Town councilor, 6 others nabbed in Eastern Visayas drug stings

A MUNICIPAL councilor and six other suspects were arrested in separate anti-drug operations in Eastern Visayas towns from June 21 to 22, 2021.

Almar Balais, a councilor of San Miguel town in Leyte, was arrested after he allegedly sold a sachet believed to be containing shabu to an undercover operative in Tacloban City on June 21.

Authorities also confiscated from the suspect's possession two medium-sized sachets of shabu, buy-bust money, and a vehicle.

The estimated worth of confiscated pieces of drug evidence was P40,800, police said in the report.

In Dulag, Leyte, the suspects were identified as Albert Tupaz, who has been listed as street-level individual, and Benjamin Raarag, a newly identified drug personality.

They were arrested on June 22 after Tupaz allegedly sold a sachet believed to be containing shabu worth P1,000.

Confiscated from Raarag were two sachets of shabu.

In Calbayog City, police rounded a fish vendor, Abundio Pamad, for allegedly selling a sachet of shabu worth P500 to an undercover operative on June 21.

Also recovered from the suspect's possession were seven sachets believed to be containing shabu, buy-bust money, and P500 cash.

Tacloban police, in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), also nabbed two suspected drug personalities in Tacloban. They were identified as Marlito Fian, a barangay councilor, and an 18-year-old student.

Operatives bought from them two pieces of shabu worth P20,000.

A watchlisted personality, Michael Mergildo, was arrested in Almeria, Biliran after he allegedly sold a sachet of shabu worth P500 on June 21.

Police and anti-drug agents also seized from the suspect's possession and control two sachets believed to be containing shabu.

The alleged drug evidence has an estimated weight of more or less one gram and with estimated street value of P6,800, according to the information released by the Police Regional Office.

The suspects will be facing charges for violation of sections 5 and 11, Article II of Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (SunStar Philippines)

Cops probe killing of data analyst in Leyte

POLICE are investigating the death of a 36-year-old data analyst who was killed by still unknown assailants inside his residence in Barangay Monte Alegre, Isabel, Leyte Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

The victim, Davin Maurillo, died due to multiple gunshot wounds on the different parts of his body.

Initial investigation disclosed that two unidentified suspects wearing bonnets rushed inside the victim's house and shot him without apparent reason around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The suspects fled onboard a motorcycle, according to the police. (SunStar Philippines)

Ormoc gets Pfizer vaccines for pilot rollout in Eastern Visayas

THE City Government of Ormoc received on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, a total of 1,170 doses of Pfizer vaccines for the pilot implementation in Eastern Visayas.

"Following a stringent evaluation by the central and regional offices of the DOH (Department of Health), the City Health Office (CHO) of Ormoc City, together with Mayor Richard Gomez, this is the first time that the region will be implementing an ultra-Low vaccination as per the sensitive handling requirements of Pfizer vaccines," said the DOH-Eastern Visayas on choosing Ormoc for the pilot implementation.

"They have seen our preparation and inoculation structure is well laid out. As our people have experienced in our ongoing vaccination that our system is flawless, thus, the confidence in the Pfizer rollout in Ormoc City," Gomez said in a statement.

The vaccines will be for the remaining eligible population for workers in frontline health services, senior citizens, and adults with comorbidities.

According to the regional health department, the National Task Force against Covid-19 Vaccine Cluster identified Ormoc as the pilot implementer of the Pfizer vaccine inoculation "in consideration of cold chain capacity requirements due to its cold chain facility located at the Ormoc City Superdome and the presence of an adequate vaccination team where the CHO converged into one big team its 8 vaccination teams, respectively."

"This marks another milestone for the intensified vaccination activities in the region and gives a promising reinforcement to the vaccination program and advocacy efforts in Eastern Visayas," said the DOH-Eastern Visayas.

It added that the region is expecting additional allocation of Pfizer vaccines in the coming weeks.

"As the fight against Covid-19 continues and with the presence of an additional vaccine option in the region, the agency still emphasizes that the best vaccine remains to be the one available," the regional health department said.

As of Wednesday, June 23, the region's total number of Covid-19 cases was at 27,498, with total recoveries at 24,485 (89.04 percent), total deaths at 371 (1.35 percent), and total active cases at 2,642 (9.61 percent). (SunStar Philippines)
