Zamboanga anti-drug stings net 7 drug suspects

SEVEN persons were arrested, while close to P100,000 worth of illegal drugs were seized in separate anti-drug operations in the Zamboanga Peninsula, the police reported Sunday, May 23, 2021.

Police Major Shellamie Chang, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the arrested suspects as follows: Jomar Villegas, 29; Adamson Ceniza, 40; Reykhent Silvano, 28; Mark Delos Santos, 29; Benhar Salip-Majid, 42; Ronald Camanio, 35; and, August Sambo, 52.

Chang said Villegas, a parking attendant, was arrested in possession of some P3,400 worth of illegal drugs, a sling bag, and P200 marked money in a buy-bust operation around 3:05 p.m. Saturday along Roberto Villares Road in Tetuan village, Zamboanga City.

She said Ceniza, a businessman, yielded some P47,600 worth of suspected shabu, a pouch, and P2,500 marked money when arrested in an anti-drug operation around 6:30 p.m. Saturday along Governor Ramos Avenue in Santa Maria village, Zamboanga City.

Chang said seized from Silvano, unemployed, and Delos Santos, a construction worker, were some P8,160 worth of suspected shabu and P200 marked money when arrested in an anti-drug operation around 6:20 p.m. Saturday at Prias Drive in Tumaga village, Zamboanga City.

She said recovered from Salilp-Majid were some P3,500 worth of suspected shabu and P200 marked money when arrested in a buy-bust operation around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Santa Catalina village, Zamboanga City.

Chang said Camanio was found in possession of some P34,000 worth of illegal drugs and marked money when arrested in a buy-bust operation around 10:40 p.m. Saturday in Gatas village, Kalawit, Zamboanga del Norte.

She said confiscated from Sambo were some P68,000 worth of suspected shabu and five P1,000 bills boodle money topped with two genuine P500 as marked money when nabbed in a buy-bust operation around 10:20 p.m. Saturday in Purok Farmer in Olingan village, Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

She added that the suspects were detained while charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed against them. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Wanted person, wife hurt in shootout

A WANTED person and his wife were injured in a shootout in a law enforcement operation in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported.

Police Brigadier General Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula director, identified them as Wahabbin Abdulhari, 48, and his wife, Rhaida, who were both admitted to the district hospital of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Ylagan said the couple was injured in a shootout that ensued around 5:30 a.m. Friday in Purok A in Canacan village, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay province.

He said the shootout broke out when Abdulhari, armed with a caliber .45 pistol, opened fire but missed when the policemen were about to serve an arrest warrant against him.

Ylagan said policemen returned fire, hitting both Abdulhari and his wife on their legs.

He said Abdulhari has a standing warrant of arrest for the crime of two-count attempted murder with P24,000 recommended bail dated September 1, 2010, issued by the court of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Ylagan said that Abdulhari will be facing additional charges, as cases of attempted murder and violation of Republic Act 10591 otherwise known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act will be filed against him. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Officials ink pact to lessen loose guns in Basilan

MILITARY and provincial government officials of Basilan have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that seeks to intensify the implementation of the small arms and light weapons (SALW) program in the province.

Basilan Governor Hadjiman Hataman-Salliman said the SALW program seeks to lessen, if not eradicate, the number of small arms and light weapons of individuals and groups to prevent them from creating havoc in the communities.

the implementation of the SALW program was initiated by the Basilan provincial government in partnership with the government's Joint Normalization Committee headed Ariel Hernandez.

Salliman, Brigadier General Domingo Gobway, Joint Task Force Basilan commander, Police Colonel Rodrigo Maramo, Basilan police director, and Lieutenant Colonel Alex Ampati, 4th Special Forces Battalion commander, spearheaded the signing of MOU on SALW Program in a ceremony Friday, May 21, at the basketball court of Buton village, Hadji Mohammad Ajul town.

The municipal and village officials of Hadji Mohammad Ajul led by Mayor Ibrahim Hadji Ballaho took part in the momentous event.

"Joint Task Force Basilan will continue to support our partners and stakeholders in all their endeavors for the attainment of our common goal that is to sustain peace in all the municipalities of Basilan," Gobway said.

During the ceremony, Captain Sherwin Latiera, 15th Special Forces Company commander, presented 23 assorted loose firearms to Gobway and Salliman.

Latiera said the firearms were voluntarily surrendered by civilians from different villages of Hadji Mohammad Ajul town.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan, Jr., commander of Western Mindanao Command, extended his full support to the implementation of the SALW program in Basilan.

Businessman hurt in gun attack, 2 children unscathed

A BUSINESSMAN, who escaped unscathed in a recent botched robbery hold-up, was wounded while his two children were safe in a gun attack in Zamboanga Sibugay province, the police reported.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Albert Larubis, Zamboanga Sibugay police director, identified the victim as Dande Calago, 27, a resident of Purok Peñarose in Poblacion village, Titay.

Larubis said Calago was walking home together with his two children around 9:35 p.m. Thursday, May 20, when shot and wounded by one of two men riding a motorcycle.

He said Calago suffered a bullet wound on the left leg and abrasions in different parts of his body. He was rushed to Dr. Sibud County Hospital for treatment, while his two children were unscathed.

Larubis said the suspects sped off towards Azusena village in Titay town after the incident.

He said an in-depth probe is underway to establish the motive as well as the identities of the suspects.

Calago escaped unscathed on May 5 in a botched robbery hold-up, while three suspects, including a soldier, were arrested by policemen in pursuit operations.

Larubis earlier identified the arrested suspects as Felix Salazar, 40, his younger brother, Jovanie, 37, and Joven Ocmer, 30, a member of the Army's 42nd Infantry Battalion based in Kalawit, Zamboanga del Norte. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Barmm hires 155 healthcare workers for Covid-19 response

THE Ministry of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOH-Barmm) hired 155 healthcare workers to strengthen the healthcare services in the province of Lanao del Sur.

Dr. Bashary Latiph, MOH minister, said 148 of the 155 are midwives while the remaining seven are physicians, who took their oath Friday, May 21.

Latiph, who administered the oath-taking ceremony, said the midwives were hired under the Midwife in Every Community in Barmm project, while the physicians were employed through the Doctors to the Barrios program.

Barmm Deputy Chief Minister Ali Solaiman, along with his fellow members of parliament, Marjanie Macasalong and Zainodin Mohammad Bato of Lanao del Sur, witnessed the ceremony.

Also present during the ceremony were Dr. Alinader Minalang and Dr. Ali Dalidig, health officers of Lanao del Sur and Marawi City, respectively.

"I'm very confident and have the highest faith that you will deliver your responsibilities as midwives and doctors with minimal supervision," Latiph told the newly hired health workers.

Of the 148 hired midwives, 25 will be deployed to Marawi City Health Office while the remaining 123 to the different Rural Health Units (RHUs) of Lanao del Sur.

The physicians will be distributed to doctorless municipalities in the province of Lanao del Sur.

Barmm Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim congratulated the newly appointed healthcare workers and thanked the MOH for facilitating yet another significant chapter in Barmm's collective dream of having a healthier autonomous region.

"As midwives, you will become the living ambassadors of our sealed vision for health care in the region," Ebrahim said.

He said they aim to deploy a total of 600 community midwives throughout the region.

The MOH had already deployed 170 midwives to its regional office and the RHUs of Maguindanao province. (SunStar Zamboanga)
