Inside Don Norman’s Herculean quest to fix design education

Don Norman’s design experience could fill several people’s resumes. And yet, at 85, the godfather of UX shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, he’s emboldened by a new, radical mission: to totally reimagine how design is taught.

Two years ago, Norman cofounded the Future of Design Education Initiative. The idea is that designers today are solving a very different set of problems from designers of years past—and their training should reflect that. Collaboration, critical thinking, and multidisciplinary studies are largely absent from design education, but Norman believes they’re crucial for designers to tackle major issues like climate change and racial equity. It’s a massive task, but Norman is ready for the challenge. Read Elissaveta M. Brandon’s interview with the legendary designer here.
