Regan Industrial: Hollow Structural Sections

Posted: 10 Jul 2022 10:26 AM PDT

THERE are hundreds of different kinds of structural steel, used for a variety of purposes. Steel products come in a huge range of shapes and sizes, with specific forms suitable for construction, manufacturing, and architectural design. One of the most popular and diverse structural steel products is the hollow structural section (HSS) — but what are hollow structural sections? In this article, we tackle the purpose, uses, and types of HSS in the Philippine industry. What is a Hollow Structural Section? Hollow structural sections (HSS) are a type of metal profile. They are commonly made from cold-rolled steel and formed into a hollow, tubular section. This profile creates a gaping unfilled edge that extends throughout the whole steel bar, which is what gives them the alternative names of "box section" and "hollow section." The use of HSS has grown substantially because its form, flexibility, and structural strength lends itself well to innovative designs. Purpose of Hollow Structural Sections HSS are some of the most versatile and efficient steel products available for building, fabrication, and mechanical purposes. Usable in Multiple Industries They are highly usable in multiple industries and applications. The most common use of HSS are in welded steel frames and columns. They are also regularly used in steel support beams. This is due to their immense strength. Other common uses for hollow structural steel include Scaffolding; Fencing and guardrails; Platforms and decking; Bridges; Staircases; Gates; Trusses; Hydraulic platforms; Storage facilities and storage solutions; Cranes and other heavy machinery; Furniture and architectural designs. Aesthetic Appeal Hollow structural sections are sometimes the preferred material in buildings with exposed structural supports. This is because their clean lines, flat surfaces, and smooth finish give them aesthetic appeal. They are considered pleasing to the eye and give a simplistic modern look. Types of Hollow Structural Sections Hollow structural sections typically come in three main forms: rectangular hollow sections (RHS), square hollow sections (SHS) and circular hollow sections (CHS). Each type of hollow section has its benefits, properties, and purposes. Rectangular Hollow Sections RHS is also commonly used for building, mechanical, and structural purposes. However, they differ from CHS with their flat surfaces. As a result, RHS may be the more structurally sound and economical choice for some construction applications. RHS can also be used for architectural aesthetics due to its sleek form and clean shape. Square Hollow Sections SHS is considered the middle-man between RHS and CHS in terms of mechanical properties, aesthetics, and structural behavior. They feature a flat surface that requires little to no edge preparation and is ideal for joining and welding. Circular Hollow Sections The circular hollow sections (CHS) were the first type of hollow structural section ever made. CHS is commonly used for building, mechanical, and structural purposes. They have clean and consistent lines, enhanced smoothness, and a lack of sharp or protruding edges. Kadayawan makes a face-to-face comeback

