Magnificent News: The 7 DMV: One woman’s quest to normalize crying in public

What to know: The Virginia High School League will continue to allow transgender students to participate on teams that match their gender identity despite new statewide guidance released last week.
Since VHSL's transgender appeal process was enacted in 2014, only 25 students have petitioned for a waiver to play on the team that matches their identity. Three have been denied.

Where? Samuels Public Library in Front Royal, about 70 miles west of D.C. Some residents demanded the removal of certain children's books involving LGBTQ+ themes.
The group persuaded Warren County officials in June to withhold 75% of the library's funding until something was done to address hundreds of complaints. The library has only enough money to operate through September.

The Post investigated an August 2019 incident in which five officers wrestled Delgardo Franklin II to the ground. Police jailed him and charged him with assaulting three officers.
Why it matters: Franklin's father, who had called the authorities for help, told them his son was in mental distress. The Post found the officers had defied training and failed to adequately respond to a mental health crisis.

The history: Allan Berger owns the decrepit brick wall near M and 30th streets NW. His father had bought it in order to say he owned property in Georgetown. Some believe it was once part of a hotel.
What are the issues? Records show that the wall has been the subject of at least $1,600 in fines for infractions, which Berger denied. The wall is attached to a home owned by Daniela Walls, who says Berger's property is causing damage.

In recent years, women have joined the 40+ Double Dutch Club in Southeast Washington to jump rope for exercise and in the hope of passing it down to younger generations.
The game: Double Dutch is played mostly by girls and involves turning the ropes for one or more jumpers. It was a mainstay of 20th-century urban African American communities.

Who? Kiara McGowan lost her dream job as a creative director in a Senate office in October. Her prolific sobbing inspired her to launch @cryingindc on TikTok.
Her crusade: McGowan visits attractions across the city and reviews her experiences crying there. She said she hopes the TikTok account normalizes crying in public.

What are they? Hammerhead worms contain a debilitating neurotoxin and can grow more than 22 inches long. The invasive species can break apart and regenerate into multiple worms.
How to stop them: The worm can be immobilized with salt, picked up with a stick or gloves, then placed in a bag for freezing and disposal. It isn't a threat to humans unless ingested or handled.
