In Ukraine, suspicious markings on buildings reveal the scare tactics of urban warfare

The city government of Kyiv, Ukraine, recently sent out a dire warning to its residents: Check the roof of your building for any suspicious signs. The message suggested that the impending invasion of Russian forces might be guided by literal targets painted on the roofs of homes. Images of such markings began appearing online, though their provenance is hard to substantiate.

These kinds of aerial targets have been used in warfare in the past, according to military experts. They may also be a new form of intimidation and fear mongering. Or they might be little more than an internet-fueled urban myth.

Either way, experts argue, the idea of marking buildings for attack and intimidation is a sign that this war—taking place in the civilian space of the city—is going to be complex and potentially catastrophic. Read my story
