Meanwhile, Joanna takes freediving lessons from an extremely hot instructor named Robert (Tony Labrusca). Joanna's repressed sexuality is awakened, and boldly lets Robert to dive into her. Can video games affect child’s intelligence?

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:49 AM PDT

Dear Dr. Fritz,Please call me Maya. I am quite concerned with my 9-year old son. He plays video games almost day and night, except when he is at school or doing his homework. But, whenever he has free time, he is glued to these video games. I am now worried because I am afraid that these video games could rotten my son's intelligence. Thanks and God bless.Maya of SurigaoDear Maya of Surigao,Don't worry because a new study shows that children might get a brain boost from playing hour after hour of video games. The said study which was published in the journal Scientific Reports reported that American kids between 9 and 10 years of age who spent more time playing video games had a significant increase in their intelligence scores after retesting two years later -- amounting to an extra 2.5 IQ points above the average.Well, that is understandable as playing video games requires active strategizing, planning and executive decision-making. And I think that goes the same way with strategy games. So, there's nothing to worry much on how video games can affect the intelligence of your son. However, you should also consider the possible negative health effects from video gaming that were found in other research. This includes an increase in the risk for depression and anxiety, impeding their getting into becoming adult and physical ills, like obesity. If you really want an intelligent boost, there are so much out there that could help. Chess, piano, guitar or violin lessons, scrabble, tennis are just a few options. The problem with video games is that they are designed to be addicting. So, you can see how your son is glued to his video games. But, remember the more your child sits and do more with his video games, that is unhealthy and dangerous.Good luck!Dr. Fritz(Dr. Fritz Legarde Espedilla is an aesthetic dermatologist and surgeon and a clinical sexologist. Embracing change on the beach

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:43 AM PDT

Although I love to visit beaches, I would opt to stay in a hut with a cold drink to watch the beach waters dancing. I am used to contemplating while listening to the beach waves, and I am upset when I hear loud voices. Hence, when the Ateneo de Davao University- School of Nursing (SON) organized team building at the beach, I was hesitant to attend. Would I enjoy watching the beach waters and listening to beach waves with the crowd? And so, we arrived at around 8:30 AM, the cold breeze welcomed us, but honestly, I was a bit frustrated to see how far the actual venue from the entrance was. But I spoke to myself, "patience is a virtue," funny, but as I took every step, I chanted the said words. Until I reached the place, I started to hear people talking, so happy after two years that we finally came together face to face. Then I realized, oh, these lovely people are those with whom I have worked together online. But still, I opted to watch the beach water by far and listen to the beach waves. Yet, eventually, I noticed that I enjoyed the team-building activities. I see that everyone works as a team to reach the game's objectives. Some groups were silent types, and others were happily noisy, which I thought would upset me. But it turned out that I noticed the joy encapsulating my spirit. The whole activity is like medicine to me, curing my tired thoughts due to work responsibilities. And when I sat beside Dr. Liza Floresca, SON newly appointed Dean, I felt very comfortable. Now I can speak my mind and is not afraid that my ideas will be devalued. As the new Academic Coordinator, I think that I can do more with her openness and will not be hesitant to explore what will be better for the SON.And I felt the same with Ms. Magnolia Jadulang, the SON-Related Learning Experience Coordinator. We might have had misunderstandings in the past for petty reasons, but I did not expect we would come this far, trusting each other. Working comfortably together, enjoying each other's company. This seems unreal for two people with different personalities and views, but it happened, and now we share the same goals. While watching the seasonal clinical instructors, Melba Irene Gabuya, Cynthia Villanueva, Jenneth Estampa and Mary Hazel Facundo, I felt triumphant. I remember all of us, including those unable to attend the team building, working as one despite the many adversities. The "22" years of joys and tears have made us stronger and more united. While I am mesmerized not by the beach water anymore but by the clinical instructors playing, eating, and chatting together. I see the amazing young clinical instructors who will be the future epitome of the SON. They were like "us" 22 years ago, quick, and highly spirited. Aiza Lyra Tan thinks fast, Czar Jacobe is artistic, Michael Cahandig is goal-oriented, and Francis Handugan is eloquent. While Mikee Beldua Jr. is hard-working, Henry Barriga Jr. is honest, Josephine Serra is organized, and Trisha Guioguio is a good leader. These are the few among the best. So, it seems like all the new Clinical instructors have their own talents that, when grouped together, will make the SON best among the best. So, I guess a significant change is coming for the SON. But remember that we are the instruments for change because we are the change we pursue. So, let us welcome change by letting go of the past and learning from it, and I think this is the beginning of attaining our objectives for the SON.All of these I realized while I was on the beach. But this time, I did not just stay in the hut with a cold drink to watch the beach waters and listen to the beach waves. But I enjoyed the activities with the seasoned and young, newly hired clinical instructors, not only with a cold drink but ironically with a hot coffee. Oh now, I am starting to embrace the change!

