53IB fetes troops for meritorious achievement

Posted: 14 Jun 2021 04:08 AM PDT

THE Army's 53rd Infantry "Matapat" Battalion (IB) has bestowed Military Merit Medal (MMM) to 13 "Matapat" personnel of the battalion for meritorious achievements in duty.

Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera, commander of the 53IB, led the awarding of medal to the "Matapat" troops during flag raising ceremony Saturday, June 12, held in commemoration of the country's 123rd Independence Day.

Herrera did not release the names of the MMM awardees but said they include two officers and 13 enlisted personnel of the "Matapat" battalion.

Herrera said the MMM award is in recognition for their contributions to Development Support and Security Operations (DSSO) of the Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) in particular and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in general.

Staff Sergeant Dexter Fadrilan, one of the recipients of the award, said this was the first time -- in his 17 years of service -- that a ceremony was held to accord him such an award.

"This award is a symbol of thanks for your sacrifices and service to this Battalion and the people we serve. Note that the higher headquarters do not let your meritorious efforts go unnoticed," Herrera told the awardees.

He said the awarding ceremony is part of the 53IB's drive to pursue transformation to become a world class Army that is a source of national pride by 2028 in line with the Army Transformation Roadmap. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Adaci said the rescued individuals were taken to 4th Marine Brigade (MBde) headquarters in Luuk, Sulu, and they were given medical attention and hot meals.

He said Assiong informed them that five other passengers were rescued by a fishing boat after they jumped overboard before the arrival of the Multi-Purpose Attack Craft (MPAC) the Naval Task Force (NTG)-Sulu has dispatched upon receipt of the distress message.

He said coordination has been made to locate the whereabouts of the five passengers.

Colonel Hernani Songano, NTG-Sulu and 4MBde commander, said the rescued individuals were temporarily sheltered at the staff house of Luuk municipal government while coordination is being done for their safe return to South Ubian, Tawi-Tawi. (SunStar Zamboanga)

THE Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Barmm) is allocating additional funds for the construction of a bridge that will help lessen by two hours the travel time from Marawi City, Lanao del Sur to Cagayan de Oro City.

Barmm's Ministry of Public Works Minister Eduard Guerra said the regional government is set to allocate another P25 million for the second phase of the bridge construction under 2021 appropriations.

Guerra said the first phase of the bridge construction started in 2018 funded by the then Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) with budget allocation of P25 million.

The bridge is connected with the Kapai-Tagoloan Road, which is also termed "Dream Road 2."

The Bayug Bridge, which extends to 40 meters, is being constructed in Bago-ah Ingud village, Tagoloan II, Lanao del Sur.

Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr. said the bridge, once completed, will help ease the travel from Lanao del Sur to Cagayan de Oro City via Talakag, Bukidnon.

"Once the said road is fully constructed, it will take less than two hours for travelers from Marawi City to reach Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City," Adiong said.

Meanwhile, Guerra said his office has maintained its steadfast commitment to deliver utmost quality infrastructure facilities and services.

"We envision to increase strategic and climate-resilient infrastructure to support sustainable socio-economic development in Barmm," Guerra said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
