Hofileña: Anti-American resistance in Negros (Part 2) Posted: 08 Jun 2021 07:19 AM PDT DESPITE the various disagreements among Negrense officials and American colonial authorities, the American officials in Negros still indicated the Negrense cooperation to their occupation in Negros. Consequently, US President William McKinley, in his message to the US Second Philippine Commission on December 5 and 7, 1900, told the commission members to give special attention to the government in Negros so that it could serve to some extent as a model for other provisional governments, to be established in the Philippines. It was however reported, that at this point, the Negrense leaders, namely, Civil Governor Melecio Severino and Attorney-General Dionisio Mapa were supporting a plot against the American occupation and they were supported by Apolinario Mabini from the Aguinaldo Government in Manila. Despite this questionable report however, no substantial evidence against Severino and Mapa were secured and both officials were allowed to continue in their positions. Eventually, however, Gov. Howard Taft replaced both officials with Leandro Locsin and Jose Luzuriaga. The heroic anti-American resistance movement in various parts of Negros at this time had several aspects with the first led by the illustrados (notable citizens) and the second form of resistance was led by the mass- based Tulisanis, Babaylanis and other separate groups. The illustrados however in the beginning, gradually diminished in strength and eventually weakened with more loses and surrenders. Some leaders even accepted important positions in the new US controlled government and assurance of peace and prosperity under the American values and control. The alliance of the illustrados with the Tulisanis and Babaylanis eventually practically disappeared. When the Malolos government saw the crumblng of the defenses and resistance of the illustrado groups, they eventually turned as a last resort to the Tulisanis and Babaylanis and by this time, the American pacification campaign and programs of reforms had become so successful that it was no longer possible for Negrenses to stem the tide in favor of the different resistance groups. A separate historic movement at this time arose from the volunteers in Panay who joined the Negrense resistance to the Americans in the so-called Gintabuan episode. The historic memory of Gintabuan is ever-present in Negros relating to the resistance against the US Colonial forces. In fact, this heroic episode has a notable marker established by the local government along the Silay-Saravia National Highway. The Gintabuan affair began on July 26, 1899 when Roque Lopez of the Panay rebels issued instructions for an expeditionary force to land in Negros to help the insurgents. This was a result of the agreement between Lopez and Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo, and the group leaders were Justo Jalandoni and Elias Magbanua. In brief, while the several thousand troops of the Panay command had started attacking the American colonial forces, the various encounters led by Elias Magbanua, and despite the greater number of the Gintabuan local forces, the eventual result of the insurgents was to disperse rather than continue a losing resistance after about a year against the Americans. It was also likely that others had joined guerrilla bands in southern Negros with the support of the Malolos Commissioner Zoilo Mauricio. Others may have decided to merge with peaceful inhabitance while some may have gone back to Panay. Meanwhile, In Northern Negros, the Tulisanis continued to be engaged in weakened encounters with American forces and native scouts. The American colonial programs eventually continued until the period from 1901 to 1909. Despite their heroic efforts, these encounters were to be the end of the road for the remaining insurgency groups who were still carrying on the noble but losing guerilla resistance. Sanchez: In memory of Bro Alan Posted: 07 Jun 2021 06:27 AM PDT I WOULD like to honor the late Alan Brillantes, otherwise known as Bro Alan among Catholic charismatics of The Light of Jesus Family, the organization that hosts The Feast Bacolod. Bro Alan was the senior Feast Builder. At age 56, he suffered a massive heart attack on May 30. He and his family were also diagnosed as coronavirus-positive and were quarantined at a Covid facility near the University of St La Salle (USLS) where he graduated summa cum laude and where Alan taught accounting. Bro Alan was a Catholic member of the underground church in Saudi Arabia while working for Aramco as an accountant. He was one of the first to visit me at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center (BAMC) when I myself was confined there on January 13, 2020. I appreciate that Bro Alan insisted that we include a section on global warming along the lines of Pope Francis's encyclical on the environment Laudato Si. We featured The World on Fire that featured reprints on climate change. As the editor-in-chief of The Feast Bacolod Bulletin and an environmentalist, I have no issues with that. Bro Alan was my referee when it was time to renew my accreditation as a court-annexed mediator. As CAMs, we are considered as pillars of Negrense society. But because of Covid-19, the Philippine Mediation Center is closed, As Dovey Arsenio texted me, "Gud am for now we are not allowed to conduct video conferences." I find it alarming that Covid-19 is getting too close for comfort. Two Feasters in fact were downed with Covid-19. Another Feaster texted me that her uncle, a barangay captain, was confined at the intensive care unit of a local hospital. Thank God he recovered. Hasta la vista, Hermano Alan.