Estremera: Life’s mysteries

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:34 AM PDT

"I LIKE how you reinvented yourself," a friend said referring to my past life as the editor-in-chief of Sun.Star Davao and now spending time crocheting and helping (with a major boost from volunteers and friends) both children with cancer at the Southern Philippines Medical Center and persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Davao City Female Jail.I didn't reinvent myself. Everything happened as if planned and I just walked into it, clueless but willing, and now there is the Healing Hearts Bears project...Short intro: Healing Hearts Bears are crocheted teddy bears designed as healing companions of children with cancer at the Children's Cancer Institute of the Southern Philippines Medical Center. It was "launched" on February 14, 2022 with the first batch of 53 crocheted bears made by eight volunteers — Dr. Joji Salvador, Tasha and Apple Sandique, Tonette Quintos, Yvonne Biyo, Alex Hao, Mercy Buenaventura, and myself. Several other volunteers have joined hence, crocheting during their free time, which is not everyday, so we just gather what we can and bring them over to SPMC. Among the active ones are Cynthia Iñigo Atienza and Ma. Antonieta Villarin. That I didn't even know how to crochet until October 2021 hints at how this story will unfold. It started with sponsored contents that started appearing on my Facebook feeds about amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting dolls. The images were so cute and appearing every so often, I decided to learn to crochet after buying a set of patterns and realizing I didn't understand what the patterns were saying.By December 2021, I was already working on a Nativity Set when fellow Pranic healer Yvonne Biyo, who I dragged into my addiction, said she was sending tiny toys to the House of Hope for children with cancer. Me, being me, thought... "If you're gonna make something, make something big enough for the children to hug!"Teddy bears! But what kind and what for? Being a Pranic healer and Arhatic Yoga practitioner, I thought, why not infuse the bears with healing energies and make them into the children's healing companions? Inputting the guided meditation that is at the very foundation of Pranic healing — the Meditation on Twin Hearts — thus, the Healing Hearts Bears concept was born, December 24, 2021.Each bear started with just a heart, but the final design now has a crown (on top of the head) and a heart — the twin hearts. In Pranic Healing, the heart chakra is the center for human love (love for family, friends, people and things close to us) and the crown chakra is the center for universal love. You can only activate your center for universal love if your heart chakra is activated. Meaning, it's impossible to love the World if you do not love those around you. But that's another long story about healing energies and blessing the Earth...The idea about a healing companion in the form of a teddy bear caught on and a few friends and friends of friends responded to my call for volunteers. But my idea of making something "big" wasn't as big as my buddy Kublai Millan's concept of BIG. He wanted something bigger. Thus, by March 30, 2022 the proposal to bring the bear-making to the Davao City Female Jail was discussed with Davao City Integrated Gender and Development Division's point person Lorna Mandin. On April 12, Lorna accompanied us to the jail to meet with the Assistant Warden and the one in charge of livelihood programs, and by April 18, we had our first meeting with the chosen PDLs along with a bigger group whom we all requested to join us for the Meditation on Twin Hearts to cleanse the energies of the jail and allow the 20 chosen women to make bears capable of becoming real healing companions. We've been going there every Monday hence, conducting the Meditation on Twin Hearts with the PDLs and collecting and paying for the bears the chosen crocheters are tasked to make. All these demand resources — for payment, for materials, for logistics, every single week. But somehow, we never run out. Friends are always around, physicalized angels all willing to contribute for the women and the children, and all because on December 24, 2021, I asked myself: "Why not?", and several more joined in.Was it a coincidence that it was Christmas Eve? As is often said, there are no coincidences in this world, just synchronicities. Interestingly, the amigurumi feeds stopped sometime in February and I noticed that because I haven't been seeing cute dolls anymore. saestremera@gmail.com