Posted: 10 Jul 2022 09:48 AM PDT

AFTER more than two years of resorting to virtual celebrations because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual Kadayawan Festival of Davao City is set to make a grand face-to-face comeback this August. The 37th Kadayawan sa Davao, with the theme "Kasikas sa Kadayawan" was formally launched on July 8, 2022 at the Seda Abreez Hotel and introduced the different activities Dabawenyos, local and foreign tourists can expect. "The theme of this year's Kadayawan is Kasikas sa Kadayawan, which means to make noise and to have fun. The Kadayawan festival is a means to relax, enjoy, and a way of thanksgiving for our bountiful harvest," said Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. President Dr. Maria Lourdes Monteverde. Headed by the Kadayawan 2022 Executive Committee and the City Government of Davao, the official opening of the Kadayawan Festival will be on August 15 during the Pag-abli sa Kadayawan ceremony at the Bantawan Amphitheater in Magsaysay Park. However, the start of the month-long celebration is signaled by the Kadayawan Tribal Village Opening in Magsaysay Park on August 5 wherein different tribes in Davao City will exhibit their culture, traditional homes, and practices for everyone to see and appreciate. These tribes along with their deputy mayors are namely Bagobo Klata Tribe, Ata Tribe, Obo-Manuvu Tribe, Matigsalug Tribe, Bangsa Sama Tribe, and Bagobo Tagabawa Tribe. Also included are Bangsa Kagan Tribe, Bangsa Iranun Tribe, Bangsa Maguindanaon Tribe, Bangsa Tausog Tribe, and Bangsao Maranao Tribe. The festival will also hold Pitik Kadayawan drum beating competition on August 21, Sayaw Kadayawan indigenous-inspired dance competition on August 18, and Hiyas sa Kadayawan Cultural Presentation on August 6, among others. But some of the most awaited events anticipated by tourists are the colorful Indak Indak sa Kadayawan street dance event at San Pedro Square, which will happen on August 20; the Pamulak sa Kadayawan floral float parade on August 21; and the Hiyas sa Kadayawan Coronation on August 17. It will conclude on August 21 with the Tambayayong sa Kadayawan at the Bantawan Ampitheathre in Magsaysay Park. With this line-up of activities celebrated face-to-face, Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte said the city is excited to celebrate Kadayawan face-to-face again. "With the reopening of borders, we are inviting all of our friends across the globe to witness the festivities prepared by the City Government of Davao for the 37th Kadayawan Festival," Duterte said. At least 50,000 spectators, both foreign and local, are anticipated for this year's F2F celebration, said Kadayawan 2022 Executive Committee Spokesperson Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre during the launch. This is significantly lower compared to the usual number Davao City expects every Kadayawan season, which increased the years before Covid-19 hit the country in March 2020. Around 171,851 tourists were recorded in 2016; 185,660 in 2017; and 208,645 in 2018. In 2019, some 250,000 tourists were expected. "Minimum lang among expectation because again, naa pa ang Covid and atong gina-mention, we are making sure na safe ta, we are following the health protocols para ang atong spectators will come (Our expectations are only at the minimum because Covid is still present, and as we have mentioned, we are making sure the visitors are safe and we are following the health protocols so entice spectators to come)," Alejandre said during an interview with the media. In line with this, City Administrator Atty. Francis Mark Layog said security measures are being planned to ensure the health and security safety of visitors. The Executive Committee is confident the face-to-face celebration will push through. Still, if Covid-19 cases in Davao City continue to rise, organizers said they would follow the recommendations of the government. "Dayon gyud ang Kadayawan, mag-wait lang ta sa (The Kadayawan will push through. We just have to wait for the) alert level system from the national IATF for August. We are optimistic that Kadayawan will continue as planned with all necessary precautions. The City Health Office is also part of our sub-committee," Layog said. Meanwhile, allied tourism sectors such as hotels and accommodations, restaurants and food establishments, and even meetings, incentives, conventions/conferences, and exhibition/event (MICE) venues, are already gearing up for the festival and the influx of visitors. "They would expect sa pag-duol sa atong Kadayawan, more booking sa ilang mga hotels and accommodations and somehow atong Mice pud, medyo naga-pick up na ta (They can expect that when Kadayawan draws near, there will be more bookings in the hotels and accommodations, and even at our Mice venues. It will start to pick up)," spokesperson Alejandre said. In return, the visitors would also help boost the recovery of the said allied tourism sectors. The 37th Kadayawan Festival has a budget of approximately P56.8 million, Alejandre said. P52 million is intended for the Kadayan-proper activities and P3 million for the tribal villages. Former Davao City Tourism Operations Office head Generose Tecson said during a radio interview on June 14 that this year's Kadayawan will be the first major festival in the country to have a face-to-face celebration since the pandemic. First known as the Apo Duwaling Festival in the 1980s, the celebration highlights the bountiful harvest of the people of Davao City and the harmony of all the tribes living within its borders. In 1988, it was officially renamed the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival celebrated annually every August. Through the decades, the Kadayawan "King of Festivals" has become known nationwide and internationally as one of the grandest and liveliest celebrations in the Philippines. ICM

