Guidance Available For Water Well Installations

If you are having a water well installed, check out DEC's Consumer Protection Guide for information on how to get started, including how to find a registered water well contractor. New York's Environmental Conservation Law requires contractors to be registered and certified and provide the well owner and DEC with a Water Well Completion Report that provides the details of the water well installation.

Water wells must be constructed in accordance with NYS Department of Health Standards for Water Wells. The Department of Health provides other useful information regarding Private Water Wells, including how to test your water and maintain your water well.

NYS General Business Law 36A requires a written contract for home improvement services and materials that exceed $500. For more information on home improvement contracts, visit the New York State Attorney General's Office website.

Visit DEC's  Water Well Contractor Program webpage for additional information.

Consolidated Funding Application Closes July 30 at 4 p.m.

DEC's Division of Water has two grant programs available in the Consolidated Funding Application (CFA) .

  • Water Quality Improvement Projects (WQIP): WQIP funds implement projects to address documented water quality impairments or protect a drinking water source. Eligible project types include wastewater treatment improvement, non-agricultural nonpoint source abatement and control, land acquisition for source water protection, salt storage, aquatic connectivity restoration, and marine district habitat restoration. For full program details and requirements, including maximum award amounts, required match, and project type descriptions, view DEC's WQIP webpage.
  • Non-Agricultural Nonpoint Source Planning and MS4 Mapping Grant (NPG): NPG funds production of planning reports for nonpoint source water quality improvement projects and mapping of Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4). For full program details and requirements, including eligible grant categories, view DEC's NPG webpage.

Other water-related grant opportunities available through the CFA include:

Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Notifications

Arial View of HABs

Visit NYHABS, DEC's harmful algal bloom notification map, to view locations of freshwater HABs in New York State that were reported in the past two weeks. Click on a dot for more information, including the date it was reported, the waterbody name, and pictures. Click on the arrow at the bottom of the screen to view a list of reported HABs.

Know it. Avoid it. Report it.

If you see a HAB, please use the reporting form to submit a report to NYHABS. Because waterbodies may have HABs that have not been reported to DEC, we recommend avoiding contact with floating mats, scums and discolored water.

If you, your family, or pet have been in contact with a HAB, please rinse with clean water and report any symptoms to your local health department

Consider visiting a healthcare provider if you, your family, or your animals are experiencing symptoms related to blue-green harmful algal blooms. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting; skin, eye, or throat irritation; and allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.