City Enterprise: 2nd night market possible

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:28 AM PDT

THE Davao City Economic Enterprise (CEE) is open to the possibility of having another night market in the city, aside from the existing in Roxas Avenue."As of now, wala pa'y finality or proposal, pero possible siguro na mahitabo para madungangan pa considering nagkadaghan ang influx sa atong tao sa Roxas Night Market (there is still no finality or proposal, but maybe there is a possibility that another place will be designated as a night market considering the influx of the people at the Roxas Night Market)," CEE operations assistant Derreck Cainglet Jr. said in an interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio Tuesday morning, May 31.Cainglet said this proposal, however, must be approved by the Tiangge sa Katawhan board if this would be approved.Although there is still no discussion raised to the board as of now.The official said the proposal was raised considering the large influx of marketgoers in Roxas every night. The city government of Davao has earned at least P1 million from rent from the Roxas Night Market since its reopening in March 2022.Cainglet Jr. told SunStar Davao in a previous report that a total of P1,054,390 was collected from the rental payment of 258 vendors in the said night market. The 258 vendors or stalls are divided into four sections: the food section, accessories, ready-to-wear (RTW), and massage. The food section brought in the most earnings with P348,900 collected from 58 vendors, followed by the RTW section with P311,290 from 65 vendors, and P306,460 from 65 vendors in accessories. Both the RTW and accessories section have a monthly due of P2,170 or P70 per day, while the food vendors are due P3,100 per month or P100 per day.The massage section, with a monthly rent of P620 per month or P20 per day, produced P87,740.Cainglet, meanwhile, said their office has proposed the expansion of the Roxas Night Market by adding more stalls."Considering na only face mask atong restrictions sa Covid-19, pero magdepende pa ni sa pag-convene sa board ug kung unsa ang maaprubahan (that the mandatory wearing of face masks is the only Covid-19 restriction, but this would still depend on the convening of the board, and what will be approved)," he said.

DCPO heightens security vs bombings

THE Davao City Police Office (DCPO) revived the Davao Defense System (DDS) to prevent bombing incidents in the city."Gi-revive nato ni for the purposes nga isa ni sa atong operational and tactical program strategy para maprevent nato ang similar incident nga nahitabo sa Central Mindanao (We revived it as part of our operational and tactical program strategy to prevent a similar incident in Cebntral Mindanao from happening here)," PMaj. Teresita Gaspan, DCPO spokesperson, said.Gaspan said DDS is conducting heightened checkpoint operations in Davao City."Masinati nato no nga gikan sa atoang tri-boundaries, kani atoang border control points, stringent ang atong conduct sa checkpoint hangtod dire sa sulod sa atoang syudad, tanan nga mobyahe and mosulod dire i-inspection gyud nato (From the tri-boundaries of the border control points to the inner parts of the city, there will be stringent checkpoints. Those who will travel to the city will undergo inspection)." Gaspan said.Gaspan said this intervention would help in preventing a bombing incident."Mao na ang isa sa mga intervention nga ginahimo nato, nga mamahimong dili kini makasulod sa atoa kay kasagarang nahitabo tong duha ka bomba, planted sa sulod sa bus, that's why istrikto gyud kaayo ang atoang ginabuhat nga checkpoint (This is the intervention we are doing now. The two explosions were caused by explosives that were planted inside the bus. We will be very strict at the checkpoints)," Gaspan said.Gaspan said DDS would also cover areas where people tend to gather."Daghan ta og mga pulis nga atong gipangkatag, for purposes nga maka-monitor ug maka-bantay sa tanan natong mga areas, maglantaw especially kung adunay mga butang or mga bags nga mabilin, ang walay tag-iya (We have deployed several police for the purposes of monitoring and securing areas as well as check unattended bags)," Gaspan said.Gaspan said that all police stations are required to render checkpoint operations."(They) are required to render checkpoint operations right after another police station mahuman sa ilahang duty so wala nay putol, hindi siya simultaneous, merong oras na two to four hours na mag-conduct sila ng checkpoint, then another na pud police station na pud then another police station na pud ang mag-conduct ([Police stations] are required to render their service to checkpoint operations one after the other every two to four hours. This will not be a simultaneous operations but a continuous one. When one station is done with their checkpoint, another will start)," Gaspan said.Gaspan asked the public to be patient with the checkpoints implemented by the DCPO."Masinati nato ang traffic, tungod aning atong ginahimo karun, pero dili mani pernamente nga ing-ani, sa pagkakaron lang part kini sa atoang strikto nga security measures para maprevent ang kaning panghitabo (We will experience heavy traffic due to this intervention, but this is not permanent, this is part of our strict security measures to ensure we prevent a similar incident)... Mag-adjust sila kay para mani sa atong kaayuhan, kini para sa gitinguha nato nga magpadayon nga malinawon ang atong syudad ug walay mga hulga sa terorista nga makaapekto kanato (They need to adjust because this is for the benefit of everyone, for the peace and order of our city and prevent terrorists from affecting us), even information nga dunay mga (on) bomb threats, whether it is misinformation or false allegation we do not take it lightly, we take it seriously," Gaspan said.

