Red fighter surrenders in Samar

A 24-YEAR-OLD alleged member of the New People's Army (NPA) voluntarily surrendered to the authorities in Paranas, Samar Wednesday, May 26, 2021.

Alias Baki, former squad member of Central Front Samar-1 sub-regional committee, also turned over one caliber .38 Smith and Wesson revolver with defaced serial number and six pieces of caliber .38 live ammunition.

In the information released by the Police Regional Office-Eastern Visayas, the former rebel member surrendered after a series of negotiations facilitated by the 802nd Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion-Eastern Visayas led by Captain Norman Kiat-Ong Jr., officer-in-charge, and 3rd Maneuver Platoon Leader led by Lieutenant Gregorio Wabina Jr., under the supervision of Force Commander Colonel Jose Roy Torrechilla.

According to authorities, alias Baki wanted to live a normal life together with his family without fear and danger.

The rebel surrenderer and his firearm are now in the custody of 802nd Maneuver Company.

Eastern Visayas, particularly Samar Island, has remained a hotbed of insurgency with the continued presence of the NPA, which has been waging a Maoist-inspired guerrilla war since the late 1960s. (SunStar Philippines)

Fire razes 6 houses in Basey town

A TOTAL of six houses were razed by fire in Barangay Loyo, Basey, Samar Wednesday, May 26, 2021, according to the Bureau of Fire and Protection.

The fire broke out at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and was declared fire out after around 39 minutes.

Some other concerned citizens also tried to put out the spreading fire.

No casualties were reported, said the Basey Municipal Police Station in the report.

However, the estimated cost of damages amounted to P220,000.

Kolor Banwa art competition winners named

TACLOBAN City's premier art group Kolor Banwa announced the winners of its recently concluded 2021 Arte Larab painting contest-anniversary special.

For the open category, the winners were Clint Nico Laguilles, 1st place; Melchor Tagana, 2nd place; and Loreden Royeras, 3rd place. For the student category, the winners were Michael Flores, 1st place; Jenno Manatad, 2nd place; and Marjorie Bulusan, 3rd place.

The honorable mention awardees for the open category were Christian Cabillo, Richard Fumar Rona, Dhon Raul Labita, Jayson Antillon, and Jerico Lumapas.

For the student category, the honorable mention awards were given to Sarah Jane Lorenzo, Angel Danli Elyza Chua, Jethro Acero, Richel Cacanog, and Mary Faith Dalogdog.

The People's choice award for the open category went to Dhon Raul Labita while the People's choice award for the student category was given to Mary Faith Dalogdog.

Kolor Banwa Founder Dante Enage thanked the support of the city government of Tacloban, I Love Tacloban Youth Organization, businessman Raymund Romualdez, Councilor Aimee Delgado-Grafil, and fellow artists Sam Penaso, Ombok Cleofe Villamor, Billy Pomida, who served as judges during the competition.

Also present during the event were Kolor Banwa (Kolor han biswal arte nga Waraynon) members Philip Salem, Aldrin Mercado, Archie Prisno, Tata De La Cruz, Joan Bituin, Melchor Tagana, Hazel Llemos, and Kenn Manatad.

Since 2005, Kolor Banwa has helped young and aspiring artists by providing them training and exhibit venues to showcase their artworks to a bigger audience. (SunStar Philippines)

2 teens rob, kill retired US Navy officer in Tacloban

POLICE apprehended two teenagers who allegedly robbed and killed a 62-year-old retired United States Navy officer in Tacloban City Monday, May 24, 2021.

The suspects, aged 16 and 17, were arrested in a hot pursuit operation around 5:30 p.m. Monday in Barangay 49-Youngfield, Tacloban.

Police said the two minors were behind the killing of Thomas Mate in his rented establishment on Zamora Street, Barangay 7 around 3 a.m. of the same day.

Initial investigation disclosed that the suspects were hiding inside the establishment of the victim.

Upon sensing the presence of the owner, the suspects and the victim had a scuffle, which resulted in the stabbing of the victim.

Mate was rushed to the hospital, but he was declared dead by the attending physician.

Meanwhile, police said they arrested another three suspects in a robbery hold-up along Justice Romualdez Street in Tacloban on May 23.

The suspects were identified as Joshua Libotano, 21; Angelo Nablo, of legal age; and one John Doe.

The victim, 25-year-old vendor Ali Guro, said he was waiting for a vehicle on the side road when three unidentified persons allegedly approached him and declared a hold-up.

He tried to fight back, but he was overpowered by the suspects, according to the police.

The three male persons allegedly grabbed the victim's hands and neck and took his red sling bag that contained P1,000 cash, driver's license, identification cards, and three pieces of watches worth P2,000.

The victim identified the suspects through their descriptions and a rouge's gallery at the police station.

Catbalogan receives P4.8-M livelihood grants

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has awarded P4.8 million worth of livelihood grants to help the 160 parents and guardians of child laborers in Catbalogan City, Samar.

"May this help from our government brings hope to you and your families and somehow ease the burdens you are experiencing because of the pandemic," said labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

From the livelihood beneficiaries, 25 persons with employable skills "will be referred to the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) to avail of the agency's innovative skills training programs that will generate greater employment opportunities."

Bello also expressed gratitude to Samar Second District Representative Sharee Ann Tan, Governor Reynolds Michael Tan, and city officials "for supporting the DOLE programs and implementing the same in the province for the benefit of more workers."

"Because of your relentless support, we are able to reach and benefit more people with our livelihood and employment programs," Bello said.

Meanwhile, the labor secretary announced that they have paid a total of P975,000 wages under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (Tupad) to some 300 workers of Hinabangan, Samar on May 21, 2021.

Each beneficiary received P3,250 as payment for their 10-day service, the official said.

The payout ceremony was also attended by labor Undersecretary Renato Ebarle, Bureau of Workers with Special Concern Director Ma. Karina Perida-Trayvilla, and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac, DOLE-Eastern Visayas Director Henry John Jalbuena, DOLE Samar Provincial Head Fe Norma Valuis, Hinabangan Vice-Mayor Clarito Rosal, Hinabangan municipal councilors, DOLE-Technical Support Services Division Chief Edgar Tabuyan, and DOLE-Samar Field Office personnel. Jesuit priest Renato Puentevella dies at 96

JESUIT priest Renato Puentevella passed away on Monday, May 24, 2021. He was 96.

Father Puentevella, who was fondly called Father "Ning" by friends, suffered a hip fracture from a fall last month and later developed pneumonia.

The Philippine Jesuits organization announced his passing on its website.

Fr. Puentevella died at the Jesuit Health and Wellness Center (JHWC), on the campus of Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City,

He entered the Society in 1946 and was ordained to the presbyterate in 1959.

He had been assigned to different communities including Xavier University, Ateneo de Naga, Ateneo de Iloilo-Santa Maria Catholic School, Ateneo de Zamboanga, and Ateneo de Davao as principal, counselor, teacher, and chaplain.

"Given continued virus restraints, Fr. Ning's remains will be cremated and the ashes brought to Loyola House of Studies for in-house memorial Masses there and in other communities on campus," the Jesuits said in a statement.

"They will then be kept in the JHWC until a suitable funeral Mass and inurnment in the Province cemetery at Sacred Heart Novitiate can be scheduled," it added.
