P874,250 for LGU-Almeria; P1,313,000 for LGU-Kawayan; P438,750 for LGU-Maripipi; P698,750 for LGU-Culaba; P1,313,000 for LGU-Caibiran and P1,748,500 for Biliran. Public Employment Service Office managers representing their local chief executives were also present during the turnover of financial assistance. | 3 Leyte students die in apparent suicide Posted: 29 Mar 2021 05:19 AM PDT THREE high school students died in an apparent suicide in Leyte towns on Sunday, March 28, 2021. The victims, aged 13, 14 and 16, were from Bato, Palo, and Baybay City, all in Leyte province. In an initial investigation, police said the victims suffered from depression resulting from family and personal problems, including poor academic achievement. Authorities are conducting an investigation over the incidents. Meanwhile, Hawaii-based Filipino public health expert Dr. Christian Gloria said that "not only that depression is real, but the school system is too stressful for youth." "After visiting so many Philippine schools and seeing what's required from students... pressures to be topnotchers... it's incredibly and unnecessarily tough on students (and teachers)," Gloria told Sunstar Philippines. "Depression and suicide are symptoms and results of a harmful education system. The school system and its pressures on students need to change.
