TWO soldiers were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded at a checkpoint in Basilan province, a top military official said Tuesday, August 31, 2021.

Brigadier General Domingo Gobway, 101st Infantry Brigade commander, said the incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. Tuesday at a checkpoint in Campo Uno village, Lamitan City, Basilan.

He said the gunmen sped toward Cabobo village, Lamitan City.

The two injured soldiers were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

3 Sulu island towns receive desalination machines

Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:53 AM PDT

THE Ministry of the Interior and Local Government in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MILF-Barmm) released three desalination machines worth P60 million on Saturday, August 28, to the Provincial Government of Sulu.

Sulu Provincial Administrator Erwin Tan, who received the desalination machines on behalf of Governor Abdusakur Tan, said the equipment are intended for the island towns of Hadji Panglima Tahil, Pandami, and Pata.

Each desalination machine has an output capacity of 22,000 liters of water per day and can operate for eight to 10 hours. Each machines costs P20 million.

The MILF-Barmm said the desalination machines are the first three of the 10 sets of machines to be distributed to the provinces of Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

The distribution of the desalination machines seeks to address the scarcity of safe drinking water in the island provinces of Barmm.

Tan said the machines will be of great help to ease the burden of residents living in the island towns in accessing clean potable water.

"On behalf of Governor Abdusakur Tan, we are thankful to Barmm Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim, MILG Minister Naguib Sinarimbo, at Barmm Government for the machines," Tan said.

Emini Dadiri, MILG-Sulu provincial director, said the ministry eyes provision of additional desalination machines to the other island municipalities and coastal villages in the province. (SunStar Zamboanga)
