The 258 vendors or stalls are divided into four sections: the food section, accessories, ready-to-wear (RTW), and massage. The food section brought in the most earnings with P348,900 collected from 58 vendors, followed by the RTW section with P311,290 from 65 vendors, and P306,460 from 65 vendors in accessories. Both the RTW and accessories section have a monthly due of P2,170 or P70 per day, while the food vendors are due P3,100 per month or P100 per day.The massage section, with a monthly rent of P620 per month or P20 per day, produced P87,740.Cainglet, meanwhile, said their office has proposed the expansion of the Roxas Night Market by adding more stalls."Considering na only face mask atong restrictions sa Covid-19, pero magdepende pa ni sa pag-convene sa board ug kung unsa ang maaprubahan (that the mandatory wearing of face masks is the only Covid-19 restriction, but this would still depend on the convening of the board, and what will be approved)," he said. |

DCPO heightens security vs bombings Posted: 31 May 2022 07:19 AM PDT THE Davao City Police Office (DCPO) revived the Davao Defense System (DDS) to prevent bombing incidents in the city."Gi-revive nato ni for the purposes nga isa ni sa atong operational and tactical program strategy para maprevent nato ang similar incident nga nahitabo sa Central Mindanao (We revived it as part of our operational and tactical program strategy to prevent a similar incident in Cebntral Mindanao from happening here)," PMaj. Teresita Gaspan, DCPO spokesperson, said.Gaspan said DDS is conducting heightened checkpoint operations in Davao City."Masinati nato no nga gikan sa atoang tri-boundaries, kani atoang border control points, stringent ang atong conduct sa checkpoint hangtod dire sa sulod sa atoang syudad, tanan nga mobyahe and mosulod dire i-inspection gyud nato (From the tri-boundaries of the border control points to the inner parts of the city, there will be stringent checkpoints. Those who will travel to the city will undergo inspection)." Gaspan said.Gaspan said this intervention would help in preventing a bombing incident."Mao na ang isa sa mga intervention nga ginahimo nato, nga mamahimong dili kini makasulod sa atoa kay kasagarang nahitabo tong duha ka bomba, planted sa sulod sa bus, that's why istrikto gyud kaayo ang atoang ginabuhat nga checkpoint (This is the intervention we are doing now. The two explosions were caused by explosives that were planted inside the bus. We will be very strict at the checkpoints)," Gaspan said.Gaspan said DDS would also cover areas where people tend to gather."Daghan ta og mga pulis nga atong gipangkatag, for purposes nga maka-monitor ug maka-bantay sa tanan natong mga areas, maglantaw especially kung adunay mga butang or mga bags nga mabilin, ang walay tag-iya (We have deployed several police for the purposes of monitoring and securing areas as well as check unattended bags)," Gaspan said.Gaspan said that all police stations are required to render checkpoint operations."(They) are required to render checkpoint operations right after another police station mahuman sa ilahang duty so wala nay putol, hindi siya simultaneous, merong oras na two to four hours na mag-conduct sila ng checkpoint, then another na pud police station na pud then another police station na pud ang mag-conduct ([Police stations] are required to render their service to checkpoint operations one after the other every two to four hours. This will not be a simultaneous operations but a continuous one. When one station is done with their checkpoint, another will start)," Gaspan said.Gaspan asked the public to be patient with the checkpoints implemented by the DCPO."Masinati nato ang traffic, tungod aning atong ginahimo karun, pero dili mani pernamente nga ing-ani, sa pagkakaron lang part kini sa atoang strikto nga security measures para maprevent ang kaning panghitabo (We will experience heavy traffic due to this intervention, but this is not permanent, this is part of our strict security measures to ensure we prevent a similar incident)... Mag-adjust sila kay para mani sa atong kaayuhan, kini para sa gitinguha nato nga magpadayon nga malinawon ang atong syudad ug walay mga hulga sa terorista nga makaapekto kanato (They need to adjust because this is for the benefit of everyone, for the peace and order of our city and prevent terrorists from affecting us), even information nga dunay mga (on) bomb threats, whether it is misinformation or false allegation we do not take it lightly, we take it seriously," Gaspan said. |
Posted: 31 May 2022 07:19 AM PDT THE Sperm whale that washed up ashore in the Barangay Sugal Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental died of old age, said D'Bone Collector Museum founder Darrell D. Blatchley."The scratches on the whale were from it banging into the rocks after it [was] stranded. there were no 'wounds' just scratches. Cause of death [was] old age; blood from decomposing and starting to leak out," Blatchley said in an interview with Sun Star Davao.Blatchley said that the death of the sperm whale is a rare case."After 12 years and 75 animals, he joined the only 15 that actually died of Natural Causes. He lived a long life and I will know his age later in the preservation but he washed up dead on Sikalig beach, a peaceful area in Barangay Sugal Jose Abad Santos," Blatchley said.Blatchley said it took them six days to debone the sperm whale that was 60 feet long and between 9.5 to 10.5 feet wide."It took five days of cutting and one day to load the bones. The meat was buried on site. There