Philadelphia is about to go completely dark at night. Here’s why

One night last October, more than 1,000 birds fell to their deaths in Philadelphia. Blamed on a rare convergence of migration and bad weather, it was worsened by all the lights left on inside tall buildings overnight. While the mass casualties were shocking, bird deaths resulting from collisions with buildings are fairly common—and lighting is a big factor. To help mitigate this, Audubon Mid-Atlantic has launched a new initiative, called Lights Out Philly, which encourages building owners to turn off or dim their lights during two migration periods this year, the first of which starts April 1. Not only will the move save birds’ lives, but it will help save on energy costs as well.
