Americans donate their old clothes with the best of intentions, hoping for a second life for their garments, many of which are still in good condition. Unfortunately, that’s not the reality for many of the items that get donated, and the rise of fast fashion has made things even worse. For her new book Unraveled, Maxine Bedat traveled to a landfill in Ghana where many of these clothes end up. On a good day, landfills like these increase pollution and can have a devastating impact on the local environment. On a bad day—like the one Bedat visited—the landfill was literally on fire.
