Hernández  Email Nancy is a Salvadoran asylum seeker I met on my first trip the Matamoros migrant camp, where hundreds of people were waiting for immigration court dates under the Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" program. After a rather awkward first meeting, we traded phone numbers to stay in touch. I wanted to know what life in the camp was like and she wanted a connection to the world she longed to join in the United States, where her family was waiting for her and her two children. But instead of being allowed to fight for asylum inside our borders — as was done under past presidents — the Trump administration forced migrants to wait in dangerous Mexican border cities. During the pandemic, I exchanged voice memos, photos, videos and other media through messaging apps for more than a year with Nancy and got an intimate look at her precarious existence. This audio-first project with our podcast, Post Reports, is a two-episode chronicle that allows Nancy to tell her story about a policy that many Americans were unaware of or did not understand the costs and consequences of.