were five locals that were a big help [in] removing the bones. They help make the work go faster. It was stinky nasty work full of maggots" Blatchley said.Blatchley said several challenges during the deboning of the sperm whale made it hard for them to debone it."It was quite a distance from the road and at the bottom of a cliff. So, a road was made with a backhoe to the beach to access the whale [and] to be able to haul the bones up. Combine that with the fact it is Summer and the sun's heat is a real enemy for the workers so we worked at night. That adds [to] the need for generators and floodlights. Also, the tide was a factor," Blatchley said.Blatchley said they brought the bones of the sperm whale to Davao City to process its preservation."Now the removal of the meat and the oil takes months, if not, nearly a year plus to remove the oil. Then the drying stage and making the framework to stand it on and the building or room it will be displayed in," Blatchley said.Meanwhile, Blatchley said they did not find any ambergris in the sperm whale."None was found, in fact, in 12 years none has ever been found," Blatchley said. |
PEF: No PH Eagle nesting sites affected by open-pit mining Posted: 31 May 2022 07:17 AM PDT THE Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) said on Monday, May 30, that there are no Philippine Eagle nesting sites directly affected so far by threats of open-pit mining sites in the Davao Region."Right now, none that we know of na direct impact ng open-pit mining sa isang nesting territory," PEF development manager Andi Baldonado said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw press conference at SM City Davao on May 30.His statement comes after the resolution passed by the South Cotabato Provincial Board to lift the ban on open-pit mining in the Municipality of Tampakan, as well as the anticipated re-opening of the mining operations in Barangay Macambol in Mati City, Davao Oriental. The mining operation in Brgy. Macambol is close to the protected area of the Pujada Bay Seascape and Landscape and the forests of Mt. Hamiguitad Range Wildlife Sanctuary.Philippines Eagles are known to inhabit centuries-old forests in different areas of Davao Region, like the Mounts Makabol-Alikoson Conservation Area in Marilog District, Davao City.Baldonado said PEF has long been firm on its stand against open-pit mining due to its proven destructive impacts on the environment when operated hastily. In line with this, the PEF's action is to empower their around 500 forest guards and strengthen the Forest Guarding Program to prioritize the protection of known nesting sites against threats such as mining, illegal logging, and trapping of the Philippine Eagles."We have around 500 already forest guards working closely with us to monitor the different nesting sites. In Davao City alone, we have about 200 continually monitoring yung mga (the) logging activities, trapping or anything that's happening in the forests," Baldonado said."Ang focus namin talaga is to really make sure that itong mga nesting trees are not being cut, doon kami mas focused right now (Our main focus right now is to make sure that nesting trees are not being cut)," Baldonado said.Environmental group Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (Idis) has expressed concern over the mining operations in Tampakan and Brgy. Macambol, saying it poses huge threats to the environment and the said surrounding protected areas. However, the local government unit of Mati City assures that the mining site in Brgy. Macambol will not cause any environmental damage since protective protocols will be put in place. |
DepEd-Davao hopeful more schools will open for in-person classes Posted: 31 May 2022 06:58 AM PDT THE Department of Education (DepEd) is hopeful more schools, both private and public, will conduct face-to-face (F2F) classes next school year, according to DepEd-Davao spokesperson Jenielito Atillo.During an interview with SunStar Davao, Atillo said there are 1,589 public schools and 31 private schools conducting F2F classes and although they are hopeful it will increase, he said DepEd-Davao cannot push for schools to reopen as it is on their own discretion."We hope everybody will embrace F2F but that is subject to their readiness and compliance to the policies," Atillo said.He added that schools who are willing to open for F2F will comply with the School Safety Assesment Tool and other requirements imposed by DepEd-Davao."Those who are willimg to open for the F2F can go through the prcess that we implemented so that they can open. It doesn't mean na mag abri ta tanan because they are a lot of things we have to consider," Atillo said.Earlier, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said they are pushing for 100 percent implementation of F2F classes nationwide. But Atillo said this will still depend on the capacity and confidence of each school to hold in-person classes.Regionwide, there are 2,200 public schools and 498 private schools. There are still 611 and 467 public and private schools, respectively, that are still implementing an alternative learning set up.With regards to the low number of private schools conducting F2F, Atillo said, "We suffice that patapos na man gud ang atong school year ingana ang situation karon. We expect na come opening of classes for school year 2022 to 2023, daghan na ang private schools nato na mag participate."Schools conducting F2F classes have also done their end-of-school-year rights, including a number of private schools, said Atillo. |