Death by old age

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:19 AM PDT

THE Sperm whale that washed up ashore in the Barangay Sugal Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental died of old age, said D'Bone Collector Museum founder Darrell D. Blatchley."The scratches on the whale were from it banging into the rocks after it [was] stranded. there were no 'wounds' just scratches. Cause of death [was] old age; blood from decomposing and starting to leak out," Blatchley said in an interview with Sun Star Davao.Blatchley said that the death of the sperm whale is a rare case."After 12 years and 75 animals, he joined the only 15 that actually died of Natural Causes. He lived a long life and I will know his age later in the preservation but he washed up dead on Sikalig beach, a peaceful area in Barangay Sugal Jose Abad Santos," Blatchley said.Blatchley said it took them six days to debone the sperm whale that was 60 feet long and between 9.5 to 10.5 feet wide."It took five days of cutting and one day to load the bones. The meat was buried on site. There were five locals that were a big help [in] removing the bones. They help make the work go faster. It was stinky nasty work full of maggots" Blatchley said.Blatchley said several challenges during the deboning of the sperm whale made it hard for them to debone it."It was quite a distance from the road and at the bottom of a cliff. So, a road was made with a backhoe to the beach to access the whale [and] to be able to haul the bones up. Combine that with the fact it is Summer and the sun's heat is a real enemy for the workers so we worked at night. That adds [to] the need for generators and floodlights. Also, the tide was a factor," Blatchley said.Blatchley said they brought the bones of the sperm whale to Davao City to process its preservation."Now the removal of the meat and the oil takes months, if not, nearly a year plus to remove the oil. Then the drying stage and making the framework to stand it on and the building or room it will be displayed in," Blatchley said.Meanwhile, Blatchley said they did not find any ambergris in the sperm whale."None was found, in fact, in 12 years none has ever been found," Blatchley said.

PEF: No PH Eagle nesting sites affected by open-pit mining

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:17 AM PDT

THE Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) said on Monday, May 30, that there are no Philippine Eagle nesting sites directly affected so far by threats of open-pit mining sites in the Davao Region."Right now, none that we know of na direct impact ng open-pit mining sa isang nesting territory," PEF development manager Andi Baldonado said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw press conference at SM City Davao on May 30.His statement comes after the resolution passed by the South Cotabato Provincial Board to lift the ban on open-pit mining in the Municipality of Tampakan, as well as the anticipated re-opening of the mining operations in Barangay Macambol in Mati City, Davao Oriental. The mining operation in Brgy. Macambol is close to the protected area of the Pujada Bay Seascape and Landscape and the forests of Mt. Hamiguitad Range Wildlife Sanctuary.Philippines Eagles are known to inhabit centuries-old forests in different areas of Davao Region, like the Mounts Makabol-Alikoson Conservation Area in Marilog District, Davao City.Baldonado said PEF has long been firm on its stand against open-pit mining due to its proven destructive impacts on the environment when operated hastily. In line with this, the PEF's action is to empower their around 500 forest guards and strengthen the Forest Guarding Program to prioritize the protection of known nesting sites against threats such as mining, illegal logging, and trapping of the Philippine Eagles."We have around 500 already forest guards working closely with us to monitor the different nesting sites. In Davao City alone, we have about 200 continually monitoring yung mga (the) logging activities, trapping or anything that's happening in the forests," Baldonado said."Ang focus namin talaga is to really make sure that itong mga nesting trees are not being cut, doon kami mas focused right now (Our main focus right now is to make sure that nesting trees are not being cut)," Baldonado said.Environmental group Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (Idis) has expressed concern over the mining operations in Tampakan and Brgy. Macambol, saying it poses huge threats to the environment and the said surrounding protected areas. However, the local government unit of Mati City assures that the mining site in Brgy. Macambol will not cause any environmental damage since protective protocols will be put in place.

DepEd-Davao hopeful more schools will open for in-person classes

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:58 AM PDT

THE Department of Education (DepEd) is hopeful more schools, both private and public, will conduct face-to-face (F2F) classes next school year, according to DepEd-Davao spokesperson Jenielito Atillo.During an interview with SunStar Davao, Atillo said there are 1,589 public schools and 31 private schools conducting F2F classes and although they are hopeful it will increase, he said DepEd-Davao cannot push for schools to reopen as it is on their own discretion."We hope everybody will embrace F2F but that is subject to their readiness and compliance to the policies," Atillo said.He added that schools who are willing to open for F2F will comply with the School Safety Assesment Tool and other requirements imposed by DepEd-Davao."Those who are willimg to open for the F2F can go through the prcess that we implemented so that they can open. It doesn't mean na mag abri ta tanan because they are a lot of things we have to consider," Atillo said.Earlier, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said they are pushing for 100 percent implementation of F2F classes nationwide. But Atillo said this will still depend on the capacity and confidence of each school to hold in-person classes.Regionwide, there are 2,200 public schools and 498 private schools. There are still 611 and 467 public and private schools, respectively, that are still implementing an alternative learning set up.With regards to the low number of private schools conducting F2F, Atillo said, "We suffice that patapos na man gud ang atong school year ingana ang situation karon. We expect na come opening of classes for school year 2022 to 2023, daghan na ang private schools nato na mag participate."Schools conducting F2F classes have also done their end-of-school-year rights, including a number of private schools, said Atillo.
