| 5G to drive economic growth, job creation in PH Posted: 19 Jul 2022 04:10 AM PDT GLOBE Telecom continues to expand the availability of its 5G technology nationwide as it expects the next generation of wireless internet connectivity to boost Philippine economic growth and recovery, as well as the country's transition towards "Industry 4.0."With its faster speeds, lower latency, higher bandwidth and more reliable internet connectivity, 5G is a must-have platform for the shift to Industry 4.0 or the "4th Industrial Revolution" (4IR).This refers mainly to the availability of new technologies that modernize the way businesses operate and distribute their products. These technologies include the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and many others."We are at a critical stage in the Philippines' economic development, given the new administration's digitalization goals, the ongoing recovery amid the pandemic, and the speed on which technologies and digital lifestyles are evolving," Globe president and Chief Executive Officer Ernest Cu said."Today we are ranked competitively with other countries thanks to newer technologies plus heavy investments to improve our network performance. There are still growth opportunities for the country, especially using 5G technology to be at pace with the rest of the world," he said, adding that "Globe intends to continue making this technology accessible to many in support of the country's digital transformation."A report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) entitled Reaping the Benefits of Industry 4.0 Through Skills Development confirmed that "the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies can not only result in large potential returns to businesses but also create more jobs."It determined further that businesses which are skilled in these technologies are likely to recover faster from the pandemic and become more resilient. The study also estimated that "4IR technologies could result in net job increases of 11 percent for information technology-based business process outsourcing (IT-BPO)."Cu earlier expressed Globe's support for the new administration's plan to increase digitalization in government to streamline processes and make public service delivery more efficient. The company's continued investments in its network infrastructure will help fulfill these shared goals, he said. The expansion and use of new technologies is aligned with Globe's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation in driving economic growth and development. In the first quarter of the year, Globe upgraded over 3,500 mobile sites to 4G/LTE and installed 380 new 5G sites, leading to an increase in ultra fast 5G mobile connectivity in more areas nationwide. As of end-March 2022, Globe logged over two million devices in its 5G network, which now reaches 96 percent of the National Capital Region and 85 percent of key cities in Visayas and Mindanao in terms of 5G outdoor coverage. | Hofileña: Cinco de Noviembre and The Republic of Negros Posted: 19 Jul 2022 04:10 AM PDT AS WE indicated in our past columns, the short-lived Cinco de Noviembre 1898 Negrense Revolution against the spaniards which ended with the Spanish surrender to the Negrense leaders on November 6, is connected with the equally historic formal organization of the First Provincial Assembly to organize the Republic of Negros. The Negrense leaders convened in Bacolod on November 7 for these historic events. Before proceeding on their historic journey, the Negrenses raised the questions of the causes of this historic uprising against Spanish colonial rule. As a brief overview, the sense of oppression and injustice was spreading against the colonial system and was growing more intolerable in Negros as in other Philippine provinces. Added to this was the restiveness due to the entry of foreign ideas through wider educational opportunities and communication facilities. Many of the revolutionary Negrense leaders were schooled in Manila or some even abroad. The more notable names at this time were Jaime Araneta, Juan Araneta, Zoilo Diaz, Emilio Gaston, Carlos Infante, Antonio Jayme, Aniceto Lacson, Roman Lacson, Leandro Locsin, Dionisio Mapa, Agustin Montilla Jr., Rafael Ramos, Melecio Severino, Mariano Yulo and various other notable Negrenses. Most of these Negrenses were also elected among the early officials of the First Negros Provincial Assembly. The Assembly resulted to the election of the following officials of the Provincial Assembly of the Republic of Negros: President - Aniceto Lacson; Delegate of War - Juan Araneta; Delegate of Hacienda - Eusebio Luzuriaga; Delegate of Government - Simon Lizares; Delegate of Development - Nicolas Golez; Delegate of Justice - Antonio Jayme; Delegate of Agriculture and Commerce- Agustin Amenabar; Secretary - Melecio Severino; Sub-Secretary - Fortunato Hugo; and Military Commander - Rafael Ramos. To highlight the reasons for the 1898 Negros