Navy seize another smuggled cigarettes shipment

OPERATIVES of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) have seized another shipment of smuggled cigarettes while conducting maritime interdiction operation, an official said Monday, March 29.

Lieutenant Senior Grade Chester Ross Cabaltera, NFWM information officer, said the shipment of smuggled cigarettes was intercepted by the joint 4th Marine Brigade, Naval Task Group-Sulu and Naval Task Force 61 Sunday evening, March 28, south off Lagasan, Maimbung, Sulu.

Cabaltera said the sailors spotted a vessel named M/V Hana, manned by a nine-man crew, after they launched maritime interdiction operations following receipt of report that shipment of contraband transiting the waters off Saimbangon, Pata, Sulu.

Cabaltera said that M/V Hana was found to be loaded with 200 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes worth P10 million when the troops conducted an on board inspection.

He said M/V Hana, its crew and contraband were taken to the Bureau of Customs in Zamboanga City.

On Friday, March 26, NFWM personnel apprehended two motorboats, M/B Aljabar and M/B Almalyn, loaded with P3.8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes near Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City.

Anti-drug stings net ex-Air Force, 4 others

FIVE persons, including a former soldier, were arrested in separate anti-drug operations in Zamboanga City, the police reported Monday, March 29, 2021.

Police Captain Edwin Duco, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the arrested suspects as Alexander Barredo, 37, a former Air Force personnel; Reynaldo Tulawe, 32; Alvin Taji, 39; Den Den Alam, 34; and Khalid Arabain, 25.

Duco said that Barredo and Tulawe were nabbed in possession of some P2,040 substance believed to be shabu, P3,094 worth of dried marijuana leaves and P200 marked money in a buy-bust operation around 5:20 p.m. Sunday, March 28, in Sitio Luyahan, Pasonanca village, Zamboanga City.

Duco said Taji yielded some P6,800 worth of shabu and P200 marked money when arrested in a buy-bust operation around 9:35 p.m. Sunday in Cabatangan village, Zamboanga City.

Recovered from Alam and Arabain were P1,000 worth of shabu and P200 marked money when arrested in a buy-bust operation around 10:30 p.m. Sunday Phase III, Vallevista subdivision in Kasanyangan village, Zamboanga City.

Duco said the suspects were detained while charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed against them. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Abu Sayyaf bandit arrested in Zamboanga City

LAWMEN have arrested an Abu Sayyaf bandit in a coastal village in Zamboanga City, the police reported Monday, March 29, 2021.

The suspected Abu Sayyaf bandit, identified as Merham Tulawi Nasalon, 22, was nabbed in a law enforcement operation by way of service of search warrant for violation of Republic Act 10591, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, March 28, in Sitio Niyog-Niyog in Muti, Zamboanga City.

Ylagan said Nasalon is a follower of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Marzan Ajijul.

Seized from the suspects' hideout were a caliber .45 pistol with ammunition, gun parts for caliber .45 pistol and M-16 Armalite rifle and assorted identified cards (IDs).

Ylagan said Nasalon was under investigation to determine about his plans and activities in Zamboanga City amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said Nasalon was arrested by combined operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Zamboanga City Police Office and 74th Infantry Battalion. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Navy seizes P3.8-M smuggled cigarettes off Zamboanga

THE Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) in coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted a shipment of P3.8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in Basilan Strait, an official of the NFWM announced Sunday, March 28, 2021.

Lieutenant Chester Ross Cabaltera, NFWM information officer, said the smuggled cigarettes were intercepted Friday, March 26, near Santa Crus Island, Zamboanga City.

Cabaltera said the operatives of the NFWM and BOC spotted two motorboats steaming off Zamboanga City while conducting a maritime patrol in the area. This was following receipt of a report that shipment of smuggled cigarettes was set to arrive in Zamboanga City from Jolo, Sulu.

He said the two motorboats were found to be loaded with 108 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes--Bravo and San Marino--with an estimated worth of P3.8 million when inspected by the joint NFWM and BOC team.

He said the two motorboats with their crew and cargo were escorted to Ensign Majini Pier of the Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City for proper disposition. (SunStar Zamboanga)

DENR releases 86 olive ridley turtle hatchlings

PERSONNEL of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) released 86 olive ridley turtle hatchlings to the natural habitat in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, a DENR official announced Sunday, March 28, 2021.

Rosevirico Tan, DENR regional information officer, said the turtle hatchlings were released Monday, March 22, by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) personnel of Ramon Magsaysay at the coast of Bulanit village in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.

Tan said the turtle hatchlings came from a nesting site, which was spotted in January by a local fisherman, Jason Placido, who reported to Cenro-Ramon Magsaysay for proper monitoring and documentation.

He said the Cenro-Ramon Magsaysay in coordination with the village council of Bulanit had since monitored the nesting site until its successful hatching on Monday, March 22.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified olive ridley turtles as vulnerable at a global state due to multiple threats to their population.

The March 22 release of olive ridley turtle hatchlings was the second within one week.

Last week, the Biodiversity and Conservation Unit personnel of the Cenro-Imelda, Zambonga Sibugay also released 86 Hawksbill turtle hatchlings in the province.

Army battalion holds anti-insurgency dialogue

THE Army's 10th Infantry Battalion in partnership with the police have conducted an anti-insurgency dialogue in one of the villages in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental, the military reported Saturday, March 27, 2021.

The 1st Infantry "Tabak" Division said in a statement that the activity, dubbed as community peace and order and public safety dialogue, was held Wednesday, March 24, in Tuyabang Bajo, Oroquieta City.

The Tabak division said the dialogue focused on the campaign against the community New People's Army (NPA) terrorists, who are scheduled to celebrate the 52nd anniversary on Monday, March 29.

Aside from anti-insurgency, other topics they discussed during the dialogue were on the campaign against illegal gambling, illegal drugs, Municipal and Village Ordinances aimed to prevent cases of Covid-19.

They also tackled the role of the comminity in Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict, which falls under Executive Order no. 70.

The Tabak division said the dialogue was attended by officials, Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teammembers and residents of Tuyabang Bajo, Oroquieta City. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Lawmen destroy 2 marijuana plantations

GOVERNMENT operatives have raided two plantations and destroyed some P21 million worth of marijuana plants in the province of Sulu, the military reported Saturday, March 27, 2021.

Colonel Hernanie Songano, 4th Marine Brigade commander, said the two marijuana plantations were raided Friday by joint marines, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and police forces in Masjid Punjungan village, Kalingalang Caluang, Sulu.

Songano said the marijuana plantations, which have a total area of two hectares, were discovered through the concerted efforts of his command and that of the PDEA-Sulu office and Sulu Police Provincial Office.

Songano said a certain Utoh, the alleged owner of the marijuana plantations, was not around when the joint team launched the raid.

"We have burned the marijuana on site and we will continue to scour the aforesaid area to locate other possible sites of marijuana plantation," Songano said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
