The population of brown rats in the District's urban core shrank during the pandemic as restaurants and offices closed, but the rats found a way to survive. Now, as restaurants and offices open for normal operations, the rats are back.
- How bad is it? D.C. ranked fourth in Orkin's top 50 "rattiest cities" in America. There have been more than 13,300 complaints to the city's hotline in the 2022 fiscal year — compared with about 6,200 in 2018.

 | Children with disabilities are out of luck in Northern Virginia schools, their parents say. | - Parents of disabled children say Northern Virginia school systems overwhelmingly denied their requests for enrollment in schools that better accommodated their needs, according to a lawsuit filed last month.
- The issues: These parents allege that the state's education department has "curated" officials who almost always decide cases in its favor. Over 11 years, just three out of 395 petitions in Northern Virginia for placement in a different school prevailed, data show.

- Homecoming: McLaurin was born and raised in Indianapolis, and the star receiver had friends and family in attendance as he caught the critical pass to set up the game-winning touchdown.

 | Bus driver shortages in Montgomery County are driving parents up the wall. | - The problem: There was a spike in frustration last week when parents received last-second alerts about unstaffed routes and late-arriving buses. They're being recruited to use their own cars to drive groups of children to school.
- Amid a nationwide bus driver shortage, Montgomery County had 70 open spots before the school year and 32 as of last week.

 | Prince William County will decide the fate of a controversial proposal for rural land. | - The idea: Putting a data center complex on 2,100 acres of countryside in Gainesville. Some residents want the area to remain untouched by business development.
- The county board will vote tomorrow on the "Digital Gateway" proposal, part of which cuts into the Occoquan watershed, where development has been limited. Officials say the plan would generate an additional $400 million in much-needed yearly tax revenue to use for crowded schools and other problems.

 | An Arlington county board race is really about housing. | - Why? Three candidates are campaigning based on what they'd do about a proposal that would allow denser housing in single-family neighborhoods.
- What they're saying: Incumbent Matt de Ferranti (D) has tried to compromise, saying he would allow "six-plexes" at most — and only on the largest lots. Audrey Clement has run multiple times opposing rapid growth. Adam Theo, a libertarian, wants more housing.