uprising, historians have noted that more forceful than the ideas arising from the Ages of Reason and Enlightenment then sweeping across Europe as the ideological bases for the revolution were the frequent violations of human dignity and justice by the Spanish colonizers.Twenty-four Deputies for the 24 municipalities of Negros Occidental were also elected. Specifically, the president and vice president of the Chamber were Jose Luzuriaga and Istanislao Yusay, respectively. The Secretary was Jose Lopez Vito, publisher of a local newspaper in Bacolod. The inauguration took place on Christmas day with a festive atmosphere, a military parade with officials and soldiers in uniform and homes gaily decorated with several orchestras. It is notable that as the writers narrate, history offers valuable lessons for humankind. There are also lessons for Negrenses today on this historic period of our province. Courage, a united people, organized and well planned, and rising above narrow vested interests for a greater cause; and above all, that injustice and oppression sooner or later are overthrown. It is fitting therefore to remember these historic lessons in our own lives today. For a people who do not learn from or forget the lessons from history are liable to repeat these crucial learnings from the past. For inquiries, my email adds: roquejrhofilena@yahoo.com.ph. |
| Posted: 19 Jul 2022 04:08 AM PDT NOW that schools are about to open soon, Vice President and concurrent Education Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio expressed her disapproval of school uniforms.I beg to disagree.Army and police uniforms create confidence and expectations on their functions and discipline. We learn early on to respect our people in uniform.Same thing for officers of the court as lawyers and judges where they follow a dress code when they perform their official functions.Same thing with those in the medical profession. We may not know them as individuals but we honor their uniforms. For soldiers they are expected to salute superior officers.Obviously, these social obligations were ingrained in us early starting when we entered our schools.Should our kids wear a school uniform? One of the many benefits of wearing school uniforms for children is that they create a sense of identity and unity among school students. When children wear a similar uniform daily, they will have a similar identity and they won't compete over who wears expensive or fashionable clothes. Children who cannot afford to wear expensive clothes won't feel insecure if there is a uniform. Not having to decide what to wear on a daily basis in the morning can save a lot of time for children and they can get ready soon. It will save a lot of time and energy. When all the kids are dressed in the same clothes it is difficult to establish their economic background. Uniforms create a sense of equality among kids, which makes them mingle with each other without bothering about their economic and social status. When there are fewer distractions and lesser concerns on the way one looks, a child can spend more time doing schoolwork.Buying school uniforms for kids is more economical than buying an entire wardrobe for the season. Also, the school uniforms are made from stronger and better fabric, which means they can stand repeated washing and everyday wear and tear better than normal clothes. This also means that a few sets of uniforms can be sufficient to sail effectively throughout the entire academic year.Apart from various other reasons, clothes are one of the major reasons for bullying in school. However, wearing the same clothes or uniform helps in ensuring that there is no discrimination on the basis of clothes or how a particular child dress up.Schools that do not have school uniforms for the students have to make dress code policies. This can include various aspects such as deciding on the type or length of the skirt, the kind of shoes or footwear appropriate for school, the kind of shorts or pants that boys should wear in schools, etc. This can be quite tedious.Having a uniform for children can save time as all kids will wear a similar uniform and there will be no need for a dress code policy. When students wear uniforms, it becomes easier for the teachers to find out who is an outsider and who should not be on the school premises. It also discourages gang affiliations in school, which is usually evident by the color of the clothes. When on a field or off-campus trips, it becomes easier for the teacher to keep a tab on the students when they are dressed in their school uniforms. It also reduces the chances of students going missing because anyone going away from the campus can be identified easily by the teacher or even by passersby. They can develop their individuality and independent training by creating new knowledge and challenging orthodoxy not in the clothes they wear. The hippie of yesterday now learn to dress up while pursuing their dissent in suits. |