Believing in igniting change in the communities

Posted: 08 Jul 2022 09:38 AM PDT

THERE is a famous quote by Filipino nationalist Dr. Jose Rizal that goes "Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan" or in English, "The youth is the hope of our country" - it is a powerful and inspiring message that ignites change among the Filipino youth today. However, in the age of the internet and social media, it is easy for the youth to become too immersed with their gadgets and being online - resulting in unproductivity due to hours and hours worth of scrolling on Tiktok and Facebook. But youth leader RJ Pandili believes in Dr. Jose Rizal's immortalized quote. He knows that Generation Z is still capable of igniting positive change if given the right opportunities - thus he made it his mission. Through establishing Davao Oriental's homegrown non-government organization called Lumon Community, RJ was able to marry two things - help the marginalized communities through community development and inspire volunteerism among the youth. "If (the youth) do volunteerism, mas na-de-develop ang kanilang personal skills at the same time, mas na-appreciate nila ang pag tulong or mas nakakatulong sila sa communities natin (their personal skills will be developed and at the same time, they will appreciate helping our communities)... I think the youth should be very engaged in nation-building," Rj said. With enough perseverance, RJ raised the Lumon Community to at least 600 members, majority are youth volunteers from Davao Oriental that traversed mountains and rivers to reach the farthest communities and engage with the marginalized. The Lumon Community focuses on community development projects in line with their HALIK advocacy - Health, Agriculture, Livelihood, Indigenous Culture, and Knowledge. Through their outreach programs, the communities were provided with livelihood workshops, school supplies, medical missions, and education campaigns, among others. In turn, Rj's youth volunteers learned a valuable lesson - gratefulness and patriotism. The youth learns to always be grateful even for the little things and to help their country and fellow Filipinos whenever they can. Rj learned this through the testimonies of the volunteers wherein they were moved by the gratefulness of the people they helped, that even their mere presence in their community was enough to spark hope. "Didto makaingon sila (volunteers) na dili lang material things ang pwede nimo matabang, you could also help by bringing hope (It was then when the volunteers realized that material help is not the only thing y ou can give, you can also help by bringing hope)... Fulfilling gyod siya sa part sa volunteer og naga balik-balik gyod sila maski wala'y sweldo kay kabalo sila naa'y purpose ilang pag-adto (It's really fulfilling on the part of the volunteers. They come back to help even though there is no salary because they know their work has purpose)," he said. At the same time, the youth leader believes that volunteersim can be generously rewarded if you put your heart into it - just like how Rj is harvesting his opportunities today after years of hard work as a volunteer and youth leader. Recently, he was a delegate in the Philippine Youth Leadership Program in the United States where he was able to immerse in a four-week, all-expense paid leadership training with other fellow youth leaders. "As early as you are in high school or college, tumutulong ka na, (you're already helping) just continue what you are doing, continue your passion in life. Because eventually, there are some opportunities kapag maganda ang track record mo (if you have a good track record)," he said. Above all, Rj believes that the backbone of volunteerism and helping others should be for the greater glory of God - to spread His blessings and to do good in His name. If this is the center of their motivation to volunteer, there is no better reason to keep going. ICM

Regan Industrial: 3 Different Uses of Sheet Piles

Posted: 07 Jul 2022 11:35 PM PDT

With the rise of the construction of both small and large infrastructures, there's no doubt that the need for construction materials has also risen. Sheet piles are one of them as they are a key player in construction today. The uses of sheet piles vary widely and are incredibly versatile. With that being said, let us take a closer look at some of the most typical circumstances where sheet piles are used in construction. It Serves as a Retaining Wall Due to its ability to resist soil and water pressure, sheet piles (specifically steel sheet piles) are a popular pick for retaining wall construction for both temporary and permanent use. In temporary works, the sheet piles allow for deep excavations to occur to facilitate construction on a water level. On the other hand, for permanent use, steel sheet piles are utilized in retaining walls for structures such as quay walls, underground storage tanks, and car parks. What's more, there is always a sheet piling solution to troubleshoot any retaining wall situation and scenarios. For example, in cantilever, braced, and anchor walls, the strength of the sheets is needed to support it. In soldier piles, h-section pipes need to be inserted into drilled holes. Furthermore, sheet piles retaining are the perfect pick because it holds many incredible advantages such as: Quicker construction compared to reinforced concrete walls; When installed, there is no disturbance to the existing ground; They are visually and aesthetically pleasing; It generates a narrow form of construction, which provides more usable site space; Steel sheet piles are compatible for all soil types; Sheet piles are a sustainable product. They can be extracted easily and they minimize waste; Direct load-carrying capacity. Marine Applications Steel sheet piles are also used in several marine applications. One of the most common uses is its application to ship berthing structures in ports and harbors for mooring vessels. It is also popularly used to block floods from structures close to the shorelines. It is the preferred choice of material because of its qualities of robustness, durability, reliability, and speediness of installation compared to any other prospects. It can also conform to other marine applications such as bulkheads, seawalls, tide walls, breakwaters, groins, and jetties. Basements Over the past few years, steel sheet piles have been the number one pick for basement construction for a number of good reasons. Firstly, steel sheet piles offer minimum construction time and costs. It cuts construction by almost half compared to the normal basement construction process. Secondly, by utilizing steel sheet piles into basement walls, construction space is minimized. This is because the wall is already installed prior to the soil excavation. This also results in a more supported building. Lastly, steel sheet piles are also reusable and recyclable. They can easily be extracted after their use. This is not limited to commercial basements. In a home basement, steel sheet piles can also be of use. Sheet piling can be utilized as permanent walls since they can provide stability and robustness to interior walls.
