Catherine Rampell's Opinions columns usually focus on "hard" issues such as economics and immigration. But to know Catherine is to know her love of theater — the artistry in productions, the escapism and social commentary in shows, the community of a shared audience experience. Occasionally, Post readers have gotten to enjoy Catherine's affection for musical theater in particular, such as when she shared her affinity for Debbie Reynolds and "Singin' in the Rain" or the tears of joy she shed when returning to live performances after pandemic lockdowns. Now, Catherine writes about the very first show she saw, at age 4 — the one that sparked her love of musicals: "The Phantom of the Opera," which is soon to end its record-long 35-year run. "It's a cheeseball of a show," she writes — the pyrotechnics, the candelabras, all those sequins. Worse for New Yorkers, it's a show for tourists. And yet: She adores it. Whether or not you are already a "phan" of "Phantom," there is much to enjoy in her love letter to the O.G. of Broadway blockbusters — from her words themselves to the embedded audio that gives a taste of the show's sumptuous score and melodrama. (Matthew Murphy) AUDIO ARTICLE 'Phantom of the Opera' was the first musical I ever saw. It's also the show that made me fall in love with theater.
