Chevy Bolts recalled again for fire risk, as GM admits battery defects

General Motors is recalling 2017-2019 model year Chevy Bolts a second time because of a risk that the battery packs could catch fire. The new recall comes after two Bolts recently caught fire despite having received the purported software fix from the previous recall, which was first announced in November 2020.

GM has also finally shed a little light on the source of the problem. The automaker says that, working with battery supplier LG Chem, it discovered that some of the cells that make up the Bolt's pack can have two simultaneous manufacturing defects. The company did not say specifically what these defects are, but when they are present they can cause a fire.

GM says it's still preparing the recall, and so it's telling owners to take...

Judge rejects Wisk Aero’s effort to block rival air taxi startup Archer from using ‘stolen’ patents

Archer

A federal judge in San Francisco rejected air taxi startup Wisk Aero's request for a preliminary injunction against rival startup Archer Aviation, as Silicon Valley's first big "flying car" legal drama heats up.

Wisk, a joint venture between Boeing and Kitty Hawk, wanted to block Archer Aviation from using any of the 52 trade secrets it alleges were stolen. Wisk is also seeking unspecified monetary damages from Archer in a lawsuit that was filed April 6th. Federal investigators are also looking into the case.

In his ruling, US District Court Judge William Orrick wrote that Wisk's request was "too uncertain and equivocal," though he acknowledged that there were "some arguable indications of misappropriation."

GM’s Super Cruise getting fully automatic, hands-free lane changes and more for 2022

General Motors' Super Cruise, one of the best advanced driver assist systems on the market, is getting a big upgrade for 2022 and will be available on way more vehicles — including, for the first time, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra half-ton pickup trucks.

To test out the new stuff, GMC had me out to GM's Milford Proving Grounds to play with the new Super Cruise on the facility's 4.5-mile banked circle track. Security at the facility is tight and our cameras were either confiscated or, in the case of my iPhone, covered in obnoxious red security tape.

I soon understood the need for security when I spotted what appeared to be the upcoming 2023 Z06 mid-engined Corvette being tested, a whole bunch of GMC Hummer EV pickups and,...

Lucid Motors’ $4.5 billion merger is being held up by spam filters

Lucid Motors is on the precipice of completing a merger that will give the Saudi-owned electric vehicle startup $4.5 billion in fresh capital. But the deal is being held up, in part, by spam filters.

The California-based startup is merging with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, called Churchill Capital IV that is already listed on the New York Stock Exchange. For the merger to go through, Churchill shareholders have to approve a number of proposals that outline the terms. That vote was supposed to close today, but Churchill extended the deadline to Friday because not enough shareholders have approved a key proposal.

There are a few possible reasons why. The first is the spam filter issue. To participate in that vote,...
